Riverside open-air baths and some of Kurokawa's warmest service, a shuttle ride from the village — excellent value, if you book a room with its own bath
Yamamizuki is a 21-room inn beside a mountain stream about 2 km outside the centre of Kurokawa Onsen, and Japanese guests rate it very highly: 4.64 out of 5 across 484 reviews on one major booking site, 4.8 across 578 on another (baths 4.9) and 4.5 on a specialist onsen site, where service scores a perfect 5.0. The draw is bathing next to running water. The inn calls the men's open-air bath, Yūkoku-no-yu, its symbol, where you hear the river and watch the trees move; women have their own open-air bath, Mori-no-yu, reached by a path through riverside woods. Bloggers describe hot water — around 45°C outdoors — thick with mineral flakes, and a spring the inn calls gentle on the skin. The service is what turns guests into fans: in 2022 luggage went ahead to the inn while guests were dropped in the village to explore, in 2026 reviewers still describe being met in the car park and waved off at checkout, staff greet guests even outside the property, and one blogger with decades of onsen trips called it their favourite. Two 2022 bloggers paid about ¥40,000 for two with dinner and breakfast and wondered how the inn could charge so little; 2026 reviewers report roughly ¥42,000–60,000 or more for two. Criticism is mild but consistent: meals can arrive slowly, dinner has occasionally been served cooler than it should be, two guests (the latest in September 2026) found stains on the tatami, a 2026 guest heard neighbours through thin walls, and older reviews found the cooking refined rather than hearty.

Rechecked October 2026: the free village shuttle ended in 2022 (the inn now collects bus arrivals at the Kurokawa Onsen stop), prices have risen to roughly ¥42,000–60,000+ for two, and the inn reported no damage from the July 2026 Kumamoto earthquake. Reviews stay excellent (4.8 across 578 on one site), with a second report of tatami stains.

Type C (two tatami rooms with a riverside bath)
Five of these rooms. Two bloggers upgraded into one in 2022 and were overwhelmed: past a small garden, a roofed semi-open-air bath sits in its own hut by the stream, filled with flowing hot-spring water. If you want one room that sums up Yamamizuki, this is it.
Suichiku (翠竹) and the other Western-style rooms with a bath
Suichiku pairs a small 4.5-tatami room with a double bedroom and its own bath looking onto a courtyard garden; a 2024 guest praised the greenery and how well they slept. Kasui (花水, twin beds) and Fūgetsu (風月, the largest room) also have their own baths and beds instead of futons.

Types A, B and TB, and Karin (華林)
Twelve of the 21 rooms have no bath of their own. They are the value choice and the shared baths are excellent, but the riverside in-room bath is what bloggers remember most. Book the room type you want directly: upgrades in the stories we read were a lucky bonus, not something to count on.

La cocina a fondo
Consenso sobre el desayuno
4.4/5A Japanese breakfast of simmered tofu, overnight-dried fish, an onsen egg and miso soup full of vegetables — guests describe gentle flavours that 'sink into the body'
After checkout the inn will hold your luggage, so you can walk around Kurokawa and pick it up later at the shuttle point — plan your last onsen-hop around it.
Claves de la cena
4.3/5Kaiseki served in private rooms in the dining area Hana-henpen (花片々); in 2022 dinner started at 18:00 only. Bloggers describe seared Spanish mackerel sashimi, yamame trout, Higo beef steak, lily-bulb dumplings, Oguni rice and a dango-jiru soup with butter melting on top; horse sashimi can be added. Recent guests praise how delicate each dish is. The complaints are mostly about pace — meals arriving slowly, and in older reviews food going cold between courses — plus a few older guests who found the menu light.
Onsen y bienestar: la realidad
A simple hot spring, weakly acidic and very hot at the source, which the inn describes as low-irritation and moisturising. Bloggers note abundant mineral flakes (yu-no-hana) in the open-air bath.
Separate baths by gender: the men's open-air Yūkoku-no-yu and indoor hinoki and cut-stone baths (Masurao); for women, the riverside open-air Mori-no-yu and the high-ceilinged indoor Fūjin-no-yu, with a short path between them you can walk without dressing. There is also a private bath, Saotome, for ¥2,000 per 50 minutes (15:00–21:00). Guests may also use the baths at the sister inns Miyama Sansō and Shinmeikan. The men's Yūkoku-no-yu was renovated in summer 2024. The outdoor baths run hot — about 45°C in 2022 — so short soaks may suit you better.
Not addressed in any source we read. The private bath and the rooms with their own bath let you bathe without sharing.

Location: about 2 km from the village centre. The free village shuttle the inn ran from Kaze-no-ya ended in May 2022; now the inn picks up guests arriving by bus at the Kurokawa Onsen bus stop if you give your arrival time when booking, and it no longer books taxis.
- 02
Day visitors can use both outdoor baths (Yūkoku-no-yu for men, Mori-no-yu for women) from 10:00 to 15:00 for ¥600; overnight guests have the outdoor baths 15:00–22:00 and 6:00–10:00, and the indoor baths 15:00 to 10:00 the next morning. Check-in 15:00, check-out 11:00. All rooms are non-smoking.

Prices have risen since 2022, when couples paid about ¥40,000 for two with two meals: April–September 2026 reviewers paid roughly ¥21,000–30,000+ per person. The inn reported no damage from the July 2026 Kumamoto earthquake and stayed open, though local transport was disrupted.
