Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

Kurokawa's big, sociable inn: seven free-flowing baths, including a floodlit bamboo-grove bath and two free private baths, plus buffet dinners with free-flow drinks and a free evening bar. It's a busy house of about 55 rooms, though, and 2026 reviews flag grubby baths and cold grill dishes

Yusai is the opposite of Kurokawa's small hideaways. It's a large riverside inn of about 55 rooms near the entrance to the village, run by the Shin Nihon Hotels group, with a glass-walled lobby overlooking the valley. The draw is the baths and the open bar. The inn says every tub is free-flowing spring water: four large indoor baths, three roofed semi-open-air baths and two private baths. The star is Chikurin no Yu, a stone bath for about 30 people facing a floodlit bamboo grove. The two private baths are free and need no booking. Dinner and breakfast are buffets, with chef-made sushi, tempura, a charcoal grill and shabu-shabu at dinner, plus 90 minutes of free-flow alcohol and a free self-service bar until 22:00. Japanese guests rate it 4.29 across 2,122 reviews on one major site (baths 4.43) and 4.3 across 1,132 on another. Most recent evidence comes from these booking-site reviews, backed by blogs from September 2025 and April 2026. Guests praise the bamboo bath, the sound of the river from the rooms, the tuna sushi, breakfast French toast and attentive staff. The 2026 complaints are consistent: grimy shower hoses, mouldy stools and scaled mirrors in the shared baths (July–September), weeds blocking bath views, a musty special room, grilled skewers served cold, fewer dishes than the photos, noisy groups in the bar, and queues for the only two private baths. The guest-only baths are down stairs with no lift and no handrails. The operator reported no major damage from the July 2026 Kumamoto earthquake. Two-meal stays cost about ¥25,000–30,000 or more per person in 2026.

Guía para elegir habitación

Recomendadas

  • Akarikoji (灯小路) Japanese-Western rooms (9, 12 or 14 tatami plus a twin bedroom, 30–37㎡)

Modern Japanese rooms in the Akarikoji wing, with a separate twin bedroom, a shower booth and a balcony facing the stream and bamboo. A September 2025 blogger liked the two washbasins and the bamboo outside. A blogger writing in December 2025 found the 14-mat room (No. 218) almost too big for two, and an October 2026 guest sat on the balcony listening to the river. The Junior Suite (80㎡, 10 tatami plus four beds, up to seven people) is the largest room and drew praise from families in June and October 2026.

  • Special rooms Yamamomiji (山紅葉) and Yamazakura (山桜) with a private open-air bath (38㎡, 14 + 8 tatami)

The only rooms with their own outdoor tub, in hinoki (Yamamomiji) or stone (Yamazakura), for two to five people on futons. A September 2026 birthday stay in Yamamomiji found handwritten staff messages, free fridge drinks and a thick mattress. The catches: the same guest worried that a window across the way could see into the bath through a thin blind, and another September 2026 guest found the room musty, the water flow weak and the lighting dim. The inn doesn't say whether these baths use spring water.

Mejor evitar

  • Main-building (本館) Japanese rooms with beds (6, 8 or 10 tatami, 10–18㎡) and the Akarikoji Western twin (18㎡)

The cheapest rooms, and the ones most often mentioned in complaints. They have a toilet but no bath, and the bed rooms and the Western twin can't take children sharing a bed. In 2026, guests in these rooms reported a smell that led to a room change (September), machine noise from outside (September) and a broken shower (April). Across the inn, 2026 guests also mention few power outlets and weak hair dryers, and one June guest arrived to a power cut and a washbasin with no hot water. Several found them dated but clean. An April 2026 blogger in an 8-mat bed room called it simple, clean and big enough for two.

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.2/5

A buffet in the Yūzentei dining hall, 7:30–9:30 (last entry 9:00). Expect Oguni rice, zaru tofu, sweet-simmered 'morning beef' with an onsen egg, karashi renkon, fish from the grill and French toast cooked fresh. Many guests like it more than dinner, though dishes aren't refilled after 9:00

You pick a dinner slot (18:00, 18:30 or 19:00) at check-in and can't change it. On a near-full Saturday, the 18:00 slot was gone by 15:20. Free COSTA coffee and soft drinks are served in the lobby 14:00–18:00, and the free self-service bar runs 19:00–22:00 with last orders at 21:30. The private baths are first come, first served, so try them at off-peak times. The front desk lends extension leads, but bring your own hair dryer if it matters to you.

Claves de la cena

3.9/5

A buffet in Yūzentei with 90 minutes of free-flow drinks, including Premium Malts on draught, local sake and shochu, Hita plum wine and wine. Highlights in 2025–2026 included chef-made sushi with red-vinegar rice and bluefin tuna, whole sea bream or amberjack sashimi, freshly fried tempura and oysters, a robatayaki-style grill, individual shabu-shabu pots, curry and cotton candy you spin yourself. Horse sashimi and steak cost extra. Reviews split. An April 2026 blogger called it a small but high-quality spread with top-class sushi, but 2026 critics found the grilled skewers cold and hard, fewer dishes than in the photos, few desserts, loud background music and slow plate clearing.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

A sodium sulphate-chloride spring. The official site lists it as chloride-sulphate and sodium chloride springs, and an April 2026 blogger found it clear and soft with a faint sulphur smell. The inn says every shared tub, including the large baths, the semi-open-air baths and the private baths, is free-flowing (gensen kakenagashi). Several guests found the water on the hot side.

Privacidad y ambiente

There are two bath complexes. The guest-only Mahoroba baths in the basement are Chikurin no Yu, the largest, facing a floodlit bamboo grove, and Sōhi no Yu, two hinoki-framed tubs leading to the roofed Keiryū no Yu by the stream. The two sides swap between men and women: in April 2026, Chikurin was the men's bath 15:00–19:30 and 6:00–9:30 and the women's 20:00–24:00. The Yawaragi baths (indoor Yutaki no Yu and semi-open-air Jusai no Yu) don't swap. They are shared with day visitors on Kurokawa's bath-hopping pass, and guests of the separate sister inn Yusai Bekkan also use Yusai's large baths. Bring a bath towel from your room to Yawaragi. Two private baths, the octagonal Oguni-cedar Sugi no Yu (barrier-free) and the stone Nagomi no Yu, each fit about five and are free with no booking. All baths are open 15:00–24:00 and 6:00–9:30. Guests in 2026 complained about overgrown views, dirty washing areas and waits for the private baths.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Check-in 15:00, check-out 10:00. Parking is free. The inn recommends coming by car because buses are infrequent; a 2025 blog says staff collect guests from the Kurokawa Onsen bus stop if arranged in advance.

  2. 02

Not fully barrier-free: the guest-only baths are reached only by stairs and have no handrails. The baths shared with day visitors can be reached by lift, and the Sugi no Yu private bath is barrier-free.

  3. 03

The inn does not cater for food allergies because meals are buffets. You can bring your own safe food if you tell the inn when booking.

  4. 04

On 28 September 2026 the inn warned that its reservation-system provider had been hacked. Some guests who booked by 21 September for stays from that date received fake WhatsApp messages asking for card details or payment. Don't click links or pay; contact the inn directly.

  5. 05

The rooftop observatory has been closed since May 2024 because of an equipment fault. The rooftop terrace with its clear dome tent stays open except in rain, and 2026 guests borrowed binoculars or a telescope for stargazing.
