Ten detached villas on a forested hill above Kurokawa, each with its own free-flowing onsen bath, some as big as a small public bath. Bloggers rave about it, but prices have climbed steeply and a few 2025 reviews flag upkeep, dinner and service slips
Gekkoju opened in 2016 on a forested hillside above Kurokawa Onsen: 4,500 tsubo (about 1.5 hectares) of oak, maple and bamboo with just eight detached villas, joined in June 2026 by two larger sauna villas, Tsukisae and Gyokurin, after construction that began in August 2025. Each villa has its own layout and theme, usually an irori hearth room where meals are served, a tatami room and a bedroom with two semi-doubles, plus an indoor bath and an open-air bath, all filled with free-flowing spring water. In Izayoi and Kagetsu the two run together into one bath that a 2022 blogger said would put many public baths to shame. Guests can also book two free private baths: Tenkū, at the top of the hill with a 360° view, and a steamy cave bath. Japanese guests rate it 4.52 across 47 reviews on one leading site, with baths at 4.79 and food lowest at 4.32. Bloggers who stayed in 2022, 2024 and 2025 rave about it: huge pool-like tubs, sunsets and stars from the bath, the inn's own lantern-lit night walk, free soft drinks and dinners so big the leftover rice comes back as rice balls for later. Criticism is rarer but real. In October 2025 two guests reported moss on a bath door, a dead outdoor bulb, strong-smelling meat and fish, a smoky dinner room and a poor response to complaints. A July 2026 returnee felt the new owners put profit first, and summer brings insects. Now part of the Shin Nihon Hotels group, it charges from about ¥183,000 for two with two meals in autumn 2026, against the nearly ¥130,000 a 2022 guest paid.

Izayoi (十六夜, 95㎡) and Kagetsu (佳月, 99㎡), the villas with joined indoor and outdoor baths
In both, big sliding doors open the indoor bath straight onto the open-air bath. A 2022 blogger and a June 2025 blogger who stayed in Izayoi both found the bath far bigger than any room bath they expected. Izayoi, built around huge beams moved from an old wooden house, is the most popular villa, according to one blogger; the inn removed the foot bath under its irori table in September 2026 after a leak. Kagetsu is the highest villa, with a moon-viewing deck and the Tenkū bath next door, and cost nearly ¥200,000 for a December 2024 stay. Its irori room is open to the living room, though, so staff serving meals can see in, and the stairs up to the balcony are steep.
Yumemi (夢見, 98㎡) and Kazemachi (風待, 99㎡), for the view from the living room
A solo traveller who stayed in Yumemi in December 2025 (about ¥150,000) called it an underrated gem. It has a glass-fronted living room facing a circular open-air bath big enough for ten, sunsets over the mountains, a separate indoor bath that stays warm in winter, and a two-mat tea room. The catches: a deep rock-lined gap has to be crossed to reach the bedroom, and the only phone is in the bedroom. Kazemachi, the mid-slope 'sea of clouds' villa, frames the Aso mountains from the entrance and drew top marks in February and August 2026, though a July 2026 repeat guest there was disappointed.
Tsukisae (月冴, 165㎡) and Gyokurin (玉輪, 177㎡), the sauna villas opened in June 2026
The newest and largest villas, each with an open-air bath, an indoor bath and a sauna; Tsukisae also has a cold plunge. A guest upgraded to Gyokurin in June 2026 described a garden barrel sauna, cold bath and lounger facing the valley, a dining room with its own small kitchen so dishes arrive hot, free sparkling wine and local beer served in Riedel glasses, and light Imabari bathrobes. The inn sold them first on its official site.

Tenshin (天心, 88㎡) and Ariake (有明, 82㎡), the entry-level villas
The cheapest options (from about ¥183,000 and ¥197,000 for two with two meals in October 2026) and among the smallest. Tenshin, nearest the main building, is the only barrier-free villa, and a March 2026 family with a wheelchair user praised staff for setting out ramps. But an October 2025 party of three who paid over ¥200,000 there reported a smoky dinner, equipment that didn't match the room guide and an unhelpful reply to their complaints. In Ariake in July 2026, a guest was asked to leave the bath doors open at night, and insects poured in.

