Freezing at a mountain onsen ryokan in Japan? How to stay warm tonight
Cold room, icy corridor or a snowy walk to the outdoor bath? What to ask the front desk for, which inns in our directory run cold and which lend coats, boots or blankets, buying kairo heat packs and warm innerwear at a konbini today, avoiding low-temperature burns, the official advice on bathing in cold weather, ordering warm gear to your ryokan, and winter tyres, chains and shuttles.
Actualizado el 18 oct 2026
Old wooden inns in Japan's mountains can be cold from autumn onwards. Japan's national tourism organisation (JNTO) itself notes that Japanese buildings are often not well insulated and central heating is rare, and our reports on mountain and snow-country ryokan keep returning to the same things: chilly corridors, draughty windows, heaters that struggle, cold changing rooms and a walk through the snow to the outdoor bath. Most of it can be fixed tonight: ask the front desk, buy heat packs (kairo) and a warm layer at a convenience store (konbini), and use the bath sensibly.
If you can wait a day or two, Amazon.co.jp and Rakuten can deliver warmer clothes to your inn or to a konbini near it; for how that works, see our guide to delivery to your ryokan. Below: what to ask for at the inn, which inns in our directory run cold (and which lend coats, boots or blankets), what konbini sell, how to avoid low-temperature burns from heat packs, the Consumer Affairs Agency's advice on bathing in the cold, ordering online, and the official rules on winter tyres and chains if you're driving.
Cold tonight? Start with the front desk

The quickest fix is usually a call to the front desk. Ask whether the heater can be turned up or checked, and whether they can bring an extra blanket or futon, or a padded jacket to wear over your yukata. JNTO notes that in onsen towns a warm cotton haori jacket is worn over the yukata in the colder months; if there isn't one in your room, ask. Don't struggle with the controls on your own: reviewers at Takayama's Hoshokaku couldn't adjust the central heating in October 2026, and a December 2025 guest at Takayama's Kachoan found the room cold and the remote unresponsive.
Some inns lend winter gear. Reviewers of Notoya at Ginzan Onsen mention red coats lent for winter walks; at Zao's Kinosato, where reaching the hot-spring bath means walking outside between buildings, boots and blankets are lent in winter; and Shosenkaku Kagetsu at Echigo-Yuzawa lent a family snow boots before check-in in 2024.
Expect some extras to cost money. Tsurunoyu in Nyuto adds a winter heating fee of about ¥1,100–1,320 per room roughly from October to May, and a March 2026 guest at Hatcho no Yu in Okukinu found a separate heating charge that wasn't shown at booking. Where inns list an extra futon, it is priced: ¥1,100 at Kinugawa Onsen Hotel Manyotei and ¥3,500 plus tax at Kagetsu in 2024, both quoted for children's bedding.

Which inns run cold, and which stay warm: what our reports say

Cold corridors are the most common winter complaint about old wooden ryokan. Our reports mention them at Kinosaki's Mikiya, Sekizenkan in Shima Onsen, Okutsuso in Okayama, Kamenoi Bessou in Yufuin (with old gas heaters), Kinugawa Onsen Hotel Manyotei, Hakone's Mikawaya (still chilly in January 2026 after its renovation), Atami's Taikanso (long, chilly walks to dinner), and Yumoto Choza in Okuhida, where rooms are far apart — tell the inn if anyone in your group has trouble walking.
Draughts and weak heaters are the other pattern. Gero's Yunoshimakan has original window frames that let in draughts in midwinter, Hakone's Fukuzumiro is described as draughty and cold in winter, and at Yamashiro's Yuzankaku reviewers mention draughts and weak heating, with baths frozen in February 2026. At Okukinu's Kaniyu a kerosene fan heater never fully warmed one March guest's room, and in November 2025 another guest's heater didn't warm the room even on full power; a March 2026 guest found a Hatcho no Yu cabin ice-cold on arrival; and at HATAGO Isen in Yuzawa reviewers found the heating off at check-in or cut off mid-morning. Some rural inns heat rooms with kerosene heaters: Naruko's Kanshichiyu does in winter, and guests at Aoni Onsen mention the fumes and suggest opening a window.
If warmth matters more than atmosphere, look for a kotatsu (a low table with a heater and quilt) or floor heating. Our report on Nozawa Onsen's Sumiyoshiya says rooms in its wooden main building get a kotatsu and a humidifier in winter, and kotatsu also feature in Shirahone's Awanoyu (its most common room type), Room 18 at Hoshi Onsen Chojukan and the renovated rooms at Nyuto's Taenoyu. Hoshinoya Karuizawa is described as warm even in sub-zero January thanks to floor heating, all 31 rooms at Itamuro Daikokuya near Nasu have floor heating, Tsuta Onsen's 2022 rooms have it too (the inn closes for winter), and each room at Nyuto's Magoroku has its own heating.

