Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

Atami's oldest inn (1806), with its own Seizaemon spring piped untreated into the shared baths and most rooms, and every meal served in your room — but it's a modern building in a crowded town centre, with little view, and a few 2024–2026 guests found it overpriced

Furuya has been run by the Uchida family since 1806, which makes it the oldest working inn in Atami. You enter through the Takeda-style gate used in Kurosawa's film Kagemusha, and the lobby gallery shows the inn's history: the journalist Tokutomi Sohō stayed here three to four months a year for two decades. The inn is the only user of the Seizaemon spring, one of the historic 'Seven Springs of Atami'. It is a sodium-calcium chloride spring that leaves the ground at about 90°C, and the inn says it adds no water, no heating, no filtration and no chlorine. The water fills the two shared baths and the private baths of every room type except the standard rooms, and the shared baths are drained every day. Every room is set with chairs and a table rather than floor seating, and dinner and breakfast are always served in the room. Japanese guests rate it 4.86 across 323 reviews on one leading site (service 4.92, food 4.91), 4.86 across about 570 on another, and 5.0 across 795 on a third. Reviewers praise the 13-course Kyoto-style kaiseki with abalone or A5 beef, the attentive room attendants, the free drinks in the room fridge, and how easy the inn is for babies and older relatives. The weak spots are just as consistent. To one 2026 guest the building felt like an ordinary modern inn, the shared baths are small and walled in, and the inn itself warns that no room has a real view. In 2024–2026 a few guests found the service scripted, found the furnishings cheap for the price, or reported dirty tap water. Two-meal stays for two start at about ¥82,000–105,000.

  • L and F rooms (main building) and the four H rooms in the annex — hinoki 'indoor open-air' baths

Rebuilt in 2021 (annex) and November 2022 (main building). Each has a hinoki tub of free-flowing spring water behind electric louvred blinds, so you can bathe in rain or wind. L rooms are 68㎡ and the annex rooms about 60㎡, all with chairs and a table. A January 2024 blogger found the renewed room 'all new and comfortable', and the annex sits above the Second Lobby library. One reviewer who stayed in an L room in July 2026 loved the bath, but in December 2025 another L-room guest found black grit coming out of the washbasin tap for the whole stay.

  • W (room 311), S and the new J room — the single-room types

W is the largest room at 140㎡, with 15- and 10-tatami rooms, a round granite open-air bath and no neighbours on either side. S (80㎡) adds a separate bedroom with Simmons beds and a round hinoki open-air bath. J (68㎡, beds plus tatami, open-air bath) opened on 26 July 2026. Only one of each exists. Note that outdoor baths have no shower, the S room has no changing area by its bath (December 2024), and J's bath has no handrail.

  • A standard rooms, and anyone hoping for a sea view

The 54㎡ A rooms have an ordinary bath, not spring water — you use the shared baths. The B type (54㎡) adds a one-person hinoki tub with spring water. The inn's own FAQ says no room has a view worth expecting and advises view-seekers to stay elsewhere. Redevelopment across the street has opened a distant sea view from some rooms for now, but an April 2025 guest described derelict buildings and demolition outside, and a September 2026 guest heard demolition noise.

Served in your room at a set time: a long spread with rice porridge as well as rice, Atami dried fish (a premium Kamatsuru himono for a small extra charge) and the inn's salted squid. Widely praised, though some older guests find it a lot of food

Check-in is 15:00–18:00 with no early entry (luggage is held), and check-out at 11:00 can't be extended. Beer, chūhai and soft drinks in the room fridge are free, as are drinks outside the shared baths and coffee in the lobby. On summer fireworks nights, guests get tickets for a reserved viewing deck, about a 7-minute walk. Parking is free. The final lane is narrow and easy to miss by car, so call the inn if you get lost.

Claves de la cena

4.5/5

A monthly Kyoto-style kaiseki of 13 courses, always served in the room (larger groups eat in a private dining room). Plans add live abalone grilled at the table, A5 Kagoshima beef fillet or simmered kinme-dai. Reviewers in 2024–2026 praise the care and pacing, and the abalone and kinme-dai most of all. Critics in 2026 found the food 'a step short' or merely 'so-so' for the price, and several older couples found 13 courses too many. Children's meals come in two sizes, and allergies affecting several dishes can mean a cancellation, so check in advance.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

The inn's own Seizaemon spring (Atami No. 16), a sodium-calcium chloride spring (hypotonic, alkaline, about 90°C at the source), used only by Furuya. According to the inn, the water reaches the shared baths about 20 m from the source with no water added, no heating, no filtration and no chlorine, though a pump mixes the water and natural salt is used against legionella. The baths are drained and refilled every day from 10:00 to 14:00. Because the source is so hot, the spring water is added in a slow trickle, so the tubs don't constantly overflow. Water reaches in-room baths at 70–85°C, and you cool it yourself with a mixing paddle or the cold-water tap. Standard A rooms do not have spring-water baths.

Privacidad y ambiente

One small bath for men and one for women, each with an ancient-hinoki indoor tub and an open-air tub (granite for men, Izu stone for women), open 14:00–10:00. There's no private family bath, no bath towels in the changing room (bring yours from the room), and babies still in nappies may not use the shared baths. Guests love the soft water, but some find the walled outdoor tubs closed-in and the baths crowded over the year-end holidays. Most guests bathe in their room's tub instead.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Check-in 15:00–18:00, check-out 11:00; no early check-in and no late check-out. Some discounted plans shorten this to 16:00/10:00 or 15:30/10:30.

  2. 02

Despite its 1806 founding, the inn is housed in modern buildings. The history lives in the gate, the old pine, the shrine and the gallery, and a February 2026 guest said the rooms 'don't feel historic'.

  3. 03

Very family-friendly: baby baths, bouncers and children's yukata on loan, futons laid early on request, and children's meals at 50% or 70% of the adult rate. Small children can't use the shared baths, though.

  4. 04

Every room has chairs and a table as standard, there's a lift and a loan wheelchair, and the whole building is non-smoking, with an outdoor smoking area by the lobby.

  5. 05

A minority of 2024–2026 reviews describe formulaic service, a dark and unattended entrance at check-in, thin futons, and grit in the tap water. One family paid ¥170,000 for a night in the annex in January 2026 and felt it wasn't worth it.
