Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

A warm, family-run 28-room inn five minutes from the Shinkansen, loved for its service, free lounge drinks and Uonuma rice — but only the five top-floor rooms have their own free-flowing bath, and 2026 reviewers keep calling dinner thin

Shosenkaku Kagetsu greets every guest with 'okaeri' — welcome home — and the whole inn is built on that idea: matcha and sweets at check-in, a kotatsu lounge with free coffee, herbal tea, sake, sparkling wine and snacks at set times, hand-drawn menus and maps, and an okami and team that reviewers praise above all else. It's a 28-room house five minutes' walk from Echigo-Yuzawa Station, and Trip.com named it one of the world's 100 best ski hotels. Only one first-hand blog with a recent stay turned up (a family in March 2024), so most recent evidence comes from booking-site reviews. Japanese guests rate it 4.3 across 517 reviews on one major site, with service at 4.8 but dinner at only 3.9, 4.58 across 440 on another and 4.57 across 73 on a third. The five fifth-floor rooms each have an open-air bath of free-flowing Yuzawa spring water; everyone else uses two smallish shared baths that swap at midnight and, by the inn's own account, run partly through a filter — one September 2026 guest found the disinfectant smell strong. Breakfast, with Minamiuonuma Koshihikari rice and egg-on-rice you whip yourself, draws near-universal praise. Dinner is the weak point: from May to October 2026 several guests called the kaiseki short on dishes and lacking a main course, one found the beef too tough to chew, and a long-time repeat guest said quality had fallen two years running. Others mention dust, futons already laid at check-in, shared slippers and thin walls. Two-meal stays run about ¥19,000–28,000 per person in a standard room, over ¥30,000 with a private bath.

Guía para elegir habitación

Recomendadas

  • The five fifth-floor 'Machi-zuki' (待ち月) rooms with a free-flowing open-air bath — Tachimachi and Imachi (94㎡), Nemachi (63㎡), Fushimachi (57㎡) and Sarumachi (47㎡)

Each is a one-off Japanese-Western room named for a phase of the waning moon; Fushimachi adds a slope, its own dining area and a wide hinoki bath, Sarumachi a ceramic tub and tatami beds. An October 2026 guest in Imachi found the bath hot enough to sweat in after ten minutes and liked the folding screen that closes it off for washing in cold weather; staff told that guest the in-room water is better than the shared baths. A May 2026 guest could watch the Shinkansen from the tub. A family in Sarumachi in March 2024 booked six months ahead for ski season.

  • Modern Japanese rooms (renovated 2019)

Simple, stylish rooms for one to five people from about ¥20,000 per person on the official site. Reviewers from late 2025 to 2026 praised the solid wooden floors, cleanliness and room for families with small children; one December 2025 guest noted a couple's room didn't quite match the photos.

Mejor evitar

  • Standard Japanese rooms, and some top-floor quirks

The cheapest rooms (up to nine guests) are 'ordinary' to a solo September 2026 guest; in May 2026 one reviewer found seeds scattered over the tatami and futons for three already laid at 14:00. A May 2026 guest in Nemachi heard the neighbours' bath and voices late into the night through thin walls. Sarumachi has no separate changing area, and the 2024 family noted a sometimes-weak shower and a little black mould on the bath ceiling.

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.4/5

A Japanese 'health breakfast' with Minamiuonuma Koshihikari, small dishes such as saikyo-yaki fish and noppe soup, amazake or a smoothie, and tamago-kake-gohan made by whipping the egg white yourself — the most consistently praised meal

Arrive early: luggage is held and in 2024 a family was lent a changing room and snow boots before check-in. The inn runs a shuttle from the station on request. The lounge's free drinks and snacks run at set times; the sake bar opens 20:00–23:00 last order. Ask for a room on the fifth floor if you want any privacy in the bath.

Claves de la cena

3.8/5

A creative kaiseki of Echigo and Uonuma produce, changed every three months, served in a private room at the Fūga restaurant or the Matsukaze dining room (you can't choose which); the 'Machi-zuki' menu is the upgrade, and grilled nodoguro costs ¥8,500 extra. In 2024 a family in a fifth-floor room ate in the room. The rice is the star, and some find the food the best in Yuzawa (late 2025), but 2026 reviews repeatedly ask for one more dish or a real main course, call the beef tough, and a September 2026 repeat guest on the upgraded menu rated it 1 out of 5.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

Echigo-Yuzawa Onsen simple spring (59.2°C at source). The inn says its water is basically 100% free-flowing, but the shared baths also run through a filter; the private bath and the fifth-floor room baths are 100% free-flowing.

Privacidad y ambiente

Two shared baths, the garden bath Iroha-no-yu with a big rock tub and the hinoki Hoheto-no-yu, each with an indoor bath and outdoor tubs including a lukewarm one, swap at midnight. Guests describe them as small but rarely crowded; walls block most views, and one 2026 guest found the disinfectant smell strong. The private bath Danran (indoor and outdoor, free-flowing) costs ¥2,000 plus tax for 45 minutes, starting 14:00–23:00 by reservation. The dry sauna is closed.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Check-in is currently 14:00 and check-out 11:00; from December 2026 check-in moves to 15:00, except for the five fifth-floor rooms with open-air baths, which stay at 14:00.

  2. 02

Only five of the 28 rooms have their own bath; the private family bath costs extra and must be booked by 23:00.

  3. 03

Ski season fills fast — the 2024 family booked six months ahead. Pamphlets and in-house signs are in English.

  4. 04

Children are welcome, with a kids' room, koi feeding and children's slippers and amenities; in 2024 a child's meal cost ¥5,000 plus tax and an extra futon ¥3,500 plus tax, and baby food could be brought in.

  5. 05

Recent reviews mention futons laid before arrival, shared slippers at the baths, dust in rooms, cleaning noise from 9:00 and, on one booking site's early-bird plan in August 2026, no free drinks in the fridge — check what your plan includes.