Buy warmth today: kairo heat packs and warm layers at a konbini
Disposable heat packs (kairo) are the fastest buy. JNTO says they are sold in convenience stores everywhere: take one out of its packet, give it a shake and it starts to warm, and there are versions for your hands and for your boots. Some stick on to clothing (貼る, haru) and some go loose in a pocket (貼らない, haranai). Kobayashi Pharmaceutical, which makes Kiribai kairo, says not to knead them — a few shakes is enough, and kneading can clog the air holes or push the contents to one side — and notes that because they contain water, they may not heat if they freeze below zero, so keep spares indoors.
For layers, JNTO says thermal clothing is popular in Japan and that underlayers are well worth the small cost on arrival, along with gloves and a warm hat. Some konbini sell them: FamilyMart's own Convenience Wear range includes heat-generating innerwear (REHEAT) and thick socks, on sale at about 16,400 stores nationwide according to the chain's November 2025 release, with short-sleeved REHEAT tops listed at ¥1,290 including tax. FamilyMart adds that not every store stocks every item, so try another store if the first doesn't have what you need.
Mountain inns can be a long way from a shop, so buy before you leave town. Yachi Onsen in the Hakkoda mountains is about 35 minutes by car from the nearest convenience store, Yumoto Choza in Okuhida about 30 minutes, Yunishigawa has none in the village, and there's none near Yuwaku's Hyakurakuso.

Heat packs and low-temperature burns: the rules on the packet
Kairo feel gentle, but they can burn. Japan's product-safety agency NITE warned in January 2025 that people have suffered low-temperature burns from heat packs kept on the same spot, such as the feet, for a long time. Its points: don't put a heat pack directly on your skin, and stick to any body part or purpose the packet specifies; don't use one while sleeping; don't keep it on the same spot for long; don't use it in a way that presses on blood flow; and don't use it inside a kotatsu or near a heater.
Kobayashi explains why: a low-temperature burn happens when something warmer than body temperature touches the skin for a long time, and it can damage deep layers of skin even when the surface doesn't look bad; pressing a heat pack against the body slows the blood flow that carries heat away, which makes a burn more likely. It also says not to use them inside bedding, that people with diabetes or other conditions affecting heat sensation or circulation should not use them, and that someone should keep watch when the user can't respond for themselves, such as small children. If burn symptoms appear, stop using it and consult a doctor.
One rule matters at a ryokan in particular. Kobayashi's stick-on warmers for socks are for use inside shoes only: the packet says not to use them in slippers, sandals or loose shoes, where more air gets in and they can get too hot. So don't wear a toe warmer with the inn's slippers or under the futon at night; put on thick socks instead.

