Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

A small, warmly run sukiya-style inn outside Morioka, rated 4.6 by over 500 Japanese guests for its staff and monthly Iwate kaiseki — the free-flowing sulphur water is best in the few rooms with their own open-air bath, since the shared baths are small, recirculated and never swap

Shikitei is a 22-room sukiya-style inn at the back of Tsunagi Onsen, a spring that legend says Minamoto no Yoshiie found about 900 years ago, naming it after the stone where a horse was tied — the stone still stands nearby. The water is a soft, alkaline simple sulphur spring (pH 9.1, 65.3°C), sold as a 'skin-beautifying' bath. Japanese guests rate the inn 4.6 across 531 reviews on one major site (service 4.8, dinner 4.7, rooms only 4.2) and 4.61 across 529 on another. They praise attentive, friendly staff and an okami who sees every guest off, a monthly kaiseki built on Sanriku seafood and Iwate beef (a 2023 blogger singled out the signature onsen-steamed Iwate beef), fresh flowers in the corridors, and unusually thorough care for babies and toddlers. The real draw is the handful of rooms with a free-flowing open-air bath; the shared baths, one per gender with an outdoor tub, are listed by a booking site as recirculated and filtered, and guests find them small. Complaints, dated: a December 2023 blogger sent back sashimi as not fresh and found the special room's bath screened and dim; an August 2024 blogger found its Western bedroom far smaller than the photos; in 2026 reviewers mention ageing washbasins and toilets, a room facing a wall, thin towels, dirty windows, a cramped lounge and early 10:00 check-out, and one March 2026 guest found staff listless and dishes cleared too fast. Two-meal stays run about ¥18,000–30,000+ per person.

Guía para elegir habitación

Recomendadas

  • Open-air bath rooms — 10 tatami, or the 8-tatami rooms added in 2022

Each has a free-flowing open-air bath plus a separate indoor unit bath. 2026 reviewers say these baths make the stay: a September 2026 couple barely used the shared bath, and a July 2026 guest found the water at 39°C whenever they got in. Notes: the source runs about 60°C and one August 2026 guest found the cold tap slow to cool it; a 2020 blogger noted the open-air bath has no washing area and the indoor bath isn't onsen; a July 2026 guest wanted handrails and a second chair. A 2022 connecting room (10 tatami with open-air bath plus a twin room, up to 7) suits families.

  • Special Room (12.5 tatami plus a twin bedroom, free-flowing open-air bath, up to 8)

The top room, popular with three-generation families. A December 2023 blogger found it spacious with meals in a private room overlooking the garden; a September 2026 guest loved it. But the December 2023 blogger found the bath behind a fixed reed blind and dim, unlike the bright website photos, and the pillows too soft, and an August 2024 group found the Western bedroom 'much smaller' than expected.

Mejor evitar

  • Standard rooms (8, 10 and 12 tatami) and the bed rooms

All rooms share the same older building: a September 2026 reviewer was shocked by the dated washbasin and toilet, and a 2020 blogger found the bathrooms old and the view over the car park. A May 2026 guest's room faced a wall at the back. The 12-tatami rooms have a toilet but no in-room bath. A September 2026 guest found the big windows dirty. The three bed rooms are 10-tatami rooms with two Simmons beds.

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.4/5

A Japanese set breakfast with Iwate hitomebore rice, yose-dofu tofu, additive-free Iwaizumi yogurt and natural apple juice from a Morioka orchard — well liked (4.5 and 4.69 on the two sites)

Call before boarding the bus at Morioka Station and the inn will meet you at the Tsunagi Onsen stop. Don't turn up early: check-in is 15:00, and in September 2026 a guest arriving at 14:30 was told to wait in the car. The shared baths are open 24 hours and the inn takes no day bathers. Ask for an open-air bath room early — there are only 22 rooms.

Claves de la cena

4.4/5

A monthly kaiseki by head chef Wataru Chiba, built on a dashi of Makurazaki bonito, flying fish and Sanriku kombu, served in private rooms, a partitioned hall or, on some plans, in your room (last start 19:00). Expect Sanriku sea squirt, scallops and abalone, hitsumi or seafood hotpots and a beef course — onsen-steamed Iwate beef in 2023, yaki-shabu in 2026 — with Maezawa beef steak or shabu-shabu plans. Blogs in 2023 found it delicious; a December 2023 blogger sent back stale tuna sashimi, and a 2020 blogger found the food pre-plated, dried out and served too fast. Drinks are on the pricey side.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

Tsunagi Onsen's blended spring (Shikō no Yu and Shin-Zuikō no Yu): a simple sulphur spring, alkaline (pH 9.1), 65.3°C, with a faint sulphur smell. The inn says the in-room open-air baths are 100% free-flowing; a booking site lists the shared baths as recirculated and filtered. Rooms' indoor unit baths are not onsen.

Privacidad y ambiente

One bath per gender, each with an indoor bath and an outdoor tub facing the hillside (men on the 2nd floor, women on the 3rd), open 24 hours and never swapped — 2026 reviewers would like them swapped, and the women's outdoor bath looks onto a small waterfall. They're small for the inn's size: one July 2026 reviewer counted five showers and a tub for about ten. No sauna and no private (kashikiri) baths; bath towels are provided at the baths.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Check-in 15:00, check-out 10:00 — several guests found check-out too early to enjoy their room bath.

  2. 02

Morioka's new accommodation tax of ¥200 per person per night applies from 1 October 2026, paid at the inn and not included in online prices.

  3. 03

The building is old: guests consistently note dated fittings, though most say it's spotlessly kept.

  4. 04

Families with babies are well served: the inn is a certified 'Welcome Baby' inn, with corner guards, baby bath sets, children's chairs and tableware, toys and goldfish to feed.

  5. 05

Access without a car: Iwate-ken Kōtsū bus from stop 10 at Morioka Station's east exit (about 35 minutes; services are limited), then an 8-minute walk or the inn's pickup; 30 free parking spaces for drivers.
