Kachoan's larger, cheaper sister by the red Nakabashi bridge: a taiko drum to greet you, names remembered and Hida-beef kaiseki in private dining rooms — but the rooms are plain, none of the in-room baths is described as onsen, and women get no open-air bath
Honjin Hiranoya Kofukan, called Honjin Hiranoya Bekkan (the 'annex') until April 2026, is the larger, more affordable sister of Kachoan across the road: a seven-storey, 28-room inn at the foot of Takayama's red Nakabashi bridge, a minute from Takayama Jinya. It shares Kachoan's style of service: free pickup from the station whenever you arrive, your car parked for as long as you like, a taiko drum on arrival (a May 2026 guest who first stayed 40 years ago said it hadn't changed), staff who use your name and, often, a surprise for birthdays. In 2022 it came first in Jalan's Gifu ranking for inns of 50 rooms or fewer. Scores are high: 4.8 across 1,924 reviews on Jalan (service 4.9, baths 4.3) and 4.67 across 1,403 on Rakuten Travel (breakfast and dinner 4.72, baths 4.41). Personal blogs since 2022 are scarce, so most recent evidence comes from booking-site reviews; a family who stayed in January 2024 loved the window view over the town and bridge, the Hida beef and the hōba miso at breakfast. Dinner is a monthly kaiseki built around Hida-beef teppanyaki, served in private dining rooms that opened in 2023. Know before you book: rooms are simple, with ordinary bathrooms; the shared onsen is on the seventh floor, and women have no open-air bath — instead they get an indoor bath upstairs and the Relax Kura storehouse bath in a separate building. Complaints from 2025–2026 include a cluttered feel, a single lift, a crowded front desk at 15:00, courses mistimed when staff seemed busy, and food and rooms plainer than before for the price. A new sister inn is going up next door. Official rates start at ¥18,700 per person with two meals (about ¥37,400 for two); most reviewers paid ¥22,000–30,000 or more per person.

River-view Japanese rooms (10 or 12 tatami mats), ideally on an upper floor
24 rooms look over the Miyagawa river and the red Nakabashi bridge; the 12-mat type has a separate bath and toilet, and both sleep two to five, from ¥20,900 (10 mats) or ¥23,100 (12 mats) per person with two meals. A February 2025 guest called the view of the river and bridge from the room superb, a January 2026 guest was moved to the river side when a room came free, and reviewers on the top floor in December 2025 and February 2026 praised the view. The January 2024 blogger looked down on the town and the bridge, lit up at night. Rooms show their age — 'nothing new', a September 2026 family wrote — but reviewers consistently find them clean.
River-view Western twin (renewed autumn 2021) or the Jinya-view twin (summer 2024)
The river-view twin is a corner room with France Bed electric reclining beds that fold up like a sofa, from ¥23,100 per person; a May 2026 guest whose friend fell ill said the bed let them rest properly, and a returning guest the same month enjoyed the reclining bed and the view along the Miyagawa. The compact Jinya-view twin, converted from a town-side Japanese room, looks down on Takayama Jinya and its morning market and has a tiled bathroom with a Shigaraki-ware tub, from ¥28,600 per person. One June 2026 guest in a river-view twin found the building cluttered and was disappointed there was no coffee.

Town-side 10-mat Japanese rooms — and anyone counting on a view or an onsen bath in the room
The cheapest rooms (from ¥18,700 per person, for one or two people) face the shopping street rather than the river; a February 2025 guest called theirs small but clean. A February 2026 reviewer who had hoped for a view saw little from the window, so ask for the river side or a high floor. In-room bathrooms are ordinary baths, and none is described as onsen. Other notes: the corridors in the guest wing felt a little hot (March 2026), and in heavy rain the river is loud at night (May 2024). There's only one lift (December 2025).

