Unzen Onsen Azumaen
雲仙温泉 東園

A big, older lakeside ryokan where every room looks over Oshidori Pond, the baths run on the inn's own free-flowing spring and dinner ends with sushi made at your table — but only 8 of 27 rooms have a private bath, the main baths are a long walk away, and the building shows its age
Azumaen (written 東園) sits on the shore of Oshidori Pond at the quiet edge of Unzen's hot-spring town, about ten minutes' walk from its small eating street. It's a 27-room house with a 230-seat banquet hall and a Japanese garden, and every room faces the pond. In 2009 the current Emperor, then Crown Prince, stayed in its Azuma suite. Since 2015 the inn has rebuilt eight rooms with open-air or semi-open baths fed by its own spring, and added two pond-view restaurants, on the lake (2021) and in the cloud (2024). The draw is the water and the food: an acidic simple spring with hydrogen sulphide, 55°C at source, piped in free-flowing with no added water or heating according to staff, and a kaiseki of Ariake Sea seafood, Unzen akaushi beef and sushi made at your table. Japanese guests rate it 4.48 across 573 reviews on Rakuten Travel (dinner 4.62) and 4.6 across 558 on Jalan (dinner 4.8). Most recent evidence comes from booking-site reviews; only one detailed stay report (November 2023) turned up. Reviewers in 2025–2026 praise the pond views, huge rooms, the soft water, playful dishes and warm dining staff. The complaints are consistent: the building is dated, standard rooms are a long walk via the lobby and lift from the separate bath building, and some found the food or service short of the price — thin akaushi in July 2026, disappointing sashimi in April 2026, an empty front desk at check-in in August 2026. Standard rooms run about ¥19,000–28,000 per person with two meals; private-bath rooms cost far more.

Riyu (莉結) and Matsurika (茉莉花), the open-air-bath rooms renewed in 2015
66㎡ with a Japanese room, a twin bedroom, a sofa and an open-air bath of the inn's own spring facing the pond. The November 2023 stay report chose Riyu and spent the evening and early morning in its bath listening to birdsong. A third open-air-bath room, Suishoku (翠色, 2023), sleeps four in beds. These three rooms, plus five with semi-open baths, are the only option for guests with tattoos.
Special rooms and Japanese-Western rooms facing the pond
Very large layouts (a Japanese room plus a second room or a Western room with twin beds) without a private bath; 2026 reviewers called them 'bigger than our house', and several were upgraded free from a standard room. The two imperial suites, Azuma (238㎡, where the then Crown Prince stayed in 2009) and Subaru, sleep up to 13 with a hinoki semi-open bath.

Standard Japanese rooms, and the newer private-bath rooms if you expect perfection
Standard rooms (66㎡, the bulk of the inn) have a pond view but an ordinary bath; reviewers in 2023, 2025 and 2026 found the walk to the bath building long, especially for older parents. Older fittings also come up: a stained hallway carpet and an old hair dryer (July 2023). In the private-bath rooms, an L-shaped outdoor tub turned out to be usable only in its square part (March 2024), Suien's semi-open bath felt added-on with sulphur stains on the glass (November 2025), and a September 2026 guest in a four-bed room found hair on the floor and the tub only half full.

La cocina a fondo
Consenso sobre el desayuno
4.4/5A Japanese set breakfast in the restaurant or a private dining room (start 7:00–8:30): Kyushu Koshihikari rice, seasonal grilled fish, a vegetable terrine and miso soup made with flying-fish (ago) stock — reviewers find it gentle and well made, though a March 2024 guest thought much of it was made ahead
Book on the official site — it is 5% cheaper than the booking sites. Ring ahead (by the morning of the day before) for the free pickup from the Unzen bus stop; staff also drive guests within Unzen, including to the Jigoku vents and the small eating street. Welcome tea and a canelé are served in the lobby. Don't open the pond-side screens in summer — insects come in.
Claves de la cena
4.4/5A kaiseki served in the pond-view restaurants, a private dining room or (for the larger room types) your room, starting 17:30–19:00. The inn says it uses no processed ingredients and serves dinner on Arita porcelain. Dishes reviewers mention in 2026: vegetable sticks on an ice mountain, a jelly 'Oshidori Pond' with side dishes, akaushi steamed in a bamboo basket and sushi made at your table by the chef. Upgraded plans add Ise lobster and abalone. Critics found the steamed beef too thin (July 2026), the sashimi below par (April 2026) and the meal not worth a ¥85,000 room (November 2025). Children can have adult courses at 70% or children's meals at 50%.
Onsen y bienestar: la realidad
The inn's own source: an acidic simple spring with hydrogen sulphide, 55.0°C at source and clear rather than milky, with an unusually high 210.4 mg of metasilicic acid that the inn credits for the soft feel. It reaches the baths free-flowing; a staff member told a 2025 guest no water is added and it isn't heated, so temperatures vary with the day. The private room baths use the same chlorine-free water, sometimes cooled with mountain spring water.
The shared baths are in a separate building, Rien (莉園): an indoor bath whose big windows seem to run straight into the pond, an outdoor bath, a sauna and a cold plunge, open 5:00–10:00 and 15:00–24:00 for staying guests only. 2024–2026 reviewers loved the view but noted steamed-up glass, insects floating in the outdoor bath (May 2024) and a plain, small outdoor tub. Eight rooms have private baths; there are no private-hire baths.
The official FAQ says guests with tattoos (including fake ones) can't use the large baths and should book one of the three open-air-bath or five semi-open-bath rooms.
Advertencias y matices locales
- 01
Check-in 15:00–18:00, check-out 10:00 (11:00 on some plans). The inn doesn't open its doors before 15:00 and doesn't take day bathers.
- 02
Getting there without a car is slow: about 80 minutes by bus from Isahaya, or the Nagasaki Station express bus (about 100 minutes, three a day). Free parking for 80 cars.
- 03
Children are welcome and baby plans are offered, but under Nagasaki rules only children aged 6 or under may enter the bath for the other sex.
- 04
Reviewers repeatedly call the building old and 'Showa-era', though most add that it is kept clean; a few nearby hotels have closed, which some found bleak.
- 05
Service gets mixed reports: dining staff are widely praised, but some 2024–2026 guests found the front desk empty at check-in or check-out and the room guidance minimal.
