Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

A village of sukiya cottages scattered through a 3,000-tsubo stone garden in the Atami hills, with onsen in every room's bath and much-praised kaiseki — but you walk outdoors over stone steps to everything, the shared baths are open-air only, and the cottages show their age

Atami Sekitei is the inn the Sekitei name grew from: on a hillside in Wada-chō above central Atami, a stone garden of about 3,000 tsubo (roughly one hectare) — Iyo water-stones, Kurama stone, old lanterns, koi ponds and little streams — threaded with stepping-stone paths and a bridge over a public road, and dotted with sukiya-style cottages. There are 24 rooms; the inn says every room's indoor bath uses its own hot spring, and five rooms add a private open-air bath. Both meals are kaiseki in Uzu, a renovated dining hall with private rooms. Japanese guests rate it 4.61 across 161 reviews on one leading site (food and service both 4.78) and 4.23 across 298 on another, where breakfast (4.45) and dinner (4.40) score highest and facilities (4.08) lowest. Bloggers writing between 2023 and 2025 loved the cottage-village feel, the free fridge drinks including bottled beer, the inn's chestnut sweets, the seasonal kaiseki and the care shown to small children; 2026 reviewers praise the okami and staff, from anniversary gifts to driving a guest who fell on the paving to hospital. The catches: you walk outdoors over uneven stone and steep steps to dinner and the baths, which are open-air only, with no indoor tub and a washing area mostly open to the rain; the cottages are Showa-era buildings, renovated inside but with worn tatami and fittings noted in September 2026; in-room baths can be small or lukewarm; and one September 2026 guest found the kaiseki arriving two dishes at a time, a post-COVID practice. The inn's weekday list rates run from ¥30,800 for a plain room and ¥39,600–49,500 for a cottage up to ¥88,000 and more for the special rooms.

Recomendadas

  • Cottages with an open-air bath — type A (Itō 伊東, Atagawa 熱川) and type S (Atami 熱海, Koganezaki 黄金崎)

The only room types (with the special room Ōgahama) that add a private open-air bath to the onsen indoor tub. A May 2026 family found an A cottage very spacious and clean with a bath that stayed hot, and a September 2026 couple in Atagawa loved its gate, hinoki indoor bath, stone open-air bath and Sekkisei amenities. But a September 2026 solo guest in an A cottage found worn furnishings and tatami and a steep stone stairway up to dinner and the baths. Weekday list rates: A ¥49,500, S from ¥66,000.

  • Kihinshitsu (貴賓室) suites — e.g. Yugashima (湯ヶ島), close to the lobby

41㎡, renovated in December 2020 according to one booking site, with a bedroom. A blogger in a 2023 write-up had a two-storey cottage with a living room, onsen bath and private garden downstairs, a bedroom with garden views upstairs and a toilet on each floor — and only a short walk from the lobby. A December 2025 guest watched the Atami fireworks from a Kihinshitsu room. From ¥55,000 on weekdays.

Mejor evitar

  • Plain rooms (一般客室) and some sukiya cottages (数寄屋造り離れ客室)

The five plain rooms are 14.58㎡; a March 2026 guest in one found many stairs, a single thin mattress and an 'old-fashioned inn' feel, though an October 2025 solo guest was happy. Sukiya cottages (about 22㎡) are Showa-era houses with renovated walls, ceilings and bathrooms: in June 2024 a repeat blogger in Mitohama could see into a neighbour's window, and 2025–2026 reviewers mention old fittings, cramped in-room tubs (even in a special room in March 2026) and a hard up-and-down walk to the open-air baths.

Consenso sobre el desayuno

A set Japanese breakfast in Uzu at 8:00 or 8:30 — your choice of grilled dried horse mackerel, ebodai or salmon, house-made tofu that one blogger called the best they'd eaten, salad and rice from a wooden tub; well liked, though in a 2025 write-up everything except the rice and miso soup was pre-set and cold

If you want a slow dinner, ask at the start for dishes one at a time — the advice of a September 2026 guest. Book a private open-air bath on arrival (same-day reservations only). Take a taxi rather than walking up from Kinomiya Station: an October 2025 guest pulling a suitcase got lost on the steep streets and phoned the front desk four or five times. The fridge drinks are free, and a supermarket is a short walk away.

Claves de la cena

4.4/5

Seasonal kaiseki at 18:00 or 19:00 in Uzu's private rooms or main hall, with a main course chosen from three (for example kinmedai sautée, wagyu stewed in red wine or duck), sashimi such as bluefin tuna and raw shirasu, a grilled course kept warm on a charcoal brazier and a green-tea okowa rice to finish. Bloggers in 2023–2025 and most 2026 reviewers rate the food highly, and allergies, pregnancy and children's needs are handled. Complaints: a September 2026 guest found dishes served two at a time and far too fast, a 2025 blogger heard every word through a movable partition, a reviewer was put in the big hall instead of a private room in August 2025, and a rare sake on the menu was out of stock.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

The inn's three own wells of calcium–sodium chloride spring (hypertonic, neutral, high temperature), salty enough to taste. According to the inn's listing on one booking site, the shared open-air baths are free-flowing with heating and added water, while the private baths, in-room open-air baths and in-room indoor baths are listed as not free-flowing, with heating and added water. A May 2025 reviewer noticed a faint chlorine smell in the shared bath.

Privacidad y ambiente

Two single-sex open-air baths that don't swap: the men's 古狸の湯 ('old tanuki'), with a changing room built from part of a 200-year-old village headman's house moved from the Tōhoku region, and the women's Goshinboku (御神木の湯), with a blue-stone pool and a tub carved from jade. Both are open from check-in until 10:00 the next morning, and because most rooms have their own onsen, reviewers often have them to themselves. There is no indoor tub and only part of the washing area is roofed, so rain and winter are hard. Two private open-air baths, Sagasawa and Imaihama, cost ¥1,500 for 45 minutes (up to six people), booked on the day.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Check-in 14:00, check-out 11:00 — a long stay by ryokan standards. Arrive by car at the front entrance and staff park it for you (25 spaces). A bathing tax of ¥150 is added.

  2. 02

The whole inn is outdoor stone paving, stepping stones and steep stone steps between rooms, dining hall and baths. Reviewers in 2024–2026 warn it's hard going for older guests and toddlers, and in January 2026 a guest in their eighties lost their footing and fell into a pond. Change into proper shoes to explore.

  3. 03

Children are welcome: a children's dinner costs ¥11,000, or 70% of the adult rate for a child's kaiseki. A family with a toddler in November 2023 was given a private dining room, a small yukata and free rice and miso soup.

  4. 04

The upscale annex, Bettei Sakuraoka Saryo, is a separate inn at the far end of the same garden, with its own website and booking pages — make sure you're booking the main Atami Sekitei.

  5. 05

In September 2026 the inn warned of phishing messages sent via WhatsApp to people who booked through some booking platforms, asking for card details or urgent payment. The inn says it never contacts guests that way.
