Shima Onsen Kashiwaya Ryokan

A 14-room retro-modern inn where three private open-air baths are free, unbooked and usable as often as you like, with a noon check-out — but it's a wooden house with steep stairs, no lift and thin walls, and most rooms have no bath of their own
Kashiwaya is a small two-storey wooden inn of 14 rooms at the entrance to Shima Onsen, fully renovated in 2021 in a nostalgic 'wa-modern' style — black dial phones in the rooms, stained glass in the women's bath, a library with free house-roasted coffee — and every room faces the Shima river. The draw is three private open-air baths that cost nothing and need no booking: check the lamps in the corridor, lock the door and stay about 30 minutes, as often as you like from 15:00 to 1:00 and 5:00 to 11:00. Check-out is a late 12:00. The water is Shima's sodium-calcium chloride-sulphate spring; the inn's own table lists only the barrel bath Tsuki-no-yu and the two rooms with open-air baths as fully free-flowing, the rest as free-flowing with recirculation, with up to about 4°C of heating. Japanese guests rate it 4.7 across 1,256 reviews on one major site (dinner 4.8, rooms lowest at 4.3), 4.59 across 570 on another and 4.46 across 47 on a third (baths 4.79). Reviews from 2022 to 2026 praise the warm, young staff, Jōshū beef stone-grilled at the table, a choice of Japanese, Western or café-brunch breakfast, fresh towels in every changing room and a soap-bubble send-off. The complaints are consistent: no lift and steep stairs, including up to the private baths; thin walls, with snoring, footsteps and bangs heard in 2024–2026; cold ground-floor rooms and changing rooms in winter; standard rooms without a bath or shower; uneven dishes; and a 20-minute walk to the village centre. An August 2026 two-night stay on a beef plan got no beef on the first night. Standard two-meal rates run about ¥21,000–34,000 per person for two, from ¥3,000 more on Saturdays.

Hana (花) and Kame (亀), the two rooms with a free-flowing open-air bath
The only rooms with their own bath, and with Tsuki-no-yu the only fully free-flowing water in the house: Hana (about 36㎡) pairs a tatami room with a bedroom of low twin beds, Kame is a 10-tatami room with the bath on its deck terrace; both about ¥34,000 per person for two. An August 2026 guest found Hana comfortable without being too big and singled out the mattress. But a November 2024 couple in Hana found the bath visible from the road and buildings, so bathed behind the curtain, and heard loud bangs from below.
The singles Niji (虹, second-floor corner) and Akari (明, ground floor with a deck terrace)
Bookable by one person any day of the year, at about ¥25,000 and ¥23,000 with two meals. Niji is the room closest to the private baths; a November 2022 blogger paid about ¥18,000 for it with a travel subsidy, and a September 2025 guest found it small but well equipped. Solo diners get partitioned tables. One October 2025 guest in Akari smelled something like sewage from the bed and heard corridor noise and children running.

The standard 8-tatami rooms (Matsu, Take, Ume, Hoshi) and the 'wa-no-twin' rooms
These have a toilet and washbasin but no bath or shower — a May 2026 guest found that hard. Three people felt cramped in one (September 2025). A ground-floor room had a cold tatami floor and thin bedding in January 2026; a May 2026 guest in a terrace twin couldn't sleep for a neighbour's snoring and talk through the wall; and a November 2022 blogger in the twin Akatsuki heard cars directly from the roadside terrace, though traffic is light.

La cocina a fondo
Consenso sobre el desayuno
4.4/5Choose at check-in between a Japanese set with onsen-steamed vegetables and rice cooked in an iron pot, a Western set with bread baked in-house and the café's own coffee, or a late brunch (11:00–15:00, ¥1,500 credit) at the inn's Kashiwaya Cafe or Shima Terrace in the village — mostly praised; a 2022 blogger's steamer went cold when its burner died
Watch the corridor lamps and go whenever a private bath is free — with only 14 rooms, most guests manage all three, and the indoor baths are often empty. Bath towels wait in every changing room. There's no vending machine — drinks come by room service. Reserve extras such as a ¥3,000 Jōshū sirloin by 16:30, and ask to take leftover rice back to your room.
Claves de la cena
4.4/5A seasonal Japanese course of local produce in semi-private dining booths, built around Jōshū beef seared on a hot stone at the table, with rice cooked for each table (sea-bream rice in spring 2025) and the okami's home-made sweet hanamame beans, the dish bloggers remember. Guests praise the pacing and sake pairings; there's a lighter 'light meal' plan for ¥1,000 less, and even that was too much for some. Criticism: uneven dishes (a fishy conger tempura in July 2026), a disappointing light-meal menu and dark dining room in 2024, the hanamame missing in June 2026, and a smell of steak drowning out a grilled char.
Onsen y bienestar: la realidad
Shima Onsen's sodium-calcium chloride-sulphate spring (hypotonic, weakly alkaline, high-temperature) from two of the village's sources, about 72 tonnes a day. Per the inn's own table, the Hana and Kame room baths and the Tsuki-no-yu private bath are free-flowing; the other two private baths and both indoor baths are free-flowing with recirculation, and up to about 4°C of heating and a little added water may be used. Some guests found the free-flowing Tsuki-no-yu lukewarm in November, others the private baths hot in summer.
Three private open-air baths, free and unbooked (15:00–1:00 and 5:00–11:00, about 30 minutes each): Tsuki-no-yu, a barrel of Kiso umbrella pine; Kaede-no-yu, a rock bath of Sanbagawa stone under maples; and Sakura-no-yu, edged in Gunma hinoki with a weeping cherry. They're reached up steps from the second floor, have outdoor washing areas whose showers can freeze in winter, and offer umbrellas or straw hats for rain. Separate men's (marble) and women's (hinoki and stained glass) indoor baths are open 15:00–11:00 and usually near-empty. Guests note dark paths to the private baths, cold changing rooms in winter and the odd stay when the baths were always occupied.
No policy found on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the inn. The three free private baths and two rooms with their own bath avoid sharing.
Advertencias y matices locales
- 01
Check-in 15:00, check-out 12:00. On-site parking for about 15 cars, which some find tight. Buses from Nakanojō Station are infrequent; the Shima Onsen-gō highway bus from Tokyo costs ¥3,500 one way.
- 02
There is no lift: most rooms are upstairs, the dining room and indoor baths below, and the private baths up more steps — people with limited mobility should ask before booking.
- 03
It's a wooden building, and guests in 2024–2026 repeatedly heard neighbours, footsteps and bangs; ground-floor rooms and the private-bath changing rooms can be cold in winter.
- 04
The inn sits at the village entrance, about 1.5 km (20 minutes' walk) from the village centre and a little under 2 km from Sekizenkan.
- 05
Children are welcome at set rates (¥2,000 sharing bedding without meals, up to ¥15,000 with a child's meal and futon), but some room types don't take children. Bath tax ¥150, and the inn closes on occasional days.
