Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

A 23-room harbour-front inn that won Japan's Ryokan Koshien in 2025, famous for in-room dinners of whole simmered kinmedai and a front-row view of Atami's fireworks — but the shared baths are recirculated, most rooms allow smoking, and it can't adjust meals for allergies

Shukaen Yunohanazen is a family company founded in 1951 and now run by its third-generation president, Fujima Takashi: 23 rooms in two wings facing Atami Port, every one looking over the bay, with the Atami Kaijō fireworks launched almost in front of the windows. In February 2025 it won Ryokan Koshien, a national competition for inns, on the strength of a 'one-to-one' service philosophy, and Rakuten Travel ranked its food third in Japan in 2024. The ratings back that up: 4.61 across 1,456 rated reviews on Rakuten Travel (dinner 4.71, service 4.67) and 4.6 across 3,360 on Jalan (dinner 4.7). Because only one recent first-hand blog was found — a family that watched the July 2026 fireworks from its room — most of the recent evidence here comes from booking-site reviews. Dinner and breakfast are normally served in your room; the signature is the 'original Atami-ni', a whole kinmedai simmered with grilled mikan, one fish for two people, with abalone grilled alive at the table. Eleven rooms have their own open-air onsen bath; the rooftop baths look over the harbour and town lights. Know before you book: a 2020 report shows the shared baths watered down, heated, recirculated and chlorinated; the inn no longer accepts allergy or menu changes; most rooms allow smoking; and 2025–2026 complaints mention dated rooms, a damp-smelling closet, heavy old futons, an all-night motor hum, trees blocking fireworks from a third-floor room and two disappointing service experiences. Two-meal stays run about ¥21,000–37,000 per person.

Recomendadas

  • Kafūkan (花風館) rooms with open-air onsen bath, ideally the renewed ones

Nine rooms in the Kafūkan wing have a balcony bath filled with hot-spring water; three were renovated in June 2021 and one in January 2023. A 2025 stay in the 10-tatami Hanataba room described Ryukyu tatami, a granite tub with spring water constantly pouring in, a two-seat terrace and a powder room. Booking-site reviewers in August–October 2026 loved soaking whenever they liked while watching the bay or the night view; check-out is 11:00 instead of 10:00.

  • Kashūkan (花秀館) VIP rooms (貴賓室) on the top floor — Japanese or Japanese-Western with beds

Only two, with an open-air onsen bath renewed in February 2023, ReFa amenities and the inn's top menu, Hanazakari; on this plan a cook normally comes to your room to make breakfast in front of you (one September 2026 guest had the tamagoyaki cooked at the table). A December 2025 guest was told on the day that the in-room breakfast cooking was cancelled for infection-control reasons, so ask in advance.

Mejor evitar

  • Lower-floor rooms on fireworks nights, and standard Kashūkan rooms

An August 2026 guest who booked a fireworks plan got a third-floor room where a tall tree blocked part of the show; a fifth-floor room (506) had only 'a little' tree in view in October 2026. Standard 10-tatami and 8+8-tatami Kashūkan rooms have a non-onsen bath, and an October 2026 guest found the closet smelled damp. A December 2025 guest in a sixth-floor end room heard a motor hum all night. The new Japanese-Western rooms opening in November 2026 (beds, non-smoking, wheelchair-friendly) serve meals in a private dining room, not in the room.

4.5/5

A Japanese breakfast served in your room — dried horse mackerel, natto, grated yam and seaweed, sometimes Ise-ebi in the miso soup — rated 4.66 on Rakuten Travel; an October 2026 guest found the miso soup and dried horse mackerel lukewarm

Book the free shuttle from Atami Station (15:00, 16:00 or 17:00) by phone in advance — without a reservation there is no pick-up — and arrive by 17:30, as dinner starts only at 17:45 or 18:00. Order extra dishes at least two days ahead. For the fireworks, ask for a fifth- or sixth-floor room. There's no ice machine or vending machine and the shop closes at 20:00; outside drinks cost ¥1,650 per person in corkage.

Claves de la cena

4.6/5

A seasonal course of about 10–12 dishes served in your room (or a private dining room on some last-minute plans). The standard Hanaguruma menu is built around the 'original Atami-ni' kinmedai — one fish for two, simmered with grilled mikan — plus abalone grilled alive, sashimi and sakura-shrimp rice you can finish as ochazuke; the Hanafubuki upgrade adds Ise-ebi sashimi and a choice of abalone or beef steak. Bloggers and 2026 reviewers call it abundant ('skip lunch'), with a late-night snack left in the room. Critics in 2025–2026 found the kinmedai too sweet, a pork hotpot too fatty, and courses rushed in a noisy dining room. The inn has stopped all allergy and menu adjustments.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

A calcium-sodium chloride spring (a mix of Atami wells No. 283 and 290, 50.9°C, neutral) delivered from a shared storage tank. A 2020 day-visit report noted the posted information that the shared baths are watered down, heated, recirculated and disinfected, with a chlorine smell at the spout; the rooftop Gekka Bijin seemed to combine recirculation with overflow. The inn does not publish treatment details for the in-room open-air baths, which are described as hot-spring baths.

Privacidad y ambiente

Two bath areas on the sixth floor and roof swap between men and women: Tsuki no Yu (the rooftop open-air bath Gekka Bijin, with the best night view, plus an indoor bath and a one-person kame-buro jar bath) and Hana no Yu (the open-air Tsukimisō, an indoor bath and a Shigaraki tsubo-buro). Hours are check-in to 18:30, 19:30 to 1:00 and 5:00 to 9:00, so you can try both in one day. One October 2026 guest worried about being seen through the big-bath windows and, at night, in the room bath despite its bamboo blind. A free bus (15:30, 16:30; reservation required) runs to the sister inn Yuyado Mikan no Ki for its baths — bring towels. No kashikiri private baths.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Check-in 15:00–18:00 (arrive by 17:30 for dinner), check-out 10:00, or 11:00 in rooms with an open-air bath. Return shuttles to Atami Station leave at 9:00 and 10:00 (plus 11:00 for open-air-bath rooms); parking is ¥1,100 a night.

  2. 02

Allergy and menu changes are no longer accepted at all — one December 2025 family could eat less than half the meal. Primary-school children get a junior kaiseki, younger children a kids' plate.

  3. 03

Smoking is allowed in all rooms except the new Japanese-Western rooms opening in November 2026; ask for deodorising when you book if smoke bothers you.

  4. 04

Outside food and drink carry a ¥1,650-per-person charge, and ice for your own drinks costs ¥1,100–1,650 — an April 2026 guest's dispute over ice soured an otherwise expensive stay.

  5. 05

Cancellation (Rakuten Travel): free until 8 days before, 30% from 7 days, 50% the day before, 100% on the day. Fireworks and holiday plans can't be changed or cancelled from one month before.
