Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

A Taishō-romance inn where every corridor and stair is tatami, with 100% free-flowing sulphur water from its own spring and Yamagata-beef dinners at a fair price — but the baths are small and crowd easily, there's no lift, and the open-air bath shuts all winter

Oomiya Ryokan claims a thousand years beside Zao's springs and dresses its 32-room house in Taishō-era (1912–26) nostalgia: colour-paned shōji-style windows, a Takehisa Yumeji print, and tatami laid through every corridor and staircase, so you walk barefoot from lobby to room. The inn calls its source Zao's biggest, about 720 litres a minute welling from a stone wall, and the inn says all its baths are 100% free-flowing strongly acidic sulphur water: an egg-shaped wooden tub, a spring bath with a bubble bath, and an open-air bath, swapped between men and women. Japanese guests rate it 4.48 across 1,182 scored reviews on Rakuten Travel (rooms, service, meals and baths all about 4.5) and 4.44 across 55 on Ikyu. They praise the barefoot comfort, the milky, prickly water, dinners built around a choice of Yamagata-beef sukiyaki, shabu-shabu or hot-plate grill with Tsuyahime rice, a free lounge, frequent room upgrades and a free shuttle from Yamagata Station. A June 2026 travelogue found the cheapest room on the third floor, about 15 tatami, with a view over the village. The complaints, dated 2025–2026: no lift (the acidic spring corrodes metal) and lots of stairs in a long, extended building; baths so small that three fill the egg tub, with only four washing stations; brusque front-desk replies; dust and an insect left in rooms; and some windows facing walls. The open-air bath closes from late November to early April. Two meals run about ¥15,400–21,000 per person; one June 2026 weekday early-bird stay cost ¥17,600.

Guía para elegir habitación

Recomendadas

  • View Modern Japanese rooms (眺望モダン和室), 10 or 12.5 tatami on the third floor

The inn's view rooms look over the old hot-spring village; a June 2026 traveller who booked the cheapest plan still got a third-floor room of about 15 tatami with Ryukyu tatami and a view over Zao Onsen, and a September 2025 guest in a 10-tatami Modern room also looked down on the village. The size (10 or 12.5 tatami) can't be chosen.

  • Japanese rooms with beds — Hollywood Twin, Double and Semi-double

Simmons beds on tatami floors, popular with solo travellers: several 2025–2026 guests booked a semi-double and were upgraded to a double or larger room at quiet times, and a March 2026 solo guest found the double spacious, spotless and warm with its own heater.

Mejor evitar

  • Far rooms in the extension and third-floor rooms, for anyone who struggles with stairs

There is no lift and the building is long and extended, so the farthest rooms are a real walk from the ground-floor baths and restaurants — older guests complained in December 2025, April 2026 and October 2026. A May 2026 guest got a room near the baths by asking in advance. Some rooms have no view (May 2025: the window faced the inn; July 2026: 'the view was so-so'), and one April 2026 room by the lounge picked up corridor voices. A July 2026 guest also found the TV faulty and the air conditioning weak.

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.3/5

A seasonal Japanese set (7:00, 7:30 or 8:00) with Tsuyahime rice, local mountain-vegetable dishes and, in June 2026, salmon saikyō-yaki, sasa-kamaboko, an onsen egg and Shōnai pork on a hot plate, plus a free corner of bread, coffee, yoghurt and dessert — praised by most, though a July 2026 solo guest found it a little sparse

Book the free shuttle from Yamagata Station's west exit (10:30 and 14:00) at least three days ahead. The Kamiyu public bath is right in front of the inn and the front desk sells discounted tickets and lends towels for the village's public baths; a free pass also covers the baths at the two sister hotels. Bath sides swap in the evening — if you want both, bathe before dinner.

Claves de la cena

4.4/5

Creative kaiseki at tables in the Koto or Tarobei restaurant (no in-room dining), with a choice of Yamagata-beef sukiyaki, shabu-shabu or hot-plate grill as the main and local dishes such as benibana sōmen and imoni; from 6 October to 26 November 2026 a 'Zao mountain' menu adds matsutake dobin-mushi. Reviewers in 2025–2026 called it the highlight — 'the best I've had', 'carefully made with good dashi', soft, tasty sukiyaki — and portions suit older appetites. A lighter course for older guests exists. Critics noted ordinary sashimi in the mountains (June 2026), a long wait for sōmen that left no room for dessert (July 2025) and a last-order time in the restaurant some didn't know about.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

Zao's strongly acidic sulphur spring (acidic, sulphur-containing aluminium sulphate-chloride type), which the inn says rises at about 720 litres a minute from the stone wall beside the building. The inn states all baths are 100% free-flowing (gensen kakenagashi). The water stings cuts and eyes, blackens jewellery and makes floors slippery.

Privacidad y ambiente

Three wooden baths, all swapping between men and women: the egg-shaped Tamago bath with two glass walls, a spring bath with a bubble bath, and an open-air bath fed directly from the stone wall (closed late November to early April). They're open 24 hours except cleaning at 11:00–11:30 and 19:00–19:30. Guests love the nostalgic wooden rooms and milky water but find them small: in November 2025 three people filled the Tamago bath, a December 2025 guest counted four washing stations, and in March 2026 women were given the small Tamago bath at night, which felt crowded with four. A free footbath sits in front of the inn (closed in winter). No private or in-room baths.

Política sobre tatuajes

The official FAQ says guests with tattoos may not use the baths. There are no private or in-room baths.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

    Check-in 14:00, check-out 10:00; guests with dinner must arrive by 19:00. Early check-in and late check-out cost ¥2,200 an hour (until 12:00).

  2. 02

Children must be of primary-school age or older — the inn wants a quiet house.

  3. 03

No lift anywhere and the baths aren't barrier-free; ask for a room near the baths if stairs are hard.

  4. 04

Food allergies must be notified five days ahead, and wheat and soy allergies can't be accommodated. Cancellation fees start three days before for groups of up to 14.

  5. 05

In winter the open-air bath and footbath close and the entrance lane is steep and can ice over; a January 2026 skier found ski access awkward, though the inn's FAQ lists a bookable free shuttle to the Yokokura slope, and the Kaminodai slope is a 7-minute walk.
