Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

A small family-run Hirayu inn by the bus terminal where a Gifu master chef's Hida-beef kaiseki and three untouched hot springs — with two free 24-hour private baths — earn near-perfect scores; the rooms are plain and small, with no baths of their own

Oyado Eitaro is a small family-run inn a minute's walk from the Hirayu Onsen bus terminal, opened about 45 years ago by Mitsuhiro Sakamaki, then head chef at a Hirayu ryokan and holder of Gifu's 'master of cuisine' title. A second-generation chef trained in ryōtei kitchens now cooks alongside the founder, and the family runs the house with the okami. The inn admits it has little glamour and no polished service; the draw is food and water. Dinner is an 11–12-course kaiseki sent out dish by dish from a kitchen behind a noren curtain: marbled horse sashimi, salt-grilled ayu, A5 Hida-beef sirloin grilled over charcoal on a magnolia leaf with house miso, and a Hida-beef kamameshi. Breakfast brings tofu made each morning and all-you-can-eat egg on rice. The baths use three sources with no added water, heating, recirculation or disinfectant, including a sulphurous spring added in March 2026, and two private baths with indoor and open-air tubs are free and open 24 hours. Japanese guests rate it 4.9 across 508 reviews on one major site (dinner 5.0, rooms 4.4) and 4.75 across 299 on another (dinner 4.94). Bloggers from 2022 to 2026 and 2026 reviewers describe more food than they could finish, dishes arriving piping hot, warm staff and baths almost to themselves, and many say it is hard to book. The complaints are about the building: plain, smallish nine-mat rooms with no bath, cramped shared changing rooms, voices from the private baths heard in the discounted rooms above them until 23:00 (May 2026), yellowed yukata and slippery slippers (August 2026), and food some found salty or rich. Two-meal stays run about ¥16,000–26,000 per person.

Recomendadas

  • Special rooms Momijigasa (紅葉笠, room 201) and Iwanashi (岩梨)

Corner rooms renovated in May 2021, with a 9-mat bedroom area and a 14-mat living area, a private shower, toilet and washbasin, an air conditioner with air purifier, a TV that streams YouTube and Netflix, and skincare amenities. 2026 reviewers who upgraded found them spacious and restful — 'that alone was healing', wrote an August 2026 guest who paid ¥23,000–24,000 per person. There is still no bathtub: bathe in the onsen.

  • Standard 9-mat Japanese rooms in the annex, with toilet and washbasin

Simple tatami rooms with a window-side sitting area, air conditioning, a safe, kettle and Wi-Fi. A 2022 blogger found the room not large but well equipped and clean, and an October 2026 couple found the futons already laid at check-in and the toilet and basin handily behind one door. Stays here run about ¥14,000–18,000 per person with two meals.

Mejor evitar

  • Discounted 'wake-ari' rooms above the private baths, and anyone wanting space or a bath in the room

The inn sells the standard plan ¥1,100 cheaper in rooms that sit over the private baths, warning that bathers can be heard; a May 2026 guest couldn't sleep for voices until 23:00, though an August 2026 guest wasn't bothered. No room has its own bath. A December 2025 guest found the long, narrow 9-mat room a little cramped, the window-side chairs are hard wooden ones (September 2026), the fridge is empty and was unplugged in 2022, and the official site lists air conditioning only in the annex and special rooms.

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.8/5

A big Hida set breakfast — hoba miso, agedashi tofu fried from tofu made in-house each morning, river fish caught by the owner and dried overnight, and unlimited tamago-kake-gohan with local eggs, a house soy sauce and five or more condiments — praised almost without exception

Leaving early to hike? The dinner-only plan offers an onigiri lunchbox for ¥800, and an August 2026 climber had breakfast packed as a bento. Many plans include a ticket for the nearby Hirayu-no-Mori day spa, and you can leave the car in the inn's free car park while taking the bus to Kamikōchi. If dinner beats you, staff will turn leftover kamameshi into rice balls for later.

Claves de la cena

4.9/5

An 11–12-course kaiseki in the dining room (tables were half-screened in 2022), with each dish timed to your pace from the kitchen: wild mountain vegetables, ikemori namasu, marbled horse sashimi with garlic soy, salt-grilled ayu, A5 Hida-beef sirloin charcoal-grilled on a hoba leaf with house miso and butter, tororo soba, prawn and vegetable ankake tempura, a hotpot, Hida-beef kamameshi and coconut pudding topped with coffee jelly. Other plans swap the steak for a lighter Hida-beef seiro steamer (the repeaters' choice), triple the beef, or add soft-shell turtle. An October 2026 reviewer called it by far the best inn food they had eaten, and a two-night guest got a different menu each night. The only gripes are the sheer volume, a heavy hand with salt, and wishing for plain salt instead of butter and miso on the beef (January and August 2026).

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

Three sources, all poured — according to the inn — with no added water, no heating, no recirculation and no disinfectant: Yu-no-hira (sodium-calcium bicarbonate-chloride spring, 70°C, pH 6.8, cooled by heat exchanger, faintly cloudy, sold as a 'beauty bath') in the main indoor bath; Iegami (sodium-calcium bicarbonate spring, 70°C, piped straight from behind the inn, 1.76 g/kg of dissolved minerals — the inn says five times Gero's — turning a brownish green with traces of iron and sulphur) in the main open-air bath; and since March 2026 Tenchō, a spring with hydrogen sulphide and floating yu-no-hana, in both private baths.

Privacidad y ambiente

Small men's and women's baths in the main building, each with an indoor and an open-air tub, plus two free private baths, each with an indoor and an open-air tub — one compact, one roomy — usable 24 hours without booking: lock the door and flip the sign. Children's bath mats are provided. Reviewers love the overflowing water, mineral-crusted floors and near-empty baths (a September 2022 blogger always had them alone); the gripes are cramped changing rooms (room for about three adults on the men's side) with three washing spots, a hot indoor bath, slippery deposits, dark residue on hands and feet from the tub floor (July 2026), and one April 2026 guest who found the baths underwhelming.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Check-in 15:00 (last 19:00 — call if arriving after 18:00), check-out 10:00. A ¥150 bathing tax applies, and Takayama has charged an accommodation tax since October 2025 (under-12s exempt).

  2. 02

Cancellation (main booking site): free until 4 days before, 20% from 3 days before, 50% on the day, 100% for no-shows.

  3. 03

Small and often full — many reviewers mention struggling to get a room. Booking 30 or more days ahead unlocks an early-bird discount on the standard plan.

  4. 04

Parking is 15 free spaces, first come, first served. Winter tyres or chains are required from December to early April, and the inn closes occasionally for maintenance (16–25 June 2026, for example).

  5. 05

Families are welcome — 2026 reviewers came with children and grandparents — but the standard dinner is very large; repeaters pick the lighter steamed-beef plan.
