A big, lively 50-room inn behind a bonfire-lit gate, renamed Hoho in 2023: Iwamuro's black sulphur water in two free-flowing private baths, a steam stone spa, and free beer, sake and wine with a seafood dinner — but the main baths are recirculated and the dining hall gets crowded
Hoho is the March 2023 renaming of Hotel Ōhashi Yakata-no-Yu, an inn founded in the early Meiji era that sits behind a castle-style gate lit by bonfires in the middle of Iwamuro Onsen, a small spa town near Yahiko Shrine on the Niigata plain. Its 50 rooms — 48 Japanese, two Western — fill three wings around a 1,000-tsubo garden, with the hills of Tahōzan and 'Iwamuro Fuji' behind. Iwamuro's spring, found in 1713, is a sulphur-sodium-calcium chloride water that runs black and stains your soles; here it is at its best in two private baths the inn calls free-flowing. The inn's FAQ says the outdoor bath is recirculated, and a May 2024 onsen blogger read the posted analysis — heated, diluted, filtered, chlorinated — and found the indoor tub was not spring water at all. Japanese guests rate it 4.39 across 1,451 reviews on one major site (baths 4.44, dinner 4.39) and 4.4 across 1,839 on another. Most recent evidence comes from those booking-site reviews; a blogger who stayed room-only at the end of 2022 loved the steam stone spa but found the baths modest and the washing area freezing. In 2026 reviewers praised a seafood-heavy set dinner — abalone grilled alive, nodoguro rice, a big sashimi plate, Niigata beef — with free beer, sake and wine, welcome drinks in the lounge, a breakfast comparing three Niigata rices, large rooms and warm staff. The complaints: a banquet-style hall with queues for rice at peak times, a single 18:00 dinner start, an old building, late-night noise from groups and families, long walks for older guests, hard rice one October morning and an inattentive check-out. There are no allergy substitutions. Two-meal plans ran about ¥16,000–21,000 per person in autumn 2026.

Yahiko Panorama Rooms and Painting Rooms in the Yūbae wing (12.5 + 3 mats with a window-side sitting area)
The largest standard rooms, looking down on the garden towards the Yahiko hills, each with sliding doors painted by a calligrapher known for sake labels, so no two rooms are alike. A family of five in July 2026 found the room 'more than big enough' with a fine view, and an October 2026 couple who upgraded to a sixth-floor room watched the autumn colour start; one booking site lists rooms for eight to nine people of 19 mats and up on request.
Pet rooms (10 + 4.5 mats) — for travellers with dogs
Dogs may roam the room freely, with a large cage, a floored area and cleaning supplies provided; plans allow up to four small dogs, or one medium or large dog, and the inn opened small dog runs in March 2026. Several 2026 reviewers, with and without dogs, said they heard no barking from inside their rooms. Cats are not accepted, and a rabies certificate from the past year is required.

Rooms without a bath, the two Western rooms, and rooms far from the lifts
Some cheaper rooms have no bath (marked 'wakeari' when booking), and the two Western double rooms have their bathroom outside the room; in-room baths are not hot-spring water. 2026 reviewers mention an old building and fittings (September 2026), a long walk from the lifts and to the dining hall and baths that was hard for older family members (September 2026), and noise from families upstairs until 23:00 and in the garden until midnight (October 2026). Air conditioning is central and may not switch between heating and cooling; fans and heaters are lent at the front desk.

La cocina a fondo
Consenso sobre el desayuno
4.1/5A Japanese set of local dishes with self-serve rice — three daily Niigata rices (from areas such as Uonuma, Sado and Iwafune) to compare — plus a few self-serve extras and crab soup on some days, from 7:30; most 2026 reviewers loved the rice, but one October 2026 guest found it hard and dry and another expected more than one small slice of salmon
Ask about the private black-water baths at check-in: they cost ¥2,860 for 45 minutes, but an October 2026 reviewer used them free from 22:00 to 10:00 by signing a waiting board — mornings fill up after breakfast. The steam stone spa is extra (half price for staying guests on some plans), and a garden bonfire costs ¥3,300 for 90 minutes. Welcome drinks in the lounge, including local sake and wine, are free. There is no pickup: take a taxi from Iwamuro or Yahiko station, or drive (about 100 free spaces).
Claves de la cena
4.2/5A set dinner served from 18:00 in a shared dining hall, or in small rooms for two to four along 'Yanagi-kōji', an indoor lane recreating the old Hokkoku Kaidō highway. Autumn 2026 plans included a sashimi platter, nodoguro rice cooked in an iron pot, abalone grilled alive and Niigata beef on magnolia leaf; others offer Murakami beef and Echigo mochi-pork shabu-suki, or an Edo-style sushi course at the in-house counter Sushi Tsumugi. Beer, sour drinks, wine, sake and soft drinks are free with dinner — the thing reviewers mention most. Critics found it 'no privacy, a banquet feel' (October 2026) and the hall packed at peak times with a queue for rice; the inn makes no changes for allergies or dislikes and serves no extra dishes.
Onsen y bienestar: la realidad
Iwamuro's shared No. 4 source: a sulphur-sodium-calcium chloride spring (hypertonic, weakly alkaline, 54.3°C at source, pH 8.0) known as Iwamuro's 'black water' for the iron sulphide that darkens it. The inn's FAQ says the outdoor bath is recirculated and the two private baths free-flowing; the analysis posted at the baths (seen in May 2024) lists heating, added water, filtration and chlorine, and that visitor found the indoor main tub to be plain heated water with a chlorine smell.
Separate men's and women's baths (no swapping) — an indoor tub plus a roofed outdoor tub facing the garden — open 14:00–24:00 and 6:00–10:30, with a dry sauna but no cold plunge. Day visitors use them 13:00–17:30. Two black-water private baths for staying guests, and the 'Arashi-no-yu' steam stone spa, where you lie on hot mineral gravel in a cotton samue amid sulphur-scented steam. Reviewers love the dark, sulphur-smelling outdoor water; the steps in the outdoor tub vanish in the black water (a 2024 visitor tripped), one October 2026 guest noticed an oily smell, the water was too hot for children in August 2026, and a family found the private bath dim.
No policy found on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the inn. The two private baths are an alternative to the shared baths.

- 01
Check-in from 14:00 (by 19:30 on dinner plans), check-out 11:00 per the official site, though some booking-site plans state 15:00 and 10:00 — check your plan. The doors are locked around 23:00.
- 02
No food changes at all: the inn says it cannot guarantee safe meals for allergies or dietary restrictions and won't substitute dishes, so book only if that works for you.
- 03
A pet-friendly inn: dogs and some other small pets (not cats) stay in dedicated pet rooms, and you may meet dogs in the lobby and garden, though 2026 reviewers rarely heard barking.
- 04
Not barrier-free: there are steps at room entrances (about 10 cm), the baths and the dining hall, and no accessible toilet; wheelchairs are lent free.
- 05
A big, busy house with banquet halls for up to 250, day bathers and groups; 2026 reviewers mention students partying until dawn (June) and noisy families late at night (October).
