Kurokawa's bath-hopping inn: 13 free-flowing baths under one roof, including the famous open-air Taki-no-yu and four private baths that are free for guests. But the best outdoor baths are mixed, day bathers share them until 21:00, and there are no credit cards and no young children
Ikoi Ryokan is a 13-room inn on Kawabata-dōri in the middle of Kurokawa village, with long wooden corridors, thick beams, thatched-roof baths and an irori hearth by the entrance, where a foot bath and onsen eggs draw passers-by. The draw is the water: 13 baths under one roof, fed by a sulphurous spring at 68°C that the inn says is free-flowing around the clock. Its open-air Taki-no-yu is the only bath in Kurokawa on the 'Japan's 100 best famous and hidden hot springs' list, and there's a standing bath, guest-only baths and four private baths that are free for staying guests. Japanese guests rate it 4.7 across 2,254 reviews on one major site (dinner and breakfast both 4.8) and 4.71 across 804 on another. Most recent evidence comes from these booking-site reviews, backed by a blog from a winter 2022–23 stay. Reviewers in 2025–2026 say they didn't need Kurokawa's bath-hopping pass, praise kaiseki dinners of horse sashimi, Aso beef steak and grilled yamame, and describe warm staff, birthday surprises and lifts from the annex. The catches: Taki-no-yu and two neighbouring outdoor baths are officially mixed bathing, day bathers use many baths until 21:00, and the main baths close from 22:00 to 6:30. Complaints from 2025–2026 include woodsmoke drifting into rooms above the hearth, an air conditioner that kept cutting out, a toilet that barely flushed, minimal amenities, a steep walk to the annex and a breakfast hygiene problem (August 2025). The inn takes no credit cards and no children of primary-school age or younger. Two-meal stays cost about ¥23,000–30,000 or more per person in 2026.

The Dandan annex rooms (Enishi, Nozomi, Megumi) and the detached Fubō, each with its own free-flowing onsen bath
Five of the 13 rooms have their own free-flowing bath: these four and Matsu in the main building. A blogger who stayed in Enishi in winter 2022–23 found a semi-open bath facing a stream, running 24 hours, with a stronger sulphur smell than the main baths, plus a mini-kitchen. A March 2026 guest found the annex rooms well renovated, with a bath big enough for two, and never went to the main baths. Fubō is a 30-tatami old-farmhouse-style room with a big rock bath (April 2026), and Megumi is a two-storey house of about 80㎡ for groups. Staff drive you to the main building for meals and baths. One booking site priced these rooms at about ¥29,000–30,000 per person in 2026.
Larger main-building rooms: Daikan (3F), Yuri and Ume (2F), or Matsu with its own bath
Daikan has a wood-floored room with two beds plus tatami, and four guests found it roomy even with two futons laid (October 2026). Yuri has a terrace for cooling off after the bath (October 2025), and Ume is a two-room Japanese suite of 6 and 8 tatami. Matsu, a Japanese room for up to three, is the only main-building room with its own free-flowing bath. A June 2026 couple stayed there for their anniversary and found it calm and atmospheric. Main-building guests are closest to the 13 baths and the dining rooms.

Rooms above the entrance hearth, the annex if walking is hard, and anyone expecting hotel-style amenities
In October 2026 smoke from the firewood hearth below drifted into one room, and in May 2026 a family's room and clothes smelled of woodsmoke. Other 2026 complaints include a bedroom air conditioner that cut out repeatedly at night (July), a toilet that took 10 minutes to refill (September), a third guest put on a rollaway bed (October) and two chairs for three people (September). Amenities are basic: one March 2026 guest found no skincare products, no bottled water and paper cups. The annex is farther from the main building than many expect, up a steep slope, and an August 2026 guest felt its open gate and flimsy key weren't secure. The main building has many steps, which an elderly guest found hard in May 2026.