Outdoor baths in the snow: bathing safely in the cold

A hot bath is the obvious way to warm up, but Japan's Consumer Affairs Agency warns that bathing accidents peak in the cold months. In a December 2024 column it said 6,541 people aged 65 or over died in bathtubs in 2023 — about eight in ten of that age group's drowning deaths — with deaths highest in December and January. It links winter cases to sudden changes in blood pressure caused by the gap between warm rooms and cold changing rooms or bathrooms, and to loss of consciousness as body temperature rises during long soaks in hot water.
Its advice, written for older people and those around them: warm the changing room and bathroom first; drink water before bathing; avoid bathing straight after a meal, after drinking alcohol or after taking medicine; keep the water at 41°C or below and soak for no more than about 10 minutes; don't stand up suddenly from the bath; and tell someone before you go. At a ryokan, that means not heading to the bath straight after a kaiseki dinner with sake, and letting your companions know where you've gone.
Our reports show where the cold bites. Changing rooms or washing areas are cold in winter at Tsurunoyu and Taenoyu in Nyuto, in the fourth-floor changing rooms at Naruko's Onuma and at Kusatsu's Boun, and a January guest at Noboribetsu's Boro Noguchi found the changing room cold. At Takaragawa Osenkaku walking between the river baths in a wet robe is cold in winter, and some pools run cool (one posted 26°C in December); Shirahone's Awanoyu is 37–38°C, lovely in summer but chilly in winter; and Aoni Onsen's open-air bath is cold in winter. Take something warm to wear for the walk back to your room.

Order warm gear to your ryokan, and allow for snow
If you can wait, order online. Amazon.co.jp's next-day delivery arrives roughly between 7:00 and 22:30, but Amazon says actual times depend on the item and the delivery location, that delays can occur because of weather or traffic, and that some places such as remote islands aren't covered by its expedited shipping. With Amazon Pickup you can collect at a Lawson, FamilyMart or MiniStop counter within 4 days of delivery, at an Amazon Locker, FamiLocker or Yamato PUDO locker within 3 days, or at an Amazon Counter or Yamato Transport centre within 7 days.
Rakuten Ichiba also offers konbini pickup, depending on the shop; it isn't available for parcels over 100 cm or 10 kg or for date- or time-specified delivery, and the pickup window is two to three days from arrival, depending on the store and carrier. To have a parcel sent to the inn itself, ask the ryokan first whether it will accept and hold it, and allow extra days for a remote mountain inn; our guide to delivery to your ryokan explains how it works.
Next time, pack for the inn as well as the city. JNTO's advice for snowy regions is to dress in layers you can adjust as you move in and out of buildings, with gloves, a hat and a scarf, sturdy padded boots for walking on snow, and heat packs from any convenience store if you're still cold. It also notes that many Japanese gloves work with touchscreens, which helps with maps on a cold night.

Getting there in snow: winter tyres, chains and shuttles

If you're driving to a mountain onsen, the rules are strict. Prefectural road traffic rules everywhere except Okinawa require anti-skid measures such as winter tyres on snowy or icy roads, and the Shikoku bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) notes that fines can apply (¥6,000 for an ordinary car). In exceptional snowfall MLIT can also impose chain regulations on designated passes and expressway sections, such as the Gassan road in Yamagata: then even cars on studless winter tyres, 4WD vehicles included, may not pass without chains on the drive wheels. Chains sold at car-supply shops are fine; spray-on products don't count.
Inns spell out their own winter conditions. Shirahone's Awanoyu warns that two-wheel drive on studless tyres alone is dangerous and says to carry chains; Hoshi Onsen Chojukan gets about a metre of snow and asks drivers to carry chains or other anti-skid equipment; Tsuta Onsen asks for winter tyres from October; Kusatsu's Kanemidori says snow tyres or chains are needed from November to April at 1,200 m; Yunishigawa needs winter tyres from about December to early March; and in Okukinu roughly from November to late April you need snow chains to reach the Meotobuchi car park, where Hatcho no Yu's shuttle starts.
Without a car, shuttles do much of the work. From December to March you can park at Michi-no-eki Minakami and ride Takaragawa Osenkaku's free shuttle; at Ginzan Onsen the road closes to general traffic in the evenings and early mornings from December to March, but guests with an inn booking are exempt; and at Nyuto's Magoroku, staff carry bags in winter from the parking opposite Ogama Onsen, about 800 m along a snowy road, so wear boots. Some roads close completely for winter, such as the Zao Echo Line (November to the end of April) and the Hakkoda road from Sukayu (late November to April), so check your route before you set off.
