Ryokan Wakaba

A friendly 16-room family inn with horse-sashimi kaiseki served in renovated rooms that have their own dining rooms, plus four detached rooms with free-flowing onsen baths. The shared baths are modest and close at 22:30
Wakaba started out as a sushi shop, and the current owners' predecessor turned it into a ryokan about 37 years ago, which makes it one of Kurokawa's younger inns. It has 16 rooms: nine in the main building, three two-room suites in a separate annex and four detached rooms whose own baths are filled with free-flowing spring water. In 2023–24, seven main-building rooms were renovated with a dining room next to the bedroom and a separate door for staff, so dinner comes to you in private. The staff are the main draw. On one major Japanese booking site, guests rate service 4.9 and the inn 4.7 overall across 436 reviews. On another it scores 4.54 across 698, with hospitality at 4.72. Reviews and blogs from 2024 to 2026 mention a phone call before arrival, a pickup from the bus stop in the rain, handwritten tips on the breakfast menu and a birthday plate with a printed photo. The kaiseki is built around Kumamoto horse sashimi, local beef and river fish, and it draws steady praise. The baths are a weakly acidic simple spring, with a women-only outdoor bath and two private baths. One 2025 blogger found them pleasant rather than memorable. Day visitors share them, and they close at 22:30. Complaints from 2026 include dinners some found heavy, salty or garlicky, a musty changing room, ants in a private bath after heavy rain, weak Wi-Fi in the annex, a guest left to carry luggage downstairs and a narrow access road. Two-meal stays cost about ¥24,000–30,000 or more per person.

Renovated main-building rooms (Japanese-Western, reopened in 2024) with a private dining room
Seven rooms were redone in 2023–24 with beds, a mini-kitchen and a separate dining room next to the bedroom. Staff use their own door, and the door to the bedroom locks from your side. A couple who returned in April 2025 after 20 years found them 'retro but new', and a July 2026 blogger found the rooms newer and cleaner than expected. Both meals are served in the room, which a 2025 solo traveller and a 2024 family with a small child both appreciated. Depending on type, these rooms sleep two to six.
The four hanare (detached) rooms with a free-flowing onsen bath
There are two Japanese-Western rooms (twin beds, terrace, dinner in the room, up to two guests) and two 10-mat Japanese rooms with a veranda (up to four guests, dinner in the dining room). Each has its own indoor bath of free-flowing spring water. A spring 2026 blogging couple skipped the shared baths and used theirs, calling it 'far more luxurious than the room rate suggested'. These rooms go first: a 2025 guest couldn't get one at Golden Week.

Annex (bekkan) two-room Japanese suites (8 + 6 tatami)
They suit families and groups of up to seven, but they're in a separate building reached by a roofed path outside the main house, and meals are taken in the dining hall. Guests in 2026 reported Wi-Fi that barely reached (September), river noise at night and a spider's web hanging from the ceiling (May). A September 2026 guest in a main-building room also found the TV awkwardly placed.

La cocina a fondo
Consenso sobre el desayuno
4.4/5A Japanese breakfast built on Oguni vegetables and local produce, with a tofu hot pot, fish, egg, miso soup and rice. It's served in your room or the dining hall and is consistently praised as generous and comforting
Mention your plans for the next day at dinner: several guests found handwritten sightseeing tips on their breakfast menu. Staying guests get one free use of a private bath (reservation required), and the front desk sells Kurokawa's ¥1,500 bath-hopping pass. Drivers: car navigation and Google Maps send you to the neighbouring inn, so the official site says to phone from near the Cosmo petrol station.
Claves de la cena
4.3/5A seasonal kaiseki of about a dozen courses. It's served in your room in the main building and the Japanese-Western detached rooms, and in the dining room (with irori hearths in the annex's dining area) for everyone else. Regular dishes include Kumamoto horse sashimi (swapped for roast beef or chicken tataki with notice), Ajisai beef grilled on a ceramic plate, and rainbow trout or salt-grilled yamame. There are playful touches too, like cream cheese and a kinpira tart (January 2026). Paid upgrades add Aso akaushi steak, more horse sashimi or horse-meat sushi. Criticism from 2026: too heavy by the end, a little salty, too much garlic and gochujang, and too few dishes for the price (March).
Onsen y bienestar: la realidad
A weakly acidic simple spring (hypotonic, 63.6°C at source) high in metasilicic acid, according to the inn's posted analysis. The official site and a 2025 trade-press profile say the detached rooms' in-room baths are free-flowing (gensen kakenagashi). The site doesn't say whether the shared baths are free-flowing, recirculated or heated.
There are gender-separated indoor baths and riverside outdoor baths: the women's Keshō no Yu, said to leave skin soft, and an outdoor bath with a reclining 'sleeping bath' at the back, pictured on the men's side. Two private baths can be reserved: Kajika no Yu has the larger tub, and Hotaru no Yu has an octagonal tub and a slightly roomier washing area. Day visitors also use the baths, and the shared baths close for cleaning from 22:30 to 6:30. Guests love the sound of the river. However, a 2025 blogger found the baths less striking than others in Kurokawa, a March 2026 guest was bothered by loud bathers, and a guest in November 2025 found the bath area cold.
No policy found on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the inn. The private baths and the detached rooms' own baths make sharing unnecessary.
Advertencias y matices locales
- 01
Check-in 15:00–17:00, check-out 10:00 (an early-departure plan checks out at 9:00). The inn says booking on its own site or by phone gets the lowest rate.
- 02
On 6 October 2026 the inn warned that its reservation system (Temairazu) had been hacked. Some guests who booked by 21 September 2026 for stays from that date have received fake messages. Don't click links or pay anything; confirm bookings by phone.
- 03
The access road is narrow and the inn is on a slope. Staff picked up a 2025 solo traveller from the nearby bus stop in the rain, so ask ahead if you're arriving by bus.
- 04
A 2026 guest in a second-floor room had to carry luggage down to the entrance alone, so ask staff for help if you need it.
- 05
Children are welcome: there are children's dinner sets, and family rooms sleep up to six (main building) or seven (annex).
