Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

Seven baths from two private springs in the forest outside Kurokawa — beloved for its water and warmth, and now with no mixed bath; pack layers in winter

Sanga sits in woodland about five minutes by car from the centre of Kurokawa Onsen, and Japanese guests keep returning for its baths: seven bathing spots fed by two of the inn's own springs, running as free-flowing hot water. Reviewers single out the gently sulfurous indoor 'Yakushi-no-yu' and the large, pale-green open-air 'Moyai-no-yu' — which the inn now lists as a men-only bath, with 'Shiki-no-yu' for women, so there is no longer a mixed bath — and make good use of the private baths, especially the half-open 'Rokushaku-oke', a giant wooden tub. The inn scores 4.7 on Jalan (505 reviews), 4.64 on Rakuten and 4.60 on Ikyu, and the praise for staff is unusually personal: one guest compared the stay to visiting relatives, another watched an attendant map out the best onsen-hopping route, and recent guests describe staff meeting cars on arrival and driving guests into the village for the evening Yuakari illumination. Dinner is a multi-course kaiseki of Aso produce that most loved, but the inn's 2026 menus reserve horse sashimi and Aso beef for direct bookings and rooms with their own bath. The recurring complaints in 2025–26 are practical: open-air corridors and changing rooms make winter stays cold, amenities are basic, some rooms feel dated and the paths to the baths are dark at night.

Guía para elegir habitación

Recomendadas

  • Detached cottages (e.g. Nemunoki, Natsutsubaki)

The inn's sixteen rooms include detached cottages and rooms with their own bath; one 2018 guest noted the premium rooms have an attached stone bath. If privacy matters, these are the rooms to ask for.

  • Main-building rooms without a bath (e.g. Akashide)

The value option: a 2018 guest on the second floor of the main building had no in-room bath but never missed it, using the private baths — Rokushaku-oke and the hinoki bath — instead.

Mejor evitar

  • Any room in winter, and for guests with limited mobility

The corridors to the baths and the bath changing rooms are open to the air, and five reviews from December 2025 to March 2026 found the stay cold; a few recent guests also found rooms dated and amenities basic. The paths have no handrails and the inn is not wheelchair-accessible, so ask before booking if stairs or slopes are a problem.

La cocina a fondo

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.3/5

A Japanese breakfast that guests describe as a well-judged size, with everything tasty

Ask your room attendant for an onsen-hopping route through Kurokawa — reviewers credit staff with excellent local advice — and allow time to drive: the inn is a few minutes by car from the main onsen street, on narrow village roads.

Claves de la cena

4.3/5

Kaiseki of Aso and Oguni ingredients, served in a semi-private dining area; solo guests have been served dinner in their room. Guests describe salt-grilled yamame trout, tempura and as many as eleven courses, and most came away delighted with the generous portions. What you get depends on how you booked: the inn's spring and autumn 2026 menus serve horse sashimi and an Aso beef hoba-yaki only to guests who booked through the official site or stay in a room with its own bath; everyone else gets sea bream and amberjack sashimi and a seafood dempo-yaki instead, and two 2026 reviews from standard rooms confirm there was no meat dish. Book direct if the Aso beef matters to you. A minority of reviews on one Japanese site found the food dull, not freshly prepared or more about decoration than substance.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

Free-flowing hot-spring water from two of the inn's own sources: a simple sulfur spring with a faint sulfur smell guests love, and a pale-green chloride spring that fills the open-air Moyai-no-yu. The indoor 'Yakushi-no-yu' (a hinoki tub on the women's side, a rock tub on the men's) uses a blend of both.

Privacidad y ambiente

Seven bathing spots in all, now fully gender-separated: the men-only open-air Moyai-no-yu, the women-only open-air Shiki-no-yu, the indoor Yakushi-no-yu for each gender, and three private baths — the semi-open wooden-tub Rokushaku-oke (7:30–22:00) and the hinoki and kiriishi stone baths (6:00–midnight). Private baths are booked at check-in on the day, not in advance. The outdoor baths have no washing area, so wash indoors first. Reviewers praise how clean the baths are kept; one found an outdoor bath a little lukewarm, and recent guests note the paths to the baths are dark at night.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Location: about five minutes by car from Kurokawa's main street, at the western edge of the village down a steep, narrow road — quieter than inns in the centre, but not a stroll to the other baths.

  2. 02

Getting there by car takes roughly 90–120 minutes (about 65 km) from Kumamoto Airport.

  3. 03

Day visitors (¥600, 8:30–21:00) also use the open-air baths, so timing matters: one reviewer had the forest bath to themselves at 11am.

  4. 04

It books up: one guest secured a room only through the inn's own website, which also has an English booking system.

  5. 05

Price: 2026 standard plans on Jalan run about ¥23,000–30,000 or more per adult with two meals.

  6. 06

Check-in 15:00, check-out 10:00. The inn offers free pickup from the Kurokawa Onsen, Oguni Yu-Station and Tsuetate bus stops.

  7. 07

Winter is cold here: open-air corridors and changing rooms drew repeated complaints from December to March, so bring warm layers.

  8. 08

After the Kumamoto earthquake of 28 July 2026 the inn reported no major damage and normal operation, and it waives cancellation fees if your transport is cancelled.