La cocina a fondo
Consenso sobre el desayuno
4.5/5A Japanese breakfast in the dining room at 8:00 or 8:30, with grilled salmon, local dishes and a choice of Oguni white rice or sweet-potato porridge. It's generally praised as gentle and generous, though in October 2026 one guest didn't want karashi renkon (mustard-stuffed lotus root) in the morning, and another missed milk
Give your arrival time in advance and staff will collect you from the Kurokawa Onsen bus stop. Staying guests can use the private baths free whenever they're empty, with no booking (day visitors pay ¥1,500 for them from 10:00 to 15:00). The quietest time for the main baths is after day bathing ends at 21:00 and before they close at 22:00. Birthday cakes can be ordered by phone up to two days ahead, and the red chanchanko vest for a 60th-birthday (kanreki) celebration is lent free.
Claves de la cena
4.6/5A seasonal kaiseki in the inn's dining rooms at 18:00 or 18:30, built around marbled Kumamoto horse sashimi and Aso Ō-gyū beef steak. A winter 2022–23 blogger's menu also included shrimp bisque, kampachi, sawara and flounder sashimi, a Shōgoin daikon and Rindō pork hotpot, salt-grilled yamame from Takamori, beef-tail chawanmushi, Oguni rice and Jersey-milk ice cream, plus one free drink each. Reviewers in 2025–2026 call dinner seasonal, beautifully presented and just the right amount; a September 2026 guest couldn't finish it. One November 2025 guest found the dining room too dim to see the food. In-room dinner is limited to three couples a day at extra cost. Dislikes can't be swapped, and fully allergen-free and vegetarian meals aren't offered.
Onsen y bienestar: la realidad
The inn describes its spring as a simple spring with salt, sulphur and hydrogen sulphide, at 68°C and free-flowing (kakenagashi) 24 hours a day. The five rooms with their own baths (Matsu, Fubō, Enishi, Nozomi and Megumi) are also listed as free-flowing. The site doesn't say whether any shared bath is heated or cooled. A July 2026 guest found the water on the hot side and added cold water in a private bath.
The 13 baths spread through the building like a maze. The open-air Taki-no-yu, Utase-yu and Hako-yu are officially mixed baths, and they're women-only from 6:30 to 8:30. Bijin-yu and the Tachi-yu standing bath are women-only except from 6:30 to 8:30, when men staying at the inn can use them. The guest-only So-no-yu (a cave-like rock bath with lying and pouring baths) swaps between men and women, and there's a guest-only Hinoki-buro too. Four private baths, including Kazoku-buro, Ōgi-no-yu and Tsukiakari-no-yu, are free for guests whenever empty. Day bathers (¥800) use the outdoor baths, Bijin-yu and Tachi-yu from 8:30 to 21:00, and a May 2026 guest found all the day visitors unsettling. The main baths close from 22:00 to 6:30, so in late November 2025 the women's baths were crowded at night and in the morning. In 2026 guests also found the route between baths confusing and slippery (April and June) and rain leaking in (March). Photos aren't allowed in baths that don't lock.
No policy found on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the inn. The free private baths and the five rooms with their own baths mean you don't have to bathe with others.

- 02

Children of primary-school age and younger aren't accepted, according to the inn's booking-site FAQ (updated July 2026). Disliked foods can't be swapped, fully allergen-free and vegetarian meals aren't offered, and allergies must be declared when booking.
- 04
Kurokawa's lanes are narrow and the inn has 18 parking spaces. Snow tyres or chains may be needed in winter. Staff collect guests from the Kurokawa Onsen bus stop if you give your arrival time in advance, and they drive annex guests to and from the main building.
- 05
The inn is operating normally: booking-site reviews cover stays from 29 July to 22 October 2026, and one guest stayed just after the Kumamoto earthquake in July 2026. It closes for maintenance for a few days a year (14–15 January and 22–25 June 2026), and its direct-booking allocation of the 'Kyushu Fukkō-wari' travel discount had sold out by 20 September 2026.
