Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

Yudanaka's modern alternative: top-floor mountain-view baths, a rooftop bar and sushi made at your private dining table — but only some rooms have been renovated, and the older ones show their age

Aburaya Tosen takes its name from its roots as a rapeseed-oil merchant (abura-ya) beside the Yomase River; the company dates from 1967, and the inn says it has been welcoming travellers for more than 60 years. Where Yudanaka's other well-known inn, Yorozuya, is all about one historic bathhouse, this is the modern, amenity-packed choice: a 32-room concrete building with two top-floor baths facing the Hokushin Gogaku peaks, a rooftop bar with dome seating, a private lounge for guests in rooms with open-air baths, and a craft-brewery complex next door. Guests rate it 4.7 across 1,647 reviews on one major site (dinner 4.8) and 4.52 across about 1,500 on another; most of the recent evidence comes from those booking-site reviews, backed by two blog stays in 2024. The praise centres on dinner in private dining rooms — the house 'Aburaya fondue', seasonal skewers you fry yourself in rapeseed oil, and sushi made at your table — and on warm, attentive service, with the okami greeting tables and waving departing cars out of sight. The four special rooms add an open-air bath, a private löyly sauna and a dining room where a chef fries tempura and makes sushi in front of you. The catches, from 2025–2026 reviews: rooms that haven't been renovated feel dated (one guest moved into an older room in August 2026 found a drain smell, stained chairs and peeling wallpaper), standard rooms have a shower booth rather than a tub, room baths can run very hot, and a few mention thin explanations, a crowded lounge and an unstaffed front desk. Two-meal stays start at about ¥22,000 per person; most reviewers paid over ¥30,000.

Guía para elegir habitación

Recomendadas

  • Special rooms Saya, Kagome, Akarimasu and Rindō (88–93㎡)

Each has a terrace open-air bath, a private self-service löyly sauna with a cold bath, kumiko woodwork and a dining room off its own corridor where a chef comes in to fry tempura and make sushi. A blogger in Kagome (room 526) in May 2024 called the chef's-table set-up a first among the inns they had tried, and a September 2024 blogger said the tempura and sushi made at the table were the highlight. An October 2026 guest barely visited the shared baths, looping sauna, cold bath and onsen instead. From about ¥47,300 per person with two meals; free dates are scarce.

  • Renovated open-air-bath rooms in Tōkatei and Senyūkan

Tōkatei has six rooms with a hinoki open-air bath above the Yomase River (Type A: 10 tatami; Type B: 10 + 4.5 tatami with a sunken kotatsu); the renovated Senyūkan rooms pair 10 tatami with a twin bedroom and look out to the Hokushin Gogaku peaks. Both include the Toki lounge and a choice of breakfast. A November 2025 guest arrived to the smell of new tatami after renovation; a September 2026 family found the room spacious and spotless but warned of a step and low clearance for tall guests. From about ¥41,800 per person for the renovated Senyūkan type.

Mejor evitar

  • Standard 10-tatami rooms, especially ones not yet renovated

The cheapest rooms (from about ¥22,000 per person with two meals) have a shower booth rather than a tub, so you'll rely on the top-floor baths. In August 2026 a couple moved out of a renovated room after a pipe failure were given one with a drain smell, stained chairs, peeling toilet wallpaper and a broken fridge, and were refunded ¥10,000; a July 2026 guest noted a worn table runner and no light remote. Room baths elsewhere can run hot — an April 2026 guest found theirs too hot to use at night.

La cocina a fondo

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.5/5

A buffet of about 40–50 Japanese and Western dishes (7:30–9:00, last entry 8:30), reworked in 2026 around Shinshu wellness food with oyakake soba, pork shabu and a sasa-zushi corner — or, in open-air-bath rooms, a private set breakfast with a rolled omelette cooked in front of you

Booking on the official site halves the price of the private open-air bath or bedrock bath and adds a free snack at the rooftop bar. Setsugetsuka, the 8th-floor rooftop bar (20:00–23:00, paid, open to non-guests), closed over winter 2025–26 because of snow, reopened on 15 May 2026 and still shuts in bad weather. Check in early if you want a choice of dinner time, and note that the Toki lounge pours free alcohol only from about 17:00 to 19:00.

Claves de la cena

4.6/5

Every dinner is served in one of 23 private rooms at Nanohana-kōji, in three courses: the lighter Shun'yū; the standard Tōka, with Aburaya fondue (seasonal skewers you deep-fry yourself in rapeseed oil, a nod to the oil-merchant past), sushi made at your table and A4 Shinshu beef; and the premium Zei, with top-grade Shinshu beef steak, a fish of your choice, kamado-cooked rice and a five-piece dessert. In June 2026 the menu was reworked around Shinshu fermentation and ageing. Reviewers from 2024 to 2026 praise inventive, generous food and the table-side sushi. Complaints: only two pieces of sushi (September 2026), thin explanations, portions too big for some, gaps between courses, and a regular's sense in March 2026 that the food had changed, for better and worse, with a new head chef.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

A sodium chloride spring (alkaline, hypotonic, high temperature; pH 8.59) that reviewers say rises beneath the building. Ikyu lists the shared indoor and open-air baths as free-flowing with added water, and the private open-air bath and room baths as not free-flowing (with added water) — though the official site calls the Tōkatei room baths free-flowing, so ask if it matters.

Privacidad y ambiente

Two baths on the top (7th) floor swap between men and women at 19:00–19:30: Yumeji, with a glass-walled indoor bath, open-air bath, lie-down bath, cascade bath and sauna facing the Hokushin Gogaku peaks, and Yumemi, facing the Shiga Highlands, with a löyly sauna and a large cold bath. They open 14:30–1:00 and 6:00–9:30, with towels provided. Reviewers in 2025–2026 often had them almost to themselves, especially during dinner; some found the water on the hot side, others the shared baths lukewarm. The private open-air bath Suigetsu (Shigaraki tub, 15:30–22:50) costs ¥2,200 for 50 minutes, and a July 2026 guest found its shower weak and lighting dim. The private bedrock bath Riraku costs ¥1,650 per person.
