Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

A 22-room Iya Valley inn where a little wooden cable car you start yourself climbs to open-air baths over the mountain hamlets, with irori-side local dinners, a singing okami and a free bonnet-bus tour to the lit-up vine bridge — but the onsen is recirculated and the hilltop baths can get crowded

Hotel Kazurabashi is a hotel in name only: a 22-room inn on a slope of the Iya Valley, one of Japan's 'three great hidden regions', about five minutes' drive from the vine bridge it is named after. Its signature is a small hut-like cable car — guests press the start button themselves — that climbs from a third-floor courtyard to the Tenkū open-air baths, built of local blue Awa stone and looking across to hamlets clinging to the mountainside, with a foot bath and a thatched rest house with a sunken hearth. The water is a simple sulphur spring, but one leading booking site lists it as recirculated and filtered. Japanese guests rate it 4.68 across 990 reviews on one major site and 4.9 across 26 on another, with service the top score on both (4.76 and 4.9). Bloggers from 2022 to 2026 and 2025–2026 reviewers praise the staff, the dinners round an irori hearth — dekomawashi skewers, ayu, soba-grain porridge and Iya soba — the okami singing a local folk song at dinner, rooms refitted from 2021, and the free 20:00 night tour in a vintage bonnet bus to the illuminated bridge. The complaints, also recent: in 2026 the hearth-warmed skewers arrived lukewarm, a 2026 blogger found the open-air bath packed with groups ignoring bath etiquette, the cable car's bell can be heard from some rooms until 23:00, and an October 2026 guest was kept awake by noise from the floor above. Rooms book up, and two-meal stays run about ¥20,000–30,000 per person.

Recomendadas

  • Tenjin (天神, room 410), the only room with its own open-air bath

A 12-tatami Japanese room with a blue Awa-stone open-air bath among the trees and a massage chair, for two to five. An April 2026 guest who stayed here with an elderly parent bathed in it 'again and again'. The inn doesn't say whether this bath uses spring water.

  • The refitted Japanese-Western rooms: Suite (301/401), Semi-suite (501/502), Deluxe (312) and Premier ReFa rooms (411/412)

Tatami plus twin Simmons beds. The corner suites (40㎡) have a view bath, the top-floor semi-suites (30㎡, opened April 2021) a goemon-style tub, the Deluxe a far-infrared sauna, and the Premier rooms ReFa beauty gadgets (Deluxe and Premier opened March 2024). The view and goemon baths are plain hot water, not onsen. A family who first came about 25 years ago and has stayed five or six times called its first suite stay, in August 2026, faultless; a 2022 blogger in a refitted third-floor Japanese-Western room liked the Ryukyu tatami and roomy bathroom.

Mejor evitar

  • Standard Japanese-Western room 313, and rooms overlooking the cable-car station

Room 313 is compact (6 tatami plus twin beds) with a shower room and no bathtub; some of the 13 standard 12-tatami rooms also have only a shower, as a 2022 blogger found. A 2026 blogger whose room looked onto the cable-car station found that its lights stay on and its departure bell rings until 23:00 — 'you can't sleep' — and an October 2026 guest in a standard room heard the floor above until after 1:00.

La cocina a fondo

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.5/5

A Japanese country breakfast (7:30–9:30, last entry 8:30) at the same irori tables — a soy-milk hotpot in 2022, an Awa-odori chicken yuzu-salt hotpot, quiche and Ōno nori in 2026, finished with sudachi juice and pudding; praised, though one August 2026 guest found the desserts at both meals alike and missed fruit

Sign up for the free bonnet-bus night tour to the lit-up vine bridge at the front desk on the day you check in — it leaves around 20:00, you can only look at the bridge at night (not cross it), and in April 2026 it still ran in the rain. Go up to the open-air bath late in the evening or early in the morning (it opens at 6:00) for the best chance of having it to yourself; you can also walk up the footpath beside the cable car.

Claves de la cena

4.4/5

Served from 18:00 (last start 19:00) in the dining rooms Komi, Inakatei and Asa, each table with its own irori hearth; there are no fully private rooms, and groups of 10 or more may be put in a banquet hall without one. Ayu and dekomawashi skewers of stone tofu, konnyaku and potato with sweet miso stand in the hearth, alongside soba-grain porridge, ayu sashimi, chawanmushi and Iya soba; a Tokushima wagyu steak plan is available. Guests rave about the dashi, the explanations of each dish and the okami's rendition of the local 'Iya no Kobiki-bushi'. A 2026 blogger and a March 2026 reviewer found the hearth-warmed skewers lukewarm, one 2026 guest found the explanations scripted, and an egg allergy slipped through at dessert in July 2026; a soba allergy was handled well in August 2026.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

A simple sulphur spring (Shin-Iya Onsen). The inn doesn't publish temperature or flow, but one leading booking site lists the onsen as recirculated and filtered — not free-flowing.

Privacidad y ambiente

Two Tenkū open-air baths at the top of the cable car — Unkai (men) and Jukai (women), where bloggers counted just two washing stations and found a lukewarm tsubo pot bath — plus third-floor indoor baths (Tengai-ken and Tengai-hana, with sauna), all open 6:00–23:00 and to day visitors from 10:30 to 16:00. Bookable private baths for staying guests: the open-air Takenoko-no-yu (¥3,850 for 45 minutes, 15:00–22:00) and three wood-fired goemon tubs (¥2,200 for 40 minutes, 15:00–21:00), reserved at the front desk on the day. Guests love the view and the cable-car ride, but a 2023 blogger found the indoor tub smaller than expected and a 2026 blogger found the open-air bath crowded and noisy with groups wearing shoes on the tatami.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Check-in 15:00, check-out 10:00. Rooms are hard to get: a 2022 blogger waited for a cancellation and a 2025 reviewer said they could never get a booking before.

  2. 02

Cancellation (up to 8 people): 10% from 5 days before, 20% from 3 days, 30% two days, 50% the day before, 80% on the day until 15:00 and 100% after.

  3. 03

Getting there takes effort: about 50 minutes' drive from Ikawa-Ikeda IC, or an infrequent bus (about 20 minutes, around ¥600) or a taxi (15 minutes, about ¥3,000) from JR Oboke Station — staff will explain the bus and train times.

  4. 04

The inn lists itself as barrier-free with wheelchairs to borrow, and families with grandparents praised the short walking distances. The whole building is non-smoking, Wi-Fi is free, and a 2026 guest notes free washing machines and dryers.

  5. 05

Children are welcome — a September 2026 family got a children's amenity set and a nappy bin — but one 2026 parent felt the local dinner may not suit children, and the menu leans on soba, so flag allergies when booking.
