Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

A 1950s riverside inn with river views from almost every room, a rock open-air bath right above the Kinugawa gorge and its own path down to the riverbank — good-value kaiseki, but an ageing building, musty smells and patchy cleaning

Matsuya is a seven-storey, 47-room Japanese inn on the gorge at the quiet north end of Kinugawa Onsen, run by the same company since 1957 (its listed founding date). Nearly every room faces the river, and the hallways are filled with Takehisa Yumeji prints and antique dolls which a 2026 reviewer was told belong to the okami — charming to some guests, 'a little creepy' at night to others. Bloggers who stayed in 2024 and 2025 and dozens of 2026 reviewers agree on the highlights: a rock-built open-air bath with no buildings opposite, just trees and the river below; a garden you can walk down to the water's edge, which they describe as unique in Kinugawa; and a plated kaiseki dinner (not a buffet) with Tochigi pork or beef sukiyaki and rice cooked in a pot at the table, at prices often around ¥20,000 per person. Japanese guests rate it 3.96 across 1,412 reviews on one major site and 3.9 across 943 on another, with the baths the top category on both and cleanliness and facilities the lowest. The recurring complaints are the building: musty or incense-like smells in corridors, dust on air-conditioners, worn shoji and tatami, insects (it sits in a forested gorge), weak Wi-Fi and mobile signal, and a car park some distance away. Opinions on dinner split between 'beautiful and more than enough' and 'small and served cold'. Most reviewers find the front-of-house and dining staff warm; a few find service mechanical. Note that the shared baths are recirculated, filtered and heated.

Recomendadas

  • Japanese room with open-air bath and private garden (Japanese room 10 tatami + garden)

Each has its own small garden overlooking the river and an outdoor tub filled with hot-spring water. A 2026 guest found the round ceramic tub 'much bigger than it looks' and soaked in it again and again; a 2026 family said you need a knack to get the temperature right, and one winter guest found it cold and slow to warm up. Expect from about ¥30,000 per person (two sharing) for the modern open-air-bath room on the official site.

  • Twin beds + 10-tatami river-view room (renovated August 2026) or a modern Japanese-Western room

The newest rooms: the twin-bed river-view rooms were renovated in August 2026, and a May 2026 repeat guest in a renovated room with beds called it 'so clean' and was surprised to be able to watch the river from its bath. From about ¥19,800 per person (two sharing) on the official site.

  • Upper-floor 10-tatami river-view room (e.g. 7th floor)

The value choice, from about ¥16,800 per person (two sharing) on the official site. Guests on the 7th floor in 2026 praised the view straight down to the river, and a 2024 blogger in a corner room had windows on two sides plus a bath and toilet in the room.

  • 'Room left to the inn' (おまかせ) discount plans

The cheapest last-minute plans don't let you choose: a September 2025 blogger got a 4th-floor 10-tatami room with a river view but no bathroom — just a washbasin and toilet — and cobwebs between the shoji and the window. Reviewers in 2026 also mention worn tatami, peeling wallpaper, dusty air-conditioner vents, windows that won't open and in-room smells; one honeymoon couple in August 2026 rated the whole stay 1 out of 5.

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.0/5

A classic onsen-inn breakfast in the dining hall from 7:30: tofu simmered at the table, salmon cooked from raw on a ceramic grill, an onsen egg, Tochigi natto and pickles, and Tochigi Koshihikari rice in a wooden tub with refills — rated 4.0–4.1 on two sites

Free welcome drinks are served in the lounge until 17:00 (from 14:30 per the official site, 14:00 per one blogger), and morning coffee from 8:30 to 10:00. Pick your yukata at the front desk before going up — rooms have only the sash. Breakfast starts at 7:30: two families in 2026 were told 7:00 and found the room still shut.

Claves de la cena

3.9/5

Plated kaiseki, served course by course in the 4th-floor Kagetsutei dining hall, which is split into separate rooms — many 2026 guests ate in a fully private room, others in shared rooms. There are three levels: the 'Petit' kaiseki (about seven dishes) and the Standard, both with a sukiyaki of Tochigi 'Yume' pork, and 'Chokotto Zeitaku', with Tochigi Kirifuri-kōgen beef sukiyaki. A September 2025 blogger on the cheapest plan had seasonal snapper and tuna sashimi, a chawanmushi full of Nikkō yuba, and sweetcorn rice cooked in an iron pot at the table and finished with butter, and found it surprisingly seasonal for the price. Many 2026 reviewers say the pot-cooked rice is the star and call it great value. Others found the portions small (several say big eaters will want more; one reviewer's partner ate a cup noodle in the room later), dishes laid out too early and cold, and the halls so silent that you hear every word at the next table. Local sake from Tochigi breweries, including a Yumeji-label sake.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

Kinugawa Onsen's weakly alkaline simple spring — clear, odourless and soft. The inn states that its baths use added water, heating and recirculation with filtration, so they are not free-flowing. A 2024 blogger, first in, noticed no chlorine smell. The tubs in the open-air-bath rooms are also filled with hot-spring water; one 2026 guest called theirs free-flowing, but the inn doesn't say so.

Privacidad y ambiente

Separate men's and women's baths on the 1st floor: tall, timber-beamed indoor baths with glass walls onto the gorge (Shōfū-no-yu and Yashio-no-yu), plus rock open-air baths over the river (Takimi-no-yu and Izayoi-no-yu), reached by a small bridge and only half roofed. Each side has a sauna; one blogger found no cold plunge on the women's side. Hours are 15:00–24:00 and 5:00–9:00. Bloggers praise the open-air bath for its unscreened view of trees and water, since there are no buildings on the far bank, and many 2026 guests had it to themselves. The complaints are about upkeep: in 2026 guests were kept out until about 15:20 while it was cleaned, found the open-air bath half-full or scalding, or saw algae or leaves floating, and in early 2026 the women's bath was closed on the day because its ceiling was at risk of falling. The cypress-wood private bath Tsukimachi-no-yu costs ¥3,300 for 45 minutes (up to 5 people; book by phone; 15:00–23:00 and 5:00–7:00). One 2026 family found its flow only a trickle.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

    Check-in 15:00 (last check-in 18:00–19:00 depending on the page), check-out 10:00. Dinner starts at about 17:30–18:00.

  2. 02

Parking is free (80 spaces) but mostly in a separate lot near the station: drop your bags at the entrance and staff will drive you back from the car park. One 2026 driver wasn't told about the separate lot in advance.

  3. 03

All rooms are non-smoking; there's an outdoor smoking area. Mobile signal and Wi-Fi are weak in parts of the building — the front desk lends pocket Wi-Fi.

  4. 04

There's almost nothing around Kinugawa-Kōen Station — no convenience store. Inside there's a shop, a 24-hour frozen-food vending corner with a microwave, and the Haikara-san karaoke bar (20:00–23:00).

  5. 05

It's an old building in a wooded gorge: expect insects (2026 guests found beetles, flies and centipedes in their rooms) and, in some guests' words, a musty or incense-like smell in the corridors. The halls are full of dolls and Yumeji art.
