Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

A budget, near-all-inclusive onsen hotel on the Kinugawa gorge — free afternoon beer and oden, a crab-and-hotpot half-buffet with drinks, and a free private bath — but the building is old, the spring is diluted and recirculated, and 2026 guests report lukewarm baths, mould and thin buffets

Manyotei is an older 72-room onsen hotel on the Kinugawa gorge, now run by the budget BBH Hotel Group (about 160 properties), which revived it in its trademark near-all-inclusive style. Almost every room is a 10-tatami Japanese room with a unit bath, guests lay out their own futons, and dinner is eaten on tatami in a banquet hall — so in substance it's a big, casual Japanese onsen inn rather than a traditional ryokan. Bloggers who stayed in 2022 and 2023, and dozens of 2025–2026 reviewers, come for the extras included in the price: draft beer, highballs, sparkling wine and oden in the lobby from 15:00 to 17:00, free late-night soba, coffee, manga, massage chairs, karaoke and table tennis, a free private bath, and a dinner of Nasu pork soy-milk hotpot with a half-buffet (red snow crab on most plans) and 90 minutes of drinks. Japanese guests rate it 4.0 across 728 reviews on one major site (service 4.2, rooms 3.6, cleanliness 3.7) and 3.84 across 661 on another (facilities and cleanliness both 3.51); most of the recent evidence comes from these booking-site reviews. The complaints are consistent: an ageing building with mould around sinks, cold corridors and broken fridges (January–February 2026), lukewarm baths (July 2026), a buffet with no sashimi that ran out early, and a one-hour dinner slot. In August 2026 the hotel posted a notice that the main open-air bath had been running on heated tap water after an equipment fault, until a new spring supply was secured. Two-meal plans run about ¥9,000–16,000 per person.

Recomendadas

  • Standard 10-tatami Japanese room, river side (main building or Mingeikan wing)

65 of the 72 rooms are this type, for 1–4 people, with a unit bath and toilet; booking sites sell them as facing the gorge. A December 2022 traveller on a two-night senior plan had a view over the whole valley, and a 2023 blogger found the room dated but neat and not cramped. A November 2025 family was upgraded to a corner room with a sitting area and separate bath and toilet. A ninth-floor room in December 2025 had a good view but the river was too far below to hear.

  • 12-tatami room or the 14-tatami special room, for families and groups

Six 12-tatami rooms in the main building sleep 5–6, and the single 14-tatami special room on the seventh floor of the Mingeikan wing sleeps 6–7 and is the only type listed with a separate bath and toilet. Preschoolers on child plans share bedding; an extra futon costs ¥1,100.

Mejor evitar

  • Anyone expecting a modern or spotless room

Rooms score 3.6 and cleanliness 3.7 on one site, and 3.51 on another. 2026 reviewers mention mould on sinks and drains, a broken fridge, rooms that were cold on arrival in winter, no window-side sitting area, a loud toilet and a musty smell; corridors are cold and there are many stairs and level changes. Futons are self-service, and lights in public areas are dimmed centrally after 23:00.

Consenso sobre el desayuno

3.8/5

A Japanese-Western buffet of about 30 dishes (7:00–9:00, last entry 8:45) with a build-your-own seafood bowl and soft drinks — generally liked, with salmon roe on some days only

Check in at 15:00 sharp: the free afternoon drinks and oden run 15:00–17:00, and the free private bath is first-come at the front desk after check-in (no advance booking), so it fills up — one guest arriving at 16:30 found it full. Payment is taken on arrival (cash or card, no QR or e-money).

Claves de la cena

3.6/5

Served 18:00–20:30 (last entry 19:30) in the tatami hall Kikusui: a Nasu sangen-ton pork soy-milk hotpot (sukiyaki on some nights) plus a half-buffet of about 30 Japanese and Western dishes and 90 minutes of beer, sake, shōchū, wine and whisky. Most plans add all-you-can-eat red snow crab; reviewers in 2025–2026 also found eel, sushi and red-shrimp sashimi on some dates and liked the ice cream. Critics between January and March 2026 found few dishes, no sashimi, items not replenished and watery or still-frozen crab, and a May 2026 guest felt rushed by a one-hour time slot. Fair for the price, most agree — not a kaiseki dinner.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

A simple hot spring (weakly alkaline, pH 8.1, 28.3°C at source) per the hotel's posted analysis, which states that water is added, the spring is heated in a recirculating system and chlorinated — not free-flowing, despite booking-site claims of '100% source' strong-alkaline water. According to a hotel notice updated in late August 2026, the main open-air bath had used heated tap water after an equipment fault; the hotel says a new spring supply is now in place.

Privacidad y ambiente

Two large baths in separate buildings, swapping between men and women: Manyō-no-yu in the main building (big windows, a wooden open-air bath over the river, and a sauna) and Ōedo-no-yu in the Mingeikan wing (a rock open-air bath right above the stream), both 15:00–24:00 and 5:00–9:00. The free indoor private bath (40 minutes; 15:00–24:00, 6:00–9:00) is reserved at the front desk after check-in. Guests praise the smooth, slightly sulphurous water and the river views, but in 2026 several found the baths lukewarm or uneven in temperature, the open-air tubs small, the walk to the baths long and confusing, and only one hairdryer in the main-building bath.

Política sobre tatuajes

Tattoos are not allowed in the large baths unless fully covered by one cover sticker of up to 8 × 10 cm, which guests must bring themselves (official site). The free private bath is an alternative — confirm with the hotel.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Check-in 15:00–21:00 (arrivals after 21:00 are treated as cancellations), check-out 10:00. No shuttle: walk about 6 minutes from Tōbu World Square Station, or take a 5-minute taxi from Kinugawa-Onsen Station. Free parking for about 100 cars.

  2. 02

This is a budget chain hotel with Japanese rooms, not a traditional ryokan: self-service futons and yukata, payment on arrival, a busy family atmosphere, staff widely praised as friendly and a smoking area next to the manga corner that one 2026 family found too smoky.

  3. 03

Onsen tax ¥150 per person is extra. Children are welcome, with kids' plans, a kids' corner, trampoline and games; boys and girls aged 7 or over (or taller than 120 cm) must use the bath for their own sex.

  4. 04

The two baths are in different buildings and swap by time, which confused some guests; check the schedule at check-in.

  5. 05

Dinner and breakfast may be split into time slots when busy, and the last dinner entry is 19:30; a May 2026 guest felt rushed by a one-hour dinner slot, and a February 2026 guest on the second sitting found dishes already running out.
