Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

A 21-room inn in a town of big hotels: milky free-flowing sulphur water, both meals served in your room and free draft beer and sake all stay — but the baths are tiny, the walls thin and the building showing its age

Kashoutei Hanaya bills itself as the smallest inn in Noboribetsu, a town otherwise lined with large hotels: 21 rooms on four floors at the quiet lower end of the resort, beside the cloudy Kusurisanbetsu river. Two things set it apart. The baths take the acidic sulphur water piped from Jigokudani, about a kilometre away, and the inn calls it 100% free-flowing — rare in Noboribetsu — though a 2022 blogger was told it is watered down in summer. And both dinner and breakfast are served in your room. Since the inn went 'drink-inclusive', draft Sapporo Classic, highballs, sake, Noboribetsu milk and soft drinks in the lobby are free throughout the stay and can be carried to the room. Japanese guests rate it 4.8 across 62 reviews on one major site (dinner and service both 4.8) and 4.68 across 31 on another, where food scores 4.93. Bloggers from 2022 to 2026 praise the seasonal kaiseki — Shiraoi beef seared sushi, sukiyaki and hot-plate beef, sea-bream boat platters, rice cooked in an iron pot — the free minibar and Noboribetsu pudding on the renovated top floor, and staff who photograph birthday and 88th-birthday celebrations and frame the prints. The catch is the scale: the indoor and outdoor baths each hold about three people, with four washing stations, and 2026 reviewers mention thin walls and noisy neighbours, an ageing building, low tables that are hard on older knees, a narrow, hard-to-find car park and, in one August 2026 review, large insects in the outdoor bath. Two-meal plans start at ¥24,500 per person; a 2026 blogger paid ¥39,100 per person for a room with its own onsen bath.

Guía para elegir habitación

Recomendadas

  • Botan (牡丹), the one Japanese-Western room with its own onsen bath

34㎡ for up to five, with a ryūkyū-tatami room for in-room meals, a separate bedroom and the only in-room bath the inn says uses natural spring water. A 2026 blogger in room 207 called the milky private bath 'the best' — but bathed in it so often that a T-shirt needed several washes to lose the sulphur smell — and suggests it for two or three rather than four. Limited to one room, so book early.

  • The renovated fourth-floor Executive Floor — the twin rooms Hoozuki (ほおづき) and Katakuri (かたくり), Hamanasu (はまなす) or the Matsu (松) suite

Five redesigned rooms with a free minibar of beer, sake, wine and Noboribetsu pudding, a coffee or espresso machine and extra amenities. Bloggers in August 2022 and July 2024 liked the 15.5㎡ corner twin Hoozuki, with two windows, table-and-chair meals and quiet nights, though the combined washroom and shower booth is cramped. The 45㎡ Matsu suite (up to six) has the inn's only balcony and table seating that suited a 2026 family with parents who have trouble walking.

Mejor evitar

  • Standard Japanese rooms (6–10 tatami), especially the cheapest

Most have only a toilet and washbasin, no bath or shower (three 10-tatami rooms have an ordinary unit bath, not onsen water). Meals are served at low tables on floor cushions; in August 2026 a guest found this hard for older people and disliked having breakfast with the futon pushed aside. Reviewers in March and August 2026 heard neighbours' voices and children through thin walls, and the bath baskets are provided only in higher-grade rooms.

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.5/5

A Japanese breakfast in your room (7:00–8:45, chosen in 15-minute slots at check-in): grilled fish such as hokke, freshly made rolled omelette, yudōfu or cold tofu, local Noboribetsu dairy and rice from a pot — praised as light, varied and generous

Book the free shuttle from JR Noboribetsu Station by the day before (arrivals 13:50–18:20); the car park is free but hard to find and narrow, across a bridge from the inn. The inn sits at the quiet entrance to the resort, a walk from the main street and too far to walk comfortably to Jigokudani, though staff will sometimes drive you. Later dinner slots go first, so choose your time early.

Claves de la cena

4.7/5

Seasonal kaiseki served in your room (starting 17:30–19:00), with menus changing every three months and a choice of main: the 'gyū-zanmai' beef menu (Shiraoi beef seared sushi, sukiyaki, Shiraoi and Tokachi beef on a hot plate), sea-bream boat platters, or split plans for a meat-lover and a seafood-lover. Allergies and dislikes are handled when notified in advance. Most courses arrive at once and you call for dessert. Small gripes: a crowded table, cooking raw beef with your eating chopsticks (2024), portions some find on the small side, and an August 2026 critic who found nothing memorable. Late-night snacks such as Enma yakisoba are sold.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

Noboribetsu's No. 1 Otsu-sen spring from Jigokudani — an acidic sulphur–iron simple spring (pH 2.3, 72.5°C on the analysis posted at the inn), milky grey with sediment that clouds the water when stirred. The inn describes it as 100% free-flowing, cooled without adding water, but a 2022 blogger was told it is watered down in summer.

Privacidad y ambiente

One indoor bath and one small outdoor bath by the river for each sex, swapped overnight, with four washing stations; open 4:30–1:00. Towels and a full range of toiletries are at the baths. No sauna, no private hire baths, photography banned. Reviewers often have the baths to themselves thanks to the small size and in-room dining, but mornings can mean a wait for the outdoor tub and the bath feels cramped when shared. Only Botan has an onsen bath in the room.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Check-in 14:00, check-out 11:00. Exterior repair and waterproofing work runs from 7 September to 10 December 2026 (8:30–17:30), with possible noise, scaffolding and closed windows; one October 2026 guest didn't notice it.

  2. 02

Cancellation: 10% from 5 days before, 20% at 3–4 days, 30% at 2 days, 50% the day before, 90% on the day, 100% for no-shows.

  3. 03

The free lobby drinks have widened over time — a February 2025 review mentions beer and sake only from 14:00 to 17:00, while the inn now says they're available throughout the stay (some premium drinks cost extra).

  4. 04

Bathing tax of ¥300 per person aged 13 and over is extra. All rooms are non-smoking; there is a smoking area on the ground floor.

  5. 05

Expect a strong sulphur smell — in the river air, the baths and on your clothes afterwards.
