Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

A 34th-generation family inn that once kept the Date lords' bathhouse, with a thatched riverside bath and a free-flowing-drinks half-buffet — strong on food and history, tired in the older rooms

Sakan's family traces its role as keepers of Akiu's hot spring back to the Heian period and served as bath-keepers to the Date lords; the current owner is the 34th generation, a flame said to have come from Mount Kōya has burned in the inn for 400 years, and G7 meetings were held here in 2016 and 2023. Today it's a 173-room ryokan in three buildings, known in English as Hotel Sakan. Japanese guests rate it 4.42 across 1,898 reviews on one major site and 4.3 across 1,978 on another, with food and baths high and rooms lowest. The star dinner is a half-buffet: starter and sashimi at the table, a choice of meat (beef tongue, steak) and fish mains, a live kitchen for tempura and soba, and free-flowing drinks including local sake; breakfast adds a truffle omelette and sea-bream ramen. The bathing highlight is Kawara-no-yu, a small thatched riverside bath that is the inn's free-flowing tub — the large indoor baths are recirculated and chlorinated — but women can use it only 15:00–23:00. The recurring complaints: dated rooms in the Kagetsu building (stains, a sewage smell, mould and ceiling leak marks in 2026), queues at the buffet stations and breakfast, guests moved to a banquet hall when it's busy, brusque staff, and a car park 100m away. Most 2026 reviewers paid over ¥30,000 per person with two meals.

Recomendadas

  • Hiten building (飛天館) — river-view rooms and upper floors

The top-grade 13-floor building, with Japanese-Western rooms facing the Natori river, suites with marble baths, special rooms on the 13th floor and a rooftop-garden room with a hinoki bath. Guests rate the rooms and views best here — 'next time I'll only stay in Hiten', one wrote. One January 2026 guest found its central air conditioning left the room cold at night. Note that room 333's open-air bath is officially not onsen water.

  • Sansui building (山翠館) Japanese rooms

Six floors of 10–12.5-mat rooms that a September 2026 guest found 'very spacious and clean', with the scent of fresh tatami — but the inn itself says the views face the courtyard or the town, not the river or mountains.

Mejor evitar

  • Older Kagetsu building (花月館) rooms

The most affordable building, with a direct lift to the large baths, but it draws most of the 2025–2026 complaints: 'rooms unchanged from the old days and in need of renovation', tatami stains, sticking doors and stiff keys, a strong sewage smell, and in August 2026 ceiling leak marks and mould in the yukata storage. Upstairs footsteps carry, and in-room amenities are minimal.

The 'Premium Morning' buffet — truffle omelette, sea-bream ramen, croissants baked at 8:00 — though it gets very crowded

Book the free Sendai shuttle online in advance (it fills, and phone bookings aren't accepted). Women who want the thatched Kawara-no-yu should go on the evening of arrival — it's women's time only 15:00–23:00. The barrier-free private bath (free-flowing, ¥2,000 plus tax for 40 minutes) is bookable 16:00–22:00.

Most plans get the half-buffet at the Miyagino dining room: a starter and sashimi brought to the table, a choice of meat and fish mains, a live kitchen for tempura, duck soba, mini seafood bowls and yakitori, and free-flowing drinks including local sake such as Hakurakusei. Private-room kaiseki is the alternative. Complaints: long queues at the live-kitchen stations so plated mains go cold, lukewarm tempura, individual guests moved to a banquet hall on busy nights, and private-room kaiseki that felt pre-plated.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

A sodium chloride spring (about 55°C, weakly alkaline, colourless). An older official bath sign showed the indoor baths recirculated, heated and chlorinated and Kawara-no-yu completely free-flowing; the inn still names only Kawara-no-yu and the private bath as free-flowing, and a 2025 guest noticed chlorine in the large baths.

Privacidad y ambiente

Two large bath halls in the Kagetsu building (the ground-floor one renovated in 2023 with a deep tub, silk bath and saunas) swap between men and women in the evening; the Natori-no-ohyu recreates Date Masamune's bathing pavilion with hinoki and granite; and the thatched Kawara-no-yu by the river holds about 10 (men 5:00–11:00, women 15:00–23:00). Guests praise the ReFa showers and dryers, but report queues for the washing stations.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Getting there: free shuttle from Sendai Station's east exit (11:00 and 15:30; online booking required), about 30 minutes by taxi, or the Miyagi Kōtsū bus to Akiu Onsen Yumoto (40–60 minutes).

  2. 02

Check-in 15:00, check-out 11:00. Front-desk information on dinner times has been inconsistent; last dinner entry is 19:00.

  3. 03

The car park is about 100m from the entrance and its exit onto the road has poor visibility.

  4. 04

Service gets mixed marks: brusque staff, guests carrying their own luggage, and a wrong drink served to a child.

  5. 05

A large inn of 173 rooms — expect tour groups and busy buffets at weekends and holidays.
