Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

Hakone's famously hard-to-book inn: 20 rooms, each with a terrace and open-air bath hanging over the Hayakawa gorge — but the room baths are recirculated, and 2026 reviews report long check-in waits, ageing rooms and slipping food

Hakone Ginyu is the inn Japanese travel blogs call the hardest in Japan to book: 20 rooms stacked down the Hayakawa gorge below Miyanoshita, every one with an open terrace, an open-air bath facing the valley and a separate dining room, linked by tatami corridors you walk in white tabi. Bookings are taken by phone from 9:00, a year ahead to the day, though cancellations now reappear on one booking site. The water is the inn's own sodium chloride spring (pH 8.4, about 53°C), but the inn's published bath data shows the in-room baths are recirculated, heated and disinfected, and the two shared baths — Tsukishiro, with its 'infinity' edge over the valley, and Tsukine — mix free-flowing and recirculated water; only the spa's private bath is 100% free-flowing. Japanese guests rate it 4.36 across 72 reviews on one leading site, with baths at 4.67, and bloggers from 2023 to 2025 loved the views and the lavish in-room kaiseki and breakfast. But the 2026 reviews split sharply: alongside praise for surprise celebrations and friendly staff, several guests reported 20–30-minute check-in waits, musty smells, worn furniture, a slimy room-bath floor, insects on the lower floors, few towels and free drinks, and food that has lost its sparkle. Rates run about ¥42,500–66,700 per person with two meals.

Guía para elegir habitación

Recomendadas

  • Tsuki (月) rooms on the ground floor — e.g. Katsura (桂) and Nanaya (七夜)

100㎡ Japanese rooms with a wide terrace, a rock open-air bath with jacuzzi and a separate indoor bath; a blogger who stayed in 2024 and 2025 found Katsura far larger than an upper-floor room and recommends the new-green season and a ground-floor room, and a July 2026 guest called Nanaya's the best in-room bath they had used. The Western suite Fūkō is 80㎡. One April 2026 guest on this floor was bitten by a centipede — insects are a ground-floor risk.

  • Keifū (渓風), the single Kaze (風) room on the fourth floor

100㎡ with an indoor bath, two toilets and wide views (June and September 2026), though without the jacuzzi of the ground-floor rooms and with stink bugs at night in autumn.

Mejor evitar

  • Sora (空, 2F) and Hoshi (星, 3F) rooms, the cheapest types

68㎡ with a shower booth instead of an indoor tub. A February 2023 guest in a third-floor room found the bath view not fully open, creaking tatami and only one key; a 2023 guest at the far end of the second floor found the view 'so-so'. The maisonette Seishuku's extra bedding and sofa were worn in August 2026.

La cocina a fondo

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.1/5

In-room Japanese (yudōfu, horse mackerel or salmon) or Western with eggs to order, at 8:00 or 9:30 — mostly praised, though one 2026 guest found the rice microwaved and a large group's pre-set breakfast had gone cold

Call at 9:00 exactly a year ahead, or watch one booking site for released cancellations. Don't arrive before 14:00 — even on time, several 2026 guests waited 20–30 minutes in the bar. In-room drinks are limited to tea, water and a small cider plus one bar ticket. Drivers: the entrance slope from Route 1 is steep enough to catch low cars (free valet, 15 spaces).

Claves de la cena

4.1/5

A monthly kaiseki served in your room's dining room at 18:00, or teppanyaki at the Yūan counter (opened around 2025, with an Ise-ebi option); dessert may be served at the ground-floor bar. Bloggers in 2023–2025 described elaborate, abundant dinners ('more dishes than we could finish', a surprise wagyu sushi) and recommend the late-night ramen. In 2026 opinion split: dobin-mushi and creative tableware drew praise and allergies were handled, but other guests found a steak cold inside, nothing memorable, or 'none of the old glamour'.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

The inn's own sodium chloride spring (pH 8.4, about 53°C) piped from two wells. According to the inn's published data, the in-room baths are recirculated, heated and disinfected (topped up with fresh spring water); the shared baths combine free-flowing and recirculated water; only the GinyuSpa private bath is 100% free-flowing.

Privacidad y ambiente

Every room has an open-air bath facing the gorge, usable at any time. Two shared baths on the top floor, Tsukishiro (with the 'infinity bath' edge) and Tsukine, each with a stone bath, outdoor tub and low-temperature sauna, swap between men and women at 22:00. Guests note narrow washing and changing areas, no lockers, and one lukewarm outdoor tub. The spa's free-flowing private bath (30 minutes) is for guests booking a treatment.

Política sobre tatuajes

No policy found on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the inn. Every room has its own open-air bath.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Check-in 14:00, check-out 11:00. Bookings by phone only on the official site, opening at 9:00 a year ahead; year-end dates open on 1 September.

  2. 02

Cancellation: 30% from 3 days before, 50% the day before, 100% on the day.

  3. 03

The entrance, lobby and shared baths are on the top floor and rooms below, linked by a lift; the inn describes itself as barrier-free and has a wheelchair-accessible room.

  4. 04

Children are welcome: preschoolers stay free (meals and futon extra), primary-school children pay 50–70%.

  5. 05

Several 2026 guests reported upkeep problems — musty smells, worn fittings, a slimy bath floor, few towels — so the recent experience may not match older glowing reviews.
