Gora Kadan — the former Kan'in-no-miya imperial villa, Hakone · 663highland / CC BY 2.5

Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

A former imperial villa, Michelin three-key rated, with spring-fed baths and famously attentive staff — superb in the top tiers, but 2026 reviews are more uneven in the standard rooms

Gora Kadan was founded in 1948 in the 1930s summer villa of Imperial Prince Kan'in, and it kept its Michelin three keys in the 2026 selection. Its weakly alkaline simple spring comes from three sources the inn owns, two of them rising in the garden, and guests notice the difference between the source-fed open-air baths in the top rooms and the shared indoor bath, which has water added. Staff are repeatedly praised for anticipating needs — one guest had a Nespresso machine brought to a room that doesn't normally have one — and the free car to Gora Station and nearby museums is a favourite. Japanese guests rate it 4.41 across 143 reviews on one leading site, with the baths highest at 4.60. The tiers matter more than ever: a new top tier of Bettei villas opened with the 254㎡ Shinonome in August 2025, while 2026 reviews of the standard and open-air-bath rooms are noticeably more mixed — about a quarter of 32 reviews posted April–September scored 3.5 or below, citing cleaning lapses in ageing rooms, service that depends on your room attendant, and food that some found declining (others found it better than ever). Plans with dinner and breakfast start from about ¥132,000 for two.

Guía para elegir habitación

Recomendadas

  • Bettei villas — Shinonome (東雲), Akatsuki (暁), Akebono (曙)

The new top tier. Shinonome (opened August 2025) is 254㎡ for up to six, with its own chef's kitchen and cook, a dry sauna and cold plunge, a tea room and a spring-fed stone bath with a view; Akatsuki and Akebono have large rock-garden open-air baths and a steam sauna. 'If you stay here, choose the new Bettei,' one May 2026 reviewer advised.

  • Detached Suite "Hanaka" (離れ「花香」) and the other Hanare

The best-loved of the detached suites: a large stone open-air bath fed directly from the source with no added water, a private garden view and its own Aomori-hiba indoor bath, in 94㎡. Note that meals for the Senshin and Meigetsu suites are served in the Kaiseki Kadan restaurant rather than in the room.

Mejor evitar

  • Standard and open-air-bath Japanese rooms, if you expect flawless luxury

Most 2026 complaints come from these tiers: hair on a table, a razor cap in the bath, dust behind the TV, an unstable toilet, and no coffee machine or tea bags in standard rooms (coffee is charged). One 2025 blogger found their standard room's bath wasn't onsen. The Ajisai and Rindō rooms connect dining room and bedroom only via the terrace or corridor. The building has many steps and thin walls in places.

The Japanese breakfast — one review singled out a carefully prepared sablefish in white miso

Plans include dinner and breakfast, from about ¥132,000 for two on one major site (rates vary by date). Guests staying Tuesday or Thursday–Sunday can swap kaiseki for the new Sushi Kadan counter (eight seats, 18:00 only). The private open-air bath with steam sauna is free once per stay (40 minutes); the bedrock bath is paid and needs booking.

Claves de la cena

4.3/5

Seasonal kaiseki in the Kaiseki Kadan restaurant or, for some rooms, in the room: cherry trout glazed with sakura leaf, amadai steamed with glutinous rice, wagyu fillet in a kudzu crust. Since December 2025 guests can also choose the sushi counter, and seasonal add-ons appear — a matsutake kaiseki for an extra ¥48,400 per person in autumn 2026. Opinion split in 2026: several reviewers praised the food ('the level has gone up a lot'), while others found it declining, served lukewarm, or — in one case — tuna with packaging film still attached.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

A weakly alkaline simple spring from three sources owned by the inn, two of which rise in the garden. The open-air baths in the detached suites are source-fed with no added water; the shared indoor bath has water added. Whether standard rooms' in-room baths use spring water is unclear — ask when booking.

Privacidad y ambiente

Shared indoor and outdoor baths, a pool and a hammam, a free private open-air bath with steam sauna (once per stay, 40 minutes) and a paid bedrock bath (60 minutes, by booking). Guests love the nostalgic main bath and the pool, but a few 2026 reviews mention crowding, poor bath etiquette and debris in the outdoor pool.

Política sobre tatuajes

The official FAQ says guests with large tattoos can't use the main bath or pool; small fashion tattoos are allowed if covered with tape from the front desk. Rooms with their own bath avoid the issue.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Getting here: the Odakyu Romancecar from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto (about 90 minutes), then the Hakone Tozan Railway to Gora (about 40 minutes); the inn's free car meets you at Gora Station and will also run you to nearby museums.

  2. 02

There are now about 41–42 rooms in five tiers — Bettei villas, detached Hanare suites, VIP rooms, rooms with an open-air bath and standard rooms — and the reputation is built on the top tiers.

  3. 03

The inn was founded in 1948 in the former summer villa of Imperial Prince Kan'in and renovated in 1989, which is why it reads as distinctly early-Showa.

  4. 04

Gora Kadan kept its Michelin three keys in 2026 and is linked to Relais & Châteaux — expectations are high, and several 2026 reviewers felt standard-room stays didn't meet them.

  5. 05

One recent reviewer found the prices inflated. Members of one Japanese booking site's top tier found their bedrock-bath perk overlooked or wrongly charged.
