Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

Hokkaido's all-inclusive lake retreat: 25 suites of 100㎡ or more, each with an open-air onsen bath, and drinks from champagne to craft gin included — book a high floor, because the view from the cheapest rooms takes in the road

Ao no Za opened in May 2019 as the flagship of the Tsuruga group's 'Za' series: just 25 suites, all facing Lake Shikotsu, every one at least 100㎡ with its own open-air onsen bath and an indoor jet bath. It runs all-inclusive — the minibar, room service from 14:00 to 23:00 (champagne, wine, whisky, craft gin, snacks and light meals), drinks with dinner and in the bar, siphon coffee and a late-night snack — and free culture activities such as indigo dyeing and tea ceremony. Japanese guests rate it 4.65 across 50 reviews on one leading site and 4.54 across 38 on another, scoring the baths and rooms highest; they love the top-floor Suite Sky Resort rooms with their heated sunrooms and lake panoramas, the slippery 'beauty' water, and the teppanyaki counter where you can order as much king crab and Furano wagyu as you like. The weaker points are consistent: food and especially breakfast score lowest, several reviewers found service uneven or staff inexperienced, dinners can run past three hours in windowless private rooms, a national road runs right in front of the hotel, and the in-room baths are recirculated and chlorinated rather than free-flowing. Expect from about ¥185,000 for two with dinner and breakfast in a low-floor suite; one blogger paid ¥210,346 for a top-floor room in February 2025.

Guía para elegir habitación

Recomendadas

  • Suite Sky Resort (スイートスカイリゾート) — the top-floor suites

The most consistently praised rooms: 100–120㎡ on the fourth floor with a floor-heated sunroom, a lake panorama, two sinks and Dyson dryers. A February 2025 blogger paid ¥210,346 for two with meals for room 405 and recorded −8°C on the terrace at 7am while the room stayed warm enough to go barefoot. Another guest who booked this category was upgraded to a 210㎡ maisonette villa.

  • Executive Suite Villa and Suite Villa — for families and groups

Maisonettes of 210–270㎡ (sleeping five, with a private airport car and turndown) and 120–140㎡ villas with a kitchen and dining area, which can be connected for up to seven. A family of four in a 140㎡ villa in November 2025 loved the space but found the indoor bathroom 'abnormally cold' and slow to run hot.

Mejor evitar

  • Low-floor Suite Resort (スイートリゾート【ローフロア・2階】), if the lake view matters

The cheapest way in, but reviewers report the road and obstacles between them and the lake — 'even from the third floor', one wrote in June 2026 — and one 2023 guest looked out over the roadside station. A solo guest in September 2025 was woken by traffic noise. Lake-view-guaranteed upper floors cost noticeably more.

La cocina a fondo

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.1/5

A Japanese set breakfast in a private room, starting with smoothies — dashimaki omelette, salmon, chicken congee and Yumepirika rice — though it's the lowest-scored part of the stay on several sites

Stay two nights if you can: guests say one night isn't enough for the bar, lounge and activities, and consecutive stays get a free afternoon tea. Book the teppanyaki counter by phone early — seats are very limited — and book culture activities, which end at 17:00.

Claves de la cena

4.3/5

Dinner is kaiseki in private rooms at the Mizushiro restaurant, or — at the same price, by phone and limited — the eight-seat Seisui teppanyaki counter, where guests choose king crab, abalone, scallops, Furano wagyu and Setana lamb 'as much as you like'. Kaiseki dishes guests mention include hime-masu, Rausu kinki, sea-urchin rice and Furano wagyu sirloin, with Barolo and Barbaresco among the included wines. The criticisms: a lack of Hokkaido character and originality for some, meals that felt far from first-class to one 2026 reviewer, dinners of over three hours, private rooms with no window, and smoke from the griddle at the front seats. In-room dinner isn't generally offered.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

A sodium bicarbonate spring sold as a 'beauty bath' for its silky, lotion-like feel. The official site says the in-room baths are recirculated, filtered and chlorinated for hygiene — not free-flowing — and one blogger noticed a faint chlorine smell.

Privacidad y ambiente

Every suite has its own lake-view open-air onsen bath, open 24 hours and big enough for three or four, plus an indoor jet bath that isn't onsen. There's no large bath on site; guests can use the large bath at the sister hotel Mizu no Uta across the road for free, and staff will drive you there. Guests praise the slippery water; one found insects visiting the outdoor bath in summer.

Política sobre tatuajes

No policy on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the hotel. With an onsen bath in every room you never need to share; the policy only matters for Mizu no Uta's large bath.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Getting there: a free shuttle runs from JR Chitose Station and New Chitose Airport (book by 19:00 three days ahead); by car it's about 40 minutes from the airport. A February 2025 guest paid just under ¥8,000 each way by taxi.

  2. 02

    Check-in 14:00, check-out 11:00. Bath tax ¥150 per adult, plus Hokkaido's accommodation tax (¥100–500 per person) since April 2026.

  3. 03

Under-20s can't use the bar or audio room. The lake shore is a 4–5 minute walk, and the nearest convenience store is about 30 minutes away by car.

  4. 04

Paid extras include in-room cellar wines, rare bottles, the spa and the shop. Service gets mixed marks: guests mention inexperienced or unsmiling staff and a spa booking that clashed with dinner.

  5. 05

Don't confuse it with the sister hotels Mizu no Uta and Kohaku no Sho (opened August 2026). In mid-February the nearby ice festival brings heavy traffic.
