Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

Unzen's 1929 inn, rebuilt from scratch in 2022 as a dim, design-award-winning 39-room house above the steaming Jigoku — milky free-flowing sulphur baths and widely praised local cooking, but most rooms have only a shower and the shared baths close at 9am

Miyazaki Ryokan opened in Unzen in 1929 and, after a full rebuild, reopened in December 2022 with fewer than half its old rooms — 39 in all — as a modern inn that bloggers say won a 2023 Good Design Award. Every room faces the Japanese garden, laid out at the founding and steaming with three small jigoku vents, and the sulphur-fumed hills beyond; lighting is kept deliberately low so the view stands out. The baths draw a milky, acidic sulphur spring from Daikyōkan Jigoku next door, and the inn says every bath is free-flowing. Japanese guests rate it 4.92 across 850 reviews on one major site, 4.78 across 168 on another (meals and baths 4.80) and 4.7 across 24 on a third. Bloggers who stayed in February 2024, August 2024 and one spring before Golden Week loved the garden views, a creative course of local seafood, Nagasaki wagyu fillet and kamado-cooked Unzen rice, free in-room drinks, and on the top floor a lounge with wine at any hour. Know before you book: the 32 standard twins have a shower booth but no tub, and only the seven fourth-floor rooms have an onsen bath. The shared baths shut at 9:00, so there's no soak after breakfast. Complaints in 2025–2026 mention rooms, corridors and washrooms that are too dark, a compact main bath, dinners that felt over-elaborate, serving staff who couldn't answer questions about the fish or sake, and one guest who found it poor value. Two-meal stays start around ¥30,000 per person; one blogger paid about ¥108,000 for two in a top-floor room.

Guía para elegir habitación

Recomendadas

  • Premium Design Room and Premium Design Corner (fourth floor)

82㎡ including a 12㎡ terrace, two washbasins and a free-flowing, milky onsen bath that opens to the air — 'the real onsen', a July 2026 guest wrote of watching the jigoku steam from it. Rooms come in a light or a dark 'chic' tone, and the Corner has windows on two sides. Guests here get the STRINGS lounge, where a blogger found coffee, snacks and wine set out with no time limit. That blogger paid ¥108,378 for two with two meals, on a weekday 10%-off plan.

  • Deluxe Twin and Corner Deluxe Twin (second and third floors)

42㎡ including a 6㎡ terrace, with Sealy beds and free drinks in the fridge. Guests in 2026 watched the Daikyōkan Jigoku steam and the garden from the balcony, and one August 2026 reviewer called it 'a standard room, yet high quality'. Most two-meal plans for these rooms run about ¥29,000–30,000+ per person.

Mejor evitar

  • Deluxe Twins, if you want a bath in your room — and anyone who dislikes dim rooms

The Deluxe Twins have only a separate shower booth; for a soak you use the shared baths, which close from 9:00 to 15:00. The inn keeps lighting low by design, and 2026 reviewers found the rooms, corridors and washroom too dark, especially for older guests. Ask for a light-toned room if that bothers you.

La cocina a fondo

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.6/5

A Japanese set breakfast (7:30–9:00) in the garden-view Oyama Dining: a two-tier box of small dishes, then salad, grilled fish and chawanmushi; drinks other than tea are self-service — one of the inn's highest-rated features

Book a dinner slot (18:00, 18:30 or 19:00) at check-in; it's first come, first served. Reserve one of the three private baths (¥3,300 for 50 minutes) at check-in too. If you want a last soak, go before breakfast, as the shared baths close at 9:00. Parking costs ¥500 a night.

Claves de la cena

4.6/5

A creative Japanese-Western course brought one dish at a time in the shared Oyama Dining room, which looks over the lit garden. The chef uses fish from the Ariake Sea and Tachibana Bay, Shimabara vegetables and Nagasaki wagyu, and rice cooked in a custom kamado, served on Hasami and Arita ware. Bloggers described karasumi on cream cheese, tiger-fugu sushi, flounder meunière and abalone, with a wagyu fillet as the main. Critics in 2026 found it over-elaborate, or found that the serving staff couldn't explain the fish or sake. All meals are taken in the shared dining room.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

An acidic simple spring containing hydrogen sulphide (a sulphur spring), milky white, piped from Daikyōkan Jigoku in front of the inn. The official site says every bath is fed free-flowing (gensen kakenagashi), and lists metasilicic acid at 103.8 mg.

Privacidad y ambiente

The Kirin-no-yu baths are in a wooden building lit by a skylight. Each side has an indoor bath, an open-air bath (a rock bath and a stone-paved bath, which swap between men and women in the morning and afternoon), a sauna (15:00–22:00) and a cold plunge. Hours are 15:00–24:00 and 5:00–9:00, and towels are provided at the baths. The three private baths open to the air when the windows are slid back. Bloggers had the main bath to themselves, but 2023–2026 reviewers called it compact or 'ordinary', and the open-air bath slightly hot with nowhere to sit. Remove jewellery: the sulphur blackens metal.

Política sobre tatuajes

The official site asks guests with tattoos not to use the large shared baths. The seven fourth-floor rooms have their own onsen bath, and there are three bookable private baths (the site doesn't say whether tattoos are allowed in these).

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Check-in 15:00–18:00 (call if you'll arrive later), check-out 11:00. The whole building is non-smoking, including terraces and e-cigarettes.

  2. 02

Strict dietary rules: dinner is a fixed fish-based course with dashi; vegan, vegetarian and halal meals aren't possible, severe allergies can't be catered for, and other requests must be made at least 7 days ahead. Portion changes and substitutes for dislikes aren't offered.

  3. 03

The inn stands over the jigoku: some floors and the lift are warm from geothermal heat. The sulphur air means no card keys and frequent air-con or TV breakdowns, which the inn warns about in advance.

  4. 04

Families: the inn says its dining room isn't suited to preschool children, who pay a ¥3,300 facility fee and share a bed. Under prefectural rules, children aged about seven and over can't bathe with a parent of the opposite sex in the shared baths.

  5. 05

Cancellation on one major booking site: 10% from 21 days before, 50% from 7 days, 100% from 3 days. There are no barrier-free rooms, but there's a wheelchair-accessible toilet on the ground floor.
