Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

Fourteen private villas of 250㎡ each, kaiseki served in your own tatami room and a milky, tingling acidic spring — superb privacy, but a grand 1992 inn now showing its age

Hanzuiryo opened in 1992 as one of Kyushu's most lavish inns: about 5,000 tsubo of wooded garden holding villas of some 250㎡, most of them two storeys, plus two 300㎡ special buildings. The inn says it has held one MICHELIN Key for 2024, 2025 and 2026. Japanese guests rate it very highly — 4.80 across 28 reviews on one leading site, with service at 4.86 — for the sheer space, the garden, a dedicated room attendant, and a privacy so complete that one guest 'never met another guest'. Dinner is a monthly-changing kaiseki in your villa's tatami room from a head chef in post since 2018 — lotus-leaf sesame tofu, charcoal-grilled ayu, Nagasaki wagyu, whole fugu sashimi — and it's generous to the point of excess. The spring is strongly acidic and sulphurous, milky with an iron smell, leaving skin tingling; you reach the shared bath through an underground passage from your villa. Know two things before you pay: the hinoki baths in the standard villas are heated tap water, not onsen (only the two special rooms have an onsen tub), and since ownership changes around 2024 reviewers have reported worn fittings, holes in fusuma, a musty carpet, fewer dinner courses and a private-bath area closed for low spring flow — the inn has acknowledged 'ageing facilities and delayed repairs', and it began phased room renovations in 2026 that are due to run until 2027. Expect from about ¥158,400 for two with two meals, or ¥132,000 on a first-visit plan sold only on the official site.

Guía para elegir habitación

Recomendadas

  • Two-storey villas (e.g. Fuyo, Fukujuso, Suisen)

About 250㎡ each, with tatami rooms on both floors, a hinoki bath and your own dining room where dinner and breakfast are served; Fuyo and Minazuki were fully renovated and reopened on 17 July 2026 (dinner in these two is served in the ground-floor hall). A 2022 guest in Fukujuso ate in a 21-tatami room. The trade-off is plenty of stairs, and the hinoki bath is heated tap water.

  • Special rooms Tsubaki-en and Kotobuki-en

Single-storey 300㎡ buildings with a home bar, sauna and an open-air bath that is real onsen water — the only rooms with onsen of their own (the indoor bath is not onsen). From about ¥323,400 for two.

Mejor evitar

  • Any villa, if you expect a flawless luxury finish

Several 2025–2026 guests describe the whole facility as clearly ageing: a spongy floor, holes in the fusuma, a musty carpet, too few sockets, and a ground-floor air conditioner one guest couldn't operate. There's no lift and villas involve a lot of stairs. The inn is renovating villas in phases through 2027, starting with Fuyo and Minazuki in July 2026.

La cocina a fondo

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.5/5

A Japanese breakfast in your villa, with rice cooked in the room, Unzen tofu and rolled omelette; one restaurant-meal plan offers breakfast ordered at the table, with excellent French toast

Ask about the private-hire west baths when you book — they were closed in April 2026 because of low seasonal spring flow — and use the free pickup within Unzen rather than the nearest bus stop, where the garden gate doesn't open.

Claves de la cena

4.5/5

Monthly-changing honkaiseki, starting between 17:30 and 19:30, usually served in your villa's tatami room: sesame tofu wrapped in a lotus leaf, prawn dumpling soup, sea bass or hamo, charcoal-grilled ayu (bones returned as crackers), sea bream baked in salt, whole fugu sashimi and Nagasaki wagyu. Guests call it 'very filling', with too many dishes to finish. A November 2025 reviewer, paying about ¥200,000 a night, felt dinner had shrunk from 13 to 10 courses and the drinks and extras were thin; another found it not especially high-end. The minibar has free soft drinks but no alcohol, and there's no bar.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

A strongly acidic, sulphurous spring, milky with an iron smell; guests describe skin 'tingling' afterwards. One booking site lists it as heated and diluted while also calling it free-flowing.

Privacidad y ambiente

The shared east bath (indoor bath, open-air bath, sauna and cold plunge; 15:00–24:00 and 5:00–11:00) is reached by an underground passage from each villa. The west baths are booked privately in 90-minute slots, each with its own sauna and cold plunge — when open. Standard villas' hinoki baths are not onsen ('a shame it isn't hot-spring water', one guest wrote); only the special rooms have an onsen tub. One 2025 guest found the open-air bath lukewarm.

Política sobre tatuajes

Not stated on the official or Japanese booking sites. A third-party guide says the public bath is not allowed but the private bath is — unverified; the special rooms' onsen tubs and the private-hire baths avoid sharing.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Ownership and operators have changed several times since 2010; since late 2025 the inn has been run by Fuji Mountain Premium Resort, with a new general manager. Long-time guests say facilities slipped in recent years, and the inn has acknowledged delayed repairs — phased renovations are now under way.

  2. 02

Getting there: about 70 minutes by taxi from Nagasaki Airport or 55 minutes from Isahaya Station, or buses via Isahaya; the inn arranges partner-rate taxis and offers free pickup within Unzen by reservation. Check-in 15:00 (by 19:00 for dinner), check-out 11:00.

  3. 03

Prices: from about ¥158,400 for two with two meals in standard villas and ¥323,400 in the special rooms (2026). A first-visit plan on the official site costs ¥66,000 per person (two rooms a day; stays to March 2027). Bath tax ¥150. Two free EV chargers in the car park.

  4. 04

Not barrier-free: no lift and many stairs within the villas.

  5. 05

Children are accepted — in-room dining makes it easier — and child yukata and baby food can be arranged.
