Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

Nyuto's gentler, more polished alternative — two different springs, a riverside mixed bath with women-only time, and warm service, though the rooms are small and the layout confusing

Taenoyu opened in 1952 and has become the Nyuto inn people recommend to first-timers, especially women: it's more refined than its famously rustic neighbours, with local cooking, POLA amenities and staff that reviewers praise above all (4.77 for service across 30 reviews on one leading site, where it averages 4.63). Two springs feed eight tubs: the rust-tinged, acidic 'gold' water and a clear 'silver' simple spring. The riverside mixed bath beneath an artificial waterfall has a women-only hour for overnight guests and allows towel-wrapping, and there's a free private bath — though slots are only 30 minutes and fill quickly. Dinner is a choice of kiritanpo hotpot or Akita beef shabu-shabu with endless mushroom soup. The criticisms are consistent: rooms are small (futons only), the bathing zones swap and are confusing to navigate, the private-bath route passes the men's side, washing areas are cold in winter, and some baths are roofed and walled rather than truly open. A 2026 reviewer found it 'shabbier than expected', and others noticed dinners identical to its sister inns'. Day visitors crowd the baths from mid-morning. Book direct — it isn't on Agoda, and the cheapest plans on one Japanese site were about ¥51,000 for two with two meals.

Guía para elegir habitación

Recomendadas

  • Momiji-kan (紅葉館) river-side rooms and special rooms

Renovated in 2021, with river views, a kotatsu, washlet toilet and drip coffee; the special rooms are about 16 tatami. A solo guest who stayed two nights in a river-view room in 2022 called both the rooms and the food superb.

  • Sakura-kan (桜館) corner rooms

A family of three paid ¥68,400 with two meals for Yukiyanagi, a 12-tatami corner room, on a pre-holiday night in 2022. Every room has a toilet, safe and fridge, and there's Wi-Fi throughout.

Mejor evitar

  • The cheapest Sakura-kan rooms (e.g. Nirinso)

A 2024 solo guest noted Nirinso is the cheapest room and the only one not renovated recently, with no bath of its own. Reviewers also found rooms small, the toilet fiddly, and futons (there are no beds except the twin room) hard for older guests; stairs are steep, but two ground-floor rooms avoid them.

A Japanese breakfast in the Soan dining room, with local dishes

Reserve the free private bath Yawaragi-no-yu the moment you check in — slots are 30 minutes and go fast. The riverside mixed bath has a women-only hour for staying guests (reports say 17:00–18:00; one 2022 report says 16:00–17:00), and overnight guests can buy the ¥2,500 Yumeguri-cho pass for Nyuto's other baths.

Claves de la cena

4.3/5

A choice of kiritanpo hotpot or Akita beef shabu-shabu (shabu-shabu if you don't choose), with refillable mushroom soup; vegetarian meals are available with notice (three days for allergies). A 2022 guest praised the pacing, and a welcome bowl of pork miso soup greets arrivals. Criticisms: the same dessert two nights running despite a different one on the menu, dinners 'exactly the same' as at the sister inns, a noisy group in the dining room, and a 2026 guest who found quality and quantity lacking.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

Two springs: 'gold' (kin-no-yu), an acidic magnesium-calcium sulphate spring with iron (a blogger read pH 2.9 on the analysis sheet), usually cloudy and able to stain white towels; and 'silver' (gin-no-yu), a clear, neutral simple spring. Reviewers report the gold water is cooled with water and the silver heated.

Privacidad y ambiente

Indoor and outdoor baths in several zones that alternate between men and women (around 20:00, most reports say). The riverside mixed bath, Myoken-no-yu, has a women-only hour for guests and allows towels, but the water is see-through, the route to the private bath passes the men's side, and day visitors describe the mixed bath as effectively a men's bath. Some tubs are roofed and walled, Myoken-no-yu is barely lit at night, washing areas are cold in winter, and one outdoor bath closes in winter.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Not on Agoda: book through the inn's own website (bookings open six months ahead; groups of four or more are asked to book two rooms).

  2. 02

Getting there: bus from JR Tazawako Station to 'Taenoyu Onsen-mae' (about 50 minutes, ¥820); there's no station pickup, and a taxi costs about ¥7,000. Check-in 15:00, check-out 10:00. Parking for 17 cars.

  3. 03

Day visitors bathe 10:30–15:00 (last entry 14:00, closed Tuesdays), and the changing rooms can be crowded — enjoy the baths early morning or evening.

  4. 04

In winter the Nyuto bath-hopping bus doesn't run to Kuroyu or Magoroku.

  5. 05

Recent small complaints: Wi-Fi not working, a strong room air freshener, too few bath towels in a small changing room, and a low-set door lock.
