Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

Four suites, each with its own onsen bath, in a quiet hot-spring village outside Kanazawa — known for its creative Hokuriku kaiseki, beef shabu-shabu breakfast, free drinks and 22:00 curry udon; the water is recirculated, the baths have little view, and there's no shared bath or lift

Kokarian opened in June 2018 in Yuwaku Onsen, a small hot-spring village in the hills 40 minutes from Kanazawa, and has since been listed in the 2021 Michelin Guide Hokuriku. (The Kokarian in Inami, Toyama, shares the name but is a separate inn.) There are just four non-smoking suites of 48–70㎡: two on the ground floor with an open-air onsen bath facing the garden, and two upstairs with a semi-open-air one. There's no shared bath, shop or vending machine. Instead, a lobby fridge of free beer, chūhai, juice and ice cream, plus nuts and Kaga bōcha tea in the room, make it an inn you settle into for the night. Japanese guests rate it 4.8 across 50 reviews on one major site (baths 4.9) and 4.67 across 43 on another. Bloggers who stayed in 2023, 2024 and January 2025 all single out the food: a kaiseki that changes every two months, served in private dining rooms on Kutani porcelain and Yamanaka lacquer, ending with donabe rice (leftovers come back as rice balls), a 22:00 curry udon on request, and a breakfast with beef shabu-shabu. Know before you book: the spring is low-temperature and the inn lists it as diluted, heated and recirculated, so not free-flowing. The baths look onto walls or garden rather than views, small insects get into the ground-floor baths in summer, and upstairs rooms are reached by stairs only. An April 2026 guest reported lukewarm white shrimp, cold tempura, an unattended front desk and an unexpected charge for a condiment, and one February 2026 guest found it 'not for everyone'. Two-meal rates start around ¥71,500 for two, rising to about ¥150,000 for the winter crab plans.

Recomendadas

  • Akae (赤絵, 70㎡) or Yoshidaya (吉田屋, 65㎡), the second-floor semi-open-air suites

The largest rooms, sleeping up to six (Akae) or five (Yoshidaya); Akae has a raised sleeping platform, a living room with a sofa and a separate tatami room. Groups of three in Akae in summer 2023 and January 2025 both found it roomy, with underfloor heating in the living room in winter. Upstairs baths are semi-enclosed, which a July 2026 repeat guest chose on purpose after battling insects in a ground-floor bath the year before. Bloggers found the bath big enough for two, with adjustable temperature.

  • Mokubei (木米, 48㎡) or Kokutani (古九谷, 56㎡), the ground-floor open-air suites

Japanese-style rooms with a true open-air bath facing the small garden, reached from both the shower room and the window-side sitting area; a February 2024 guest in Mokubei found the tub bigger than expected and enjoyed birdsong on a 7:00 soak. Best in the cooler months: a blogger in Mokubei on an autumn stay met only a praying mantis, and the garden is lit up at night.

  • Ground-floor rooms in summer; second-floor rooms if you want an open window

A summer 2023 blogger and a July 2026 guest both say small insects get into the ground-floor open-air baths in summer. Upstairs, an April 2024 blogger in Akae couldn't fully open the window without being seen from outside, found the mattress on the hard side and the view unremarkable, and the second floor is reached by stairs only — there is no lift.

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.7/5

A breakfast that reviewers call as lavish as a dinner, in the same private dining room between 7:30 and 8:30: beef shabu-shabu, local fish cured in kombu, Kaga vegetables, a green smoothie, a choice of grilled fish (nodoguro, hatahata or puffer) and donabe rice — near-universal praise, though one 2026 guest wanted a 7:00 option before the 10:00 check-out

Book the free shuttle from Kanazawa Station at least two days ahead: it leaves at 14:30 sharp from the group-bus stop outside the West (Kanazawa-kō) exit and returns at 10:10 — there are no other times. Bookings are online only. The inn says requests about foods you dislike can only be handled for phone bookings, while it also says it doesn't take phone bookings, so call during its 12:00–14:30 phone hours. Allergies are handled with notice. Fill in the questionnaire in your room for a small gift: a 180ml bottle of the inn's sake or a piece of Kutani ware.

Claves de la cena

4.6/5

A 'new Hokuriku Kanazawa creative kaiseki' from 18:00 (choose a start time up to 19:00) in private table rooms, changing about every two months. The current September–October menu runs from a cup of amazake through Hokuriku sashimi, tilefish and matsutake clear soup and Kaga jibuni to late-season hamo shabu-shabu, roast beef fillet and matsutake donabe rice. Upgrade plans add abalone shabu-shabu, wagyu or nodoguro, and live crab from November. Bloggers in 2023 and 2025 praised the elaborate dishes, the Kutani porcelain and Yamanaka lacquer, and the curry udon brought to your room at 22:00. Critics: a summer 2023 blogger found the sashimi only average for Hokuriku, a December 2025 couple got fatty beef despite asking otherwise, and an April 2026 guest got lukewarm white shrimp and cold tempura.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

Yuwaku Onsen's No. 5 source, a weakly alkaline sodium chloride-sulfate spring (colourless and odourless, 28.6°C, pH 8.3, according to the analysis a blogger photographed). One booking site lists it as diluted, heated and recirculated with filtration — not free-flowing; the inn adjusts each bath's temperature from outside on request.

Privacidad y ambiente

No shared bath: every room has its own onsen bath, open-air on the ground floor and semi-open-air on the second, usable whenever you like. Reviewers love the silky water and having the bath to themselves, but note the baths face walls or the garden rather than a view. Yuwaku's public bathhouse, Shirasagi-no-yu, and a free footbath are a short walk away.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Check-in 15:00, check-out 10:00. Bookings are online only; the phone line is staffed 12:00–14:30. Cancellation for one room: 20% from 10 days before, 30% from 7 days, 80% from 3 days, 100% on the day.

  2. 02

No children under junior-high age (12), including babies; older children get the adult menu.

  3. 03

Getting there without a car: the free shuttle runs once a day each way (14:30 from Kanazawa Station, 10:10 back), or take Hokutetsu bus 12 from the station's East Exit to Yuwaku Onsen (about 50 minutes, ¥600). There's no convenience store in the village.

  4. 04

No lift — the two second-floor suites are up a flight of stairs. The official FAQ says American Express and Diners cards aren't accepted.

  5. 05

A small staff: an April 2026 guest found nobody at the front desk, a lukewarm dish and a surprise charge for momiji-oroshi, and suggested the inn needs more people.