Consenso sobre el desayuno
4.6/5Japanese or Western, chosen on arrival and served in a private dining room: the Japanese set has freshly made tofu, hōba miso, dashimaki omelette, overnight-dried iwana and miso soup in a clay pot; the Western set has fresh-baked bread, scrambled eggs, sausage and salad. Rice and bread are refilled free (February 2026). Widely praised — a March 2026 repeat guest recommends the Western set, and a January 2025 reviewer counted eight small side dishes
Call ahead for the free pickup from JR Takayama Station or the bus centre; bags and cars are held before check-in and after check-out, so you can arrive in the morning and explore. The Jinya morning market is a minute away — go before breakfast. Booking on the official site takes 5% off every plan. The Nakabashi bridge is lit up four times a year and can be seen from the lobby terrace. Women can rent one of more than 800 coloured yukata at the Kura (¥1,100); children can borrow a free sarubobo costume. Hang the door tag to keep your futon down after breakfast.
Claves de la cena
4.6/5A monthly kaiseki whose main is Hida-beef teppanyaki, served in Matsuri Bayashi — 20 private dining rooms opened in March 2023, each named after a Takayama Festival float and fitted with Hida furniture and Hida-zome dyed fabrics. The most popular upgrade is the Hida-beef-only course (nine dishes, 200 g of beef); extras include Hida beef grilled on hōba miso, tsukemono steak and Hida-beef nigiri from the group's Sushi-chō. A May 2026 dinner featured Hida beef on a ceramic grill, five kinds of sashimi, a fish-ball soup and salmon in Saikyō miso. Reviewers praise the gentle seasoning, unusual for a mountain town (February 2025), and A5 Hida beef (January 2025). Criticisms: that January 2025 reviewer suspected some starters were bought in, a December 2025 guest found the food plainer than on an earlier visit and a ¥660 ice cream overpriced, a December 2025 repeat guest felt the timing of courses slipped when staff seemed busy, and a March 2026 solo diner's plates were almost cleared while they fetched a coffee. The inn says it adapts dishes for allergies as far as it can.
Onsen y bienestar: la realidad
Takayama Onsen, a weakly alkaline simple spring. Jalan lists it as having water added and heated; neither the inn nor the booking sites say whether it is recirculated. The in-room bathrooms are listed simply as 'bath and toilet', and none is described as onsen.
On the seventh floor, Tsukiakari-no-yu (men) and Kirara-no-yu (women) are indoor baths looking out towards the cherry trees along the Miyagawa, Shiroyama hill and the Hida mountains (5:00–9:00 and 15:00–24:00); Kachoan's guests use them too. Men also get Relax Manten, an open-air bath with a sauna (sauna 15:00–21:00). Women instead have Relax Kura, an old storehouse bath in a separate building with a small garden, an irori lounge, herbal tea and a full set of skincare (6:00–10:00 and 15:00–23:00; no children of primary-school age or younger). Towels are stocked at every bath. No private (kashikiri) baths and no open-air bath for women. The January 2024 blogger's family had the Kura to themselves and found it roomy, with a ReFa shower head. Reviewers call the baths small but clean; complaints include water that could be hotter (November 2025), a cold washing area in the Kura in winter and a gecko dropping from above (December 2025), and a Kura lotion that seemed to contain alcohol and irritated one guest's skin (May 2026).

- 01
Check-in 15:00 (last arrival 18:00), check-out 10:00 — an hour earlier than Kachoan. Curfew at midnight. Cancellation: 20% from 2–5 days before, 50% the day before, 100% on the day; bookings of three or more rooms or 10 or more people need a deposit.
- 02
Renamed in April 2026: older listings, reviews and Agoda may still say Honjin Hiranoya Bekkan or 'Annex'. Don't confuse it with Kachoan across the road (pricier, with its own baths and suites) or with the new sister inn being built next door, which reviewers say should open around winter 2026 — ask whether your room faces the site.
- 03
Women walk outside, in yukata, to reach the Relax Kura bath — a February 2026 guest found that a bother — and mothers with children of primary-school age or younger can only use the small seventh-floor indoor bath. A May 2025 reviewer wished there were more bathing options for women and children.
- 04
The official site says dinner is served in the private dining rooms, which have 19 table-and-chair rooms and one tatami room, but Rakuten lists in-room dinner as an option and a February 2026 family ate dinner in their room — confirm when booking. Breakfast runs 7:00–9:30 and dinner 18:00–21:00; groups of seven or more may be given the Japanese breakfast.
- 05
Children and babies are welcome, with cots, bouncers, high chairs, pushchairs and potty seats lent free (bring your own baby food, formula and nappies); children without meals or bedding pay a ¥2,200 facility fee. Parking is free for 50 cars, and staff park your car for you.
