Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

A 21-room inn tied to the poet Saitō Mokichi, with its own unwatered, unheated pH 1.8 sulphur spring, two free private baths and Yamagata-beef kaiseki in private dining rooms — the building itself is newer and some fittings are tired

Wakamatsuya traces its founding to 1655 and calls itself the inn of Saitō Mokichi (1882–1953), the Yamagata-born tanka poet who was related to the owners' family and often stayed; Mokichi's own calligraphy hangs in a small gallery, and guests are handed paper strips to write their own poems, which line the corridors. The inn has since moved into a newer building, so the history is in the displays rather than the architecture. The draw is the water: the inn's own strongly acidic sulphur spring (pH 1.8), which the inn says reaches the baths with no added water, no heating and no recirculation. There's a shared indoor bath, two outdoor tubs including one carved from an 18-tonne Zao boulder, and two private family baths that are free, unbookable and open 24 hours. Japanese guests rate it 4.75 across 832 reviews on one major site (service 4.78, dinner 4.68) and 4.8 across 1,144 on another; most of the recent evidence comes from these booking-site reviews, backed by two first-hand blogs from 2022 and 2025. They praise the warm staff, kaiseki served in private rooms, and a lounge with free drinks, bottled milk and handmade sweets all day. The complaints, mostly from 2024–2026: dinners some find unremarkable or slow-paced, a sparse breakfast, a cramped changing room and weak showers, central air conditioning that can't be adjusted, a burst pipe that left one March 2025 guest without water, and a leaking air-conditioner in a suite in September 2026. Standard two-meal plans run about ¥26,000–35,000 per person.

Guía para elegir habitación

Recomendadas

  • Private Dining Japanese-Western rooms (Asebi 馬酔木 and Okinagusa 翁草, 2F)

The only rooms where both meals are served in your own room — a separate 10-tatami dining room next to a 10–18-tatami main room with Simmons beds, for up to four. A September 2026 family travelling with someone who finds walking hard said having the dining room next door made the stay much easier.

  • Corner 15-tatami Japanese-Western rooms (Tachibana and Shakkō, 3F/4F)

Two roomy corner rooms with beds and a view toward Kaminoyama, Mokichi's hometown; the inn recommends them for older guests. The modern 10-tatami Japanese-Western rooms are adults-only and popular with solo travellers, and the plain 10–18-tatami Japanese rooms are allocated by group size.

Mejor evitar

  • The top-floor suites Tsukikage (83㎡) and Akatsuki (57㎡), opened August 2024

Their semi-open-air baths are not onsen — the inn says they use ordinary water, and the spring is only in the shared and private baths downstairs. A May 2026 honeymoon couple paid a premium for the suite but found its bath too hot to use; in September 2026 another suite guest found the changing-room floor soaked and water dripping from the air conditioner. Elsewhere, a 2023 guest noted stained tatami and walls in an older Japanese room, and a 2025 guest found an old toilet seat.

La cocina a fondo

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.3/5

A Japanese set breakfast in a private room (7:30, 8:00 or 8:30) with Tsuyahime rice, a fu-and-vegetable hotpot, local side dishes and a choice of fruit or vegetable smoothie — mostly praised for its variety, though an October 2026 guest found it sparse and a May 2026 guest felt awkward asking for more rice in a private room

Book on the official site to check in from 14:00 (not all plans). Use the free family baths when they're free — there are two, with no booking and a 40-minute guideline. The lobby lounge serves free drinks and homemade puddings, and late-night soba appears some evenings; you can take drinks to your room, but outside drinks aren't allowed in the dining rooms except bottles with a corkage fee. Free pick-up from the bus terminal and to the ropeways during operating hours.

Claves de la cena

4.4/5

'Yamagata Shun-tsuzuri' kaiseki in private or semi-private dining rooms at 18:00 or 18:30, with grilled, fried and steamed dishes cooked once you sit down. Plans range from the standard menu with Yamagata beef to an A5 Yamagata-beef steak upgrade, a smaller 'quality' menu for light eaters and a chef's Yonezawa-beef menu; from autumn to spring there's a safflower-chicken hotpot. A 2022 blogger singled out the imoni stew and a closing eel rice in honour of Mokichi. Critics in 2024–2026 found dinner lacking impact, the small-portion plan over too quickly, and long gaps between courses.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

The inn's own strongly acidic sulphur spring (acidic, sulphur-aluminium-sulphate-chloride type; pH 1.8 on the posted analysis), piped from the source. The inn states it is 100% free-flowing with no added water, heating or recirculation; temperature is controlled only by the flow rate, so it varies by day. In-room baths use tap water, not onsen.

Privacidad y ambiente

Separate men's and women's baths, open 24 hours with no swap: an indoor bath with about five washing stations, a rectangular outdoor tub and a hotter tub carved from an 18-tonne Zao stone. Two private family baths, Sanpō and Fubō, are free and unbookable — lock the door if empty — and fill up at busy times. Guests praise the milky, skin-softening water but some mention a narrow changing room, weak, lukewarm showers, a low-flowing indoor bath and a family bath too hot for a three-year-old. Remove jewellery other than gold or platinum; floors are slippery.

Política sobre tatuajes

The inn asks guests with tattoos not to use the shared baths; they may use the private family baths or the bath in their room.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Check-in 15:00–18:00 (from 14:00 when booked on the official site, some plans excluded; until 22:00 on room-only and breakfast plans), check-out 10:00, with late check-out at ¥1,000 per hour. Arrivals well after 18:30 may lose dinner.

  2. 02

Cancellation: 30% two days before, 50% the day before, 100% on the day or for no-shows.

  3. 03

Children are welcome: primary-school children pay 70%, preschoolers 50% with meals and futon (¥2,200 with neither); the modern 10-tatami rooms are adults-only.

  4. 04

Air conditioning is central and can't be switched between heating and cooling — fans and heaters are lent on request. There's a lift, but small steps at room entrances and the baths.

  5. 05

Day-visitor bathing has been suspended since 2020, and the inn closes on a few maintenance days a year (three in September 2026).
