Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

A former kappo restaurant turned small Noboribetsu inn: 13-course kaiseki served in your room at both meals and milky, free-flowing sulphur water — in an old building with small baths, mould and insects in some rooms

Kiyomizuya (it's read 'kiyomizuya', not 'shimizuya') began as a kappo restaurant and has been cooking for more than half a century, by its own account; today it's a quiet inn of around 30 rooms on the edge of Noboribetsu Onsen, with no day bathers and no buffet. Most recent evidence comes from booking-site reviews rather than blogs: it rates 4.35 across 579 reviews on Rakuten Travel (dinner 4.64, breakfast 4.57) and 4.4 across 76 on Jalan (dinner 4.7, service 4.6). The draw is the food and the way it's served — every plan puts dinner and breakfast in your room, the signature 'couple's set' gives two people 13 courses with three that differ so you can share, and a 2023 blogger called the dashi good enough to be a stock specialist's, singling out the dobin-mushi broth and the rice cooked with the meal. The baths are small but the water is 100% free-flowing, milky-white Noboribetsu sulphur spring, and 2026 reviewers keep saying they had them nearly to themselves. Drinks are cheap for an onsen inn (draft beer ¥660 in August 2026), and repeat guests mention being remembered. The catch is the building. 2025–2026 reviews describe peeling wallpaper and black mould (October 2026), dirty window frames, insects getting in, a fan instead of air conditioning in some rooms and weak heating in winter, cramped and hot changing rooms, and pipes hidden under the cloudy water to bump into. A May 2026 group found the meals dismal, and a September 2026 guest dining in a side room could hear staff arguing in the serving pantry. Expect about ¥38,000–66,000 for two with two meals.

Guía para elegir habitación

Recomendadas

  • Japanese-Western rooms (8-tatami room plus a separate bedroom)

A tatami room for meals with a separate bedroom down a short corridor, so the smell of dinner doesn't follow you to bed — a 2024 reviewer liked exactly that. A March 2026 family found theirs very spacious, and several plans offer a free upgrade to one; expect about ¥23,500–24,500 per person. One June 2026 reviewer found no power socket in the Western room, and a May 2026 one none by the bed.

  • Two-room Japanese suites (wa-shitsu futama)

Two tatami rooms offered on the 'special plan with someone important', where you choose a meat or fish main; a 2023 blogger used the second room for luggage. From about ¥26,500 per person on the inn's own booking engine.

Mejor evitar

  • Any room, if you mind wear and tear

Rooms start from about ¥19,000 per person, and reviews of every room type comment on age: a sliding door that kept coming off its runner and a running toilet (2025), peeling wallpaper (2025 and October 2026, with black mould), mould around window frames (June 2026), ladybugs and other insects in autumn, and noise from a room upstairs that led to a room change (August 2026). One June 2026 guest had only a fan, though an August 2026 guest found a window air conditioner newly fitted.

La cocina a fondo

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.4/5

A traditional Japanese breakfast served in your room — grilled salmon or hokke, rich tarako, the inn's own aonori seaweed and wasabi pickles, with a rice tub filled to the brim because 'it's all food that goes with rice'

The men's and women's baths swap in the evening (around 21:00–21:30 in a 2021 report), and only one side has the open-air bath, so check the times at check-in and plan to bathe once before and once after the switch. Dinner times are first-come, first-served — a September 2026 guest was left with only the latest slot — so ask for your preferred time when booking.

Claves de la cena

4.6/5

A 13-course kaiseki (14 on the 'heartfelt' plan) laid out in your room by the staff member looking after you. On the 'couple's set' three of the dishes differ — pork or beef sukiyaki, sawara or black cod, as a 2023 blogger put it — and the plan is open to any pair, not just couples. Reviewers single out the sashimi, the dashi, dobin-mushi and the rice cooked with the meal; a 2021 autumn menu had matsutake dobin-mushi, Shiraoi beef on a hot plate and scallop-and-corn rice, and a March 2026 guest chose simmered kinki. One booking site also shows a hairy crab of over 500g served raw and boiled — check which plan includes it. Drinks are priced like a pub's: draft beer ¥660, sours ¥550, local sake ¥750–1,000 (August 2026). Criticisms: a May 2026 group called both meals dismal, a 2025 guest found the food ordinary, a January 2026 guest couldn't find anyone to order a drink, and a 2024 guest felt the plates were cleared in a hurry.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

Noboribetsu sulphur spring (hydrogen sulphide type), milky white with plenty of yu-no-hana flakes, which the inn describes as 100% free-flowing source water. There's only one spring type.

Privacidad y ambiente

Two small shared baths — the hinoki-scented indoor Hinoka-no-yu and a rocky, fenced open-air bath, Seseragi-no-yu — swap between men and women; there's no private (kashikiri) bath and no sauna. With no day visitors and no large groups, many 2026 reviewers had the bath almost to themselves, but others found the bath and changing room cramped, hot and poorly ventilated (only a fan in summer), with pipes and fittings hidden under the cloudy water. The open-air bath was closed one morning in May 2026, and a 2024 guest found only one hair dryer in the changing room.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Check-in 14:00–19:00, check-out 10:00 (some plans 13:00 and 11:00). Free parking for about 30 cars across the road, and staff come out to help with luggage. It's about ten minutes' walk from the Noboribetsu Onsen bus terminal, which is around 15 minutes by bus from JR Noboribetsu Station.

  2. 02

This is an old building: expect worn fittings, cold corridors in winter, insects at some times of year and, in some rooms, no built-in air conditioning — several reviewers say the food and service make up for it, others don't.

  3. 03

All rooms have been non-smoking since 2025, with a smoking room on the ground floor; a 2024 reviewer still noticed stale smoke in a room.

  4. 04

If you book several rooms or are five or more people, meals are served in a private dining room rather than your own room. Children are welcome: one booking site lists children's yukata, baby food on request and a free stroller.

  5. 05

The inn's own website only launched in April 2026 and most of its pages are still locked, so book through Japanese booking sites or the inn's online booking page. Don't confuse it with other inns called Shimizuya or Kiyomizuya elsewhere in Japan.
