Atami Taikanso

A 1940s steel magnate's villa named by the painter Yokoyama Taikan, with a big landscaped garden, a sea-view bathhouse and much-praised Kyoto-style kaiseki — but it's a rambling, older complex where people get lost, and only one of the three bathhouses is truly special
Taikanso started as the Atami villa of Nakayama Etsuji, founder of Nakayama Steel, built in 1940 and opened as an inn on 23 July 1948 with just six rooms. The painter Yokoyama Taikan often stayed and is said to have approved the name because the view was 'grand' (taikan); the room he used, Taikan-no-ma, is still let to guests. The garden was redesigned by the landscape scholar Tatsui Matsunosuke to borrow the view of Hatsushima and Ōshima, and the original sukiya rooms were built by the carpenter Hirata Masaya. Most of today's evidence comes from booking reviews rather than blogs: Japanese guests rate it 4.58 across 544 reviews on one major site (dinner 4.84, breakfast 4.81) and 4.9 across 596 on another, and four short 2026 blog posts agree. They praise the food above all — about ten courses of Kyoto-style kaiseki with abalone and Shizuoka kuroge wagyu, served in private or semi-private dining rooms — plus a welcome drink overlooking the garden, staff who bow to you in every corridor, extra care for older guests and birthdays, and the Sannō bath, whose water seems to run straight into Sagami Bay. The recurring complaints: the building is old and extended so many times that guests describe it as a maze, with long, chilly walks to dinner in winter; the other two bathhouses don't match Sannō; and two 2026 guests rated their rooms 2 out of 5 and marked down cleanliness. It also hosts company banquets. Two-meal plans run from about ¥60,000 for two, and more for top-floor rooms.

Top-floor (5th) Deluxe Japanese-Western rooms, or the Minami Bekkan (South Annex) 12.5-mat rooms
The deluxe rooms combine a 10-mat tatami room with a twin bedroom, a wooden deck and a 'half-open-air' onsen bath whose window opens onto the sea; a March 2026 guest sat on the terrace with a drink and soaked with the window fully open. The South Annex rooms have a big-windowed onsen bath with a view (the window doesn't open), and February 2026 and April 2025 guests loved the view from the room and its bath. Note there are no rooms with a true open-air bath.
Special rooms (main room plus anteroom) on the top floor, or the 60 m² Luxury Twin
The special rooms are the inn's historic sukiya-style suites, all with sea views, and good for families. The Luxury Twin is a non-smoking Japanese-modern room with Simmons beds, a garden view and its own onsen bath; a July 2026 guest called it 'spacious and clean'.

Standard 8–12-mat rooms and the four Western rooms
Standard rooms face either the sea or the garden — ask for a sea view. A July 2026 guest in a standard room rated it 2 out of 5 and cleanliness 3, and an April 2026 guest called the building 'very old-fashioned' though clean. The Western rooms' baths are not onsen. Most rooms allow smoking (only some, like the Luxury Twin, are non-smoking); the inn offers ozone deodorising if you ask at least three days ahead. If walking is hard, ask for a room near the dining area — a May 2025 guest's mother struggled with the long walk.

La cocina a fondo
Consenso sobre el desayuno
4.6/5A generous Japanese breakfast from 7:30 in the dining rooms — two guests single out the grilled horse mackerel (aji), soft and flavourful — rated 4.81 on one site and 4.8 on another
Take the free shuttle: it leaves Atami Station every 30 minutes from 13:45 to 16:45 (nothing later), and runs back from 8:20 to 11:00 — one December 2025 guest was dropped at the MOA Museum of Art. The welcome drink is served in a lounge looking over the garden to the sea, and the inn has a bar (LINK/3) open until 23:00.
Claves de la cena
4.8/5About ten courses of Kyoto-style kaiseki with Kyoto vegetables and dashi-forward seasoning adapted to Kanto tastes. The standard plan features abalone, seasonal fish and Shizuoka kuroge wagyu; an upgrade adds spiny lobster, and the 'Yūmi' plan serves smaller portions of better ingredients, which older guests in 2026 found 'just right'. Dinner is served in the semi-private Suehiro room, private rooms or a partitioned hall, never in your room, from 18:00 (last start 19:00). Guests from 2024 to 2026 praise the food almost without exception: abalone carved in front of them, 'the best abalone ever', gentle seasoning, and thoughtful touches like Edo kiriko glasses, folded-paper decorations and birthday chopsticks. Portions are large on the standard plan. Vegetarian meals are generally not possible. A teppanyaki restaurant, Shōkaan, is on site (closed Wednesdays).
Onsen y bienestar: la realidad
Calcium-sodium chloride spring from two sources on the property, about 80°C when pumped. The inn says it cools the water to bathing temperature and adds water, and may sometimes add water or heat to keep the temperature steady; it doesn't say whether the baths are recirculated or chlorinated. Clear and slightly salty to the taste, according to one blogger.
Three bathhouses, each with an open-air bath, swap between men and women: Sannō-no-yu (the best view, a tiled 'infinity'-style edge onto Sagami Bay, sunrise over the sea, jet bath, sauna and cold plunge), Taki-no-yu (granite bath and an open-air bath by an artificial waterfall) and Hinoki-no-yu (all-cypress tubs facing the garden). Hours are 14:00–0:00 and 4:00–10:00. Guests love Sannō — one said they could stay in it 'forever' — but a May 2026 and a March 2025 guest wished the other two were as good. From April 2027 Hinoki-no-yu will close on Mondays except on busy days. Two private open-air baths overlook the sea: 45 minutes for ¥2,200 (¥5,500 on fireworks nights), booked at check-in or in advance (until 17:00 on the day). There's also a covered foot bath with a view of the sea and Atami Castle. All Japanese-style, Japanese-Western and Luxury Twin rooms have onsen water in their own baths.
Guests with tattoos are refused in the large baths (official FAQ).

- 01
Check-in 15:00, check-out 10:30. Dinner can't be served after 19:00, so call the inn if you'll arrive after 18:00.
- 02
The inn is a warren of buildings and extensions. Guests from 2022 to 2026 describe it as a maze; staff walked one guest's mother back from the bath, and a January 2026 guest found the route to dinner cold in winter.
- 03
It's popular with company trips and banquets (the largest hall seats 100), and the guests skew older, according to a July 2026 reviewer; a 2026 blogger saw no small children or noisy groups, while another blogger attended a company banquet with geisha.
- 04
Atami's fireworks can be watched from sea-facing rooms, and the inn sells special fireworks plans; book these early.
- 05
No pets. Babies still in nappies can't use the large baths; children's dinner is a kids' plate (omelette rice, fried shrimp). Free parking for about 40 cars; vehicles over 3.2 m tall can't pass the railway bridge on the way.
