Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

Fourteen rooms, each with its own free-flowing open-air bath facing Hatsushima, six free private baths, horses in the garden and a famous whole fried scorpionfish — at the top of a very steep road, with no lift and no large bath

Chikurinan Mizuno sits high on a slope above the fishing port of Ajiro, looking across Sagami Bay to Hatsushima and Ōshima. It's small — 14 rooms in a 1978 main building renovated in 2014 and a three-suite annex built in 2013 from old farmhouse timbers brought from snowy Niigata — and its draw is the water: every room has an ocean-view open-air bath, and all 21 baths, including six free private baths, run on the inn's own salty calcium-sodium chloride spring, which the inn describes as 100% free-flowing. It comes out so hot (about 63–70°C) that guests add cold water themselves; it's brownish, cloudy and very salty. There's no large public bath. Dinner and breakfast are served in your room, built around the signature yume-kasago — a whole scorpionfish fried and dressed with a black-vinegar, ginseng and royal-jelly sauce — with a choice of wagyu, abalone or spiny lobster to finish. Japanese guests rate it 4.7 across 718 reviews on one major site and 4.71 across 88 on another, with service and baths at 4.8. Complaints in 2025–2026 are mostly practical: a steep, winding access road, no lift and plenty of stairs, 40-minute private-bath slots, a scorpionfish some found too hard to eat, portions too big for older guests, and the open-air private bath Tenkū closed in winter since one of the two sources lost flow in 2024.

Guía para elegir habitación

Recomendadas

  • Miharashi (見晴し) and Hatsushima (初島), the 'kominka EX' Japanese-Western rooms

69㎡ rooms with a 190×110cm hinoki open-air bath. Miharashi, the northernmost room up 20 stairs, has two big windows over Sagami Bay, Hatsushima and Ōshima — 'far beyond good', a summer 2026 guest wrote, and one annex guest in January 2026 thought it a better view and value than the annex. Hatsushima is a spacious ground-floor corner room (the annex roof partly blocks its view) that suited a guest travelling with a wheelchair user in 2026.

  • Annex suites Keyaki (けやき), Kaede (かえで) and Sakura (さくら)

73–85㎡ suites in the 2013 farmhouse-timber annex, where guests say the meal grade steps up. Sakura is the only room reached step-free through a side entrance; Kaede is the only annex suite that accepts children.

Mejor evitar

  • Ajisai (あじさい) and Aoi (葵)

In 2026 guests in ground-floor Ajisai heard doors closing at night, found its bath a little dated and met a curt dinner server. Aoi, the largest standard room, is the only smoking room and one guest noticed a faint tobacco smell (2025). Children of primary-school age and under are accepted only in some rooms — check when booking.

La cocina a fondo

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.5/5

In-room breakfast with sun-dried horse mackerel, a medicinal paper hotpot, freshly grated wasabi, and miso soup made from the previous night's spiny lobster

Tell the inn your arrival time at least 30 minutes ahead for the station shuttle — Ajiro Station is unstaffed and there's no convenience store nearby. Book private-bath slots at the desk on arrival. Visit the horses (14:00–16:30 and 9:00–10:45; rides for ages 3–60). Stay two nights for a free sashimi platter.

Claves de la cena

4.5/5

Seasonal kaiseki in your room, starting at 18:00 or 18:30 (about 90 minutes); smaller portions on request. The fried scorpionfish is the dish nearly every review mentions; summer 2026 and September 2025 menus also had kinmedai grilled in salt koji, sea-urchin tofu, spiny lobster sashimi and a choice of wagyu, abalone or lobster cooked at the table. Draft beer is reasonably priced. Gripes in 2026: the scorpionfish 'far too hard to eat', a thin sauce and 'less food than before', dried fish served cold, portions too big for guests in their 60s and 70s, and a latest dinner start of 18:30. The teppanyaki steak lounge is currently suspended.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

The inn's own calcium-sodium chloride spring (hypertonic, about 63–70°C at source; figures for pH vary by source), brownish and very salty. The inn says every bath is 100% free-flowing; guests cool it themselves by adding water. Not currently fit for drinking.

Privacidad y ambiente

Every room has an ocean-view open-air bath, mostly hinoki, usable around the clock. Six private baths are free for guests in 40-minute slots (11:30–21:30 and 6:00–8:30): the large Chikurin, four identical window baths facing Hatsushima, and the roofless Tenkū — up 15–18 stairs, with shampoo and dryers provided. Tenkū has closed in winter since a source lost flow in 2024. There's no large public bath. Guests find 40 minutes short and the private baths draughty in winter.

Política sobre tatuajes

No policy found on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the inn. Every room has its own open-air bath.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

The road up is steep with sharp bends — hard for large cars (height limit 2.9m in the car park). Most guests use the free shuttle from JR Ajiro Station.

  2. 02

No lift, and many stairs and steps between rooms and baths.

  3. 03

    Check-in 14:00–18:00, check-out 10:30. No bringing your own alcohol.

  4. 04

Atami's fireworks can't be seen from the inn.

  5. 05

Prices aren't published on the official site; most guests on one booking site paid over ¥30,000 per person with two meals.