La cocina a fondo
Consenso sobre el desayuno
4.4/5Served at your irori at 8:00 or 9:00: salmon, bacon and sausage grilled over charcoal, glossy rice from the pot and Jersey-milk yogurt with fruit. Bloggers found it generous, with a two-gō pot of rice even for a solo guest, and the charcoal-grilled bacon worth seconds
Arrive close to 15:00, or drop in earlier to check in: private-bath slots are handed out in check-in order, and you choose dinner (18:00 or 19:00) and breakfast times at the same desk. Take an after-dinner walk to see the inn's own lantern display lighting up the slope. Fridge drinks are free and soft drinks are refilled at no charge. Expect a parting gift, such as meat miso or lemon cake.
Claves de la cena
4.3/5Kaiseki at the irori in your villa (some have a foot bath under the table) or at the Luna Piena restaurant. You choose the course when booking: the standard kaiseki, a shabu-shabu kaiseki with Kumamoto Waō beef and Higo black pork, or a fugu kaiseki. Bloggers in 2022–2025 had horse sashimi (with refills offered), charcoal-grilled akaushi and Bungo beef, tiger-puffer karaage, rice cooked in the pot and Ise-ebi red miso soup. A repeat guest in March 2026 looks forward to the Amakusa Daiō chicken soup every time, and an allergy was handled with substitute dishes. Portions are very large. Weak spots: a soba-wrapped-in-tilefish dish and a crab rice short on crab in December 2025, and in October 2025 reviews, strong smells and a smoky room.
Onsen y bienestar: la realidad
A weakly alkaline simple spring, according to the inn; the analysis a 2025 blogger photographed lists a simple spring at pH 7.0 and 56.1°C. The inn says every tub on the property, in the villas and the two private baths, is 100% free-flowing spring water. Bloggers found the in-room baths, which you switch on to keep the flow running, held at a hot 42–43°C or so.
Every villa has its own indoor bath and open-air bath on a terrace, usable at any time. The two new villas add saunas, with a cold plunge in Tsukisae and a barrel sauna in Gyokurin's garden. There is no large shared bath. Two private baths are free and booked at check-in, first come, first served. Tenkū is the open-air bath at the top of the hill, with a jacuzzi-type tub, no washing area, 40-minute slots and towels provided. The cave bath is reached down a long tunnel. A December 2024 blogger found both lukewarm, and several bloggers found their own villa bath just as good. Kurokawa's bath-hopping pass (¥1,500 for three of 25 inn outdoor baths, 8:30–21:00, valid for six months) is for exploring the village; Gekkoju's baths aren't on it.
No policy found on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the inn. Every villa has its own onsen bath.

Check-in 15:00 (by 18:00 on booking-site plans), check-out 11:00. Cancellation: 30% from 7 days before, 50% from 3 days before, 100% on the day; if you arrive after 21:00, the inn may check with you and resell the room. Since June 2026 bookings open eight months ahead.

Getting there: it's a steep drive up from the village, not a walk. Pickup from the Kurokawa Onsen bus stop is free; tell the inn your arrival time by the day before. Staff park cars for you (10 spaces), low cars may struggle with the uneven approach, and at about 700m a December 2025 visitor hired winter tyres.
- 03
Children are welcome: junior-high age and up pay adult rates, ages 10–12 get a children's kaiseki, ages 2–9 a kids' plate, and under-2s bedding only. Tenshin is the only barrier-free villa; reaching the others involves a buggy ride, slopes and steps (wheelchairs can be borrowed).
- 04
A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto on 28 July 2026. The inn reported no significant damage and stayed open, and the Kyushu Expressway fully reopened on 14 August. A Kyushu recovery discount (60% off, up to ¥20,000 per person) covers stays from 1 October to 25 December 2026 while funds last. On the official site, one-night adults-only stays use a coupon code; longer stays and bookings with children go by phone.

In September 2026 the inn warned that its booking-system provider had been hacked and that guests were receiving fake messages by WhatsApp, email and SMS asking them to re-enter card details or pay urgently. Never pay through such links; contact the inn directly.
