Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

Kinosaki's grand old ryokan wins on service and crab — just know the private baths aren't onsen

Japanese guests describe Nishimuraya Honkan as the classic Kinosaki splurge, and the scores back that up: 4.81 across 68 reviews on 一休 (food 4.91, service 4.84), and 91 out of 100 from 30 responses on JTB, where service and breakfast both score 96 but rooms only 82. Almost every 2025–2026 review praises the staff's greetings and attentiveness — one couple had early transport arranged within minutes when their plans changed, and guests were looked after when snow stopped the trains — along with seasonal kaiseki built around matsuba snow crab and Tajima beef, spotless rooms and real care for older guests. The architecture is part of the draw: the Hirata-kan wing was built in 1960 by the sukiya master Masaya Hirata. Rooms, the long-standing weak point, have been renovated in stages since 2021, and after the whole inn closed from 24 June to 28 August 2026, six more were remade as Japanese-Western rooms and individual air conditioning was installed throughout. The caveat most foreign visitors won't expect: the official room pages confirm that in-room baths use heated plain water, not hot-spring water, even in suites with their own open-air tub; the onsen is in the three large baths and the town's public baths. Complaints are fewer but real: stairs and an ageing building that are hard on older guests, a sewer smell in an older room (June 2026), a pre-arrival allergy message that went unanswered, and the smell of an in-room crab dinner lingering into the night. It has held two MICHELIN Keys every year since the Japan Key selection began in 2024.

Guía para elegir habitación

Recomendadas

  • Hirata-kan suites (Ginsen, Horai, Kangetsu)

The three suites in the 1960 wing designed by sukiya master Masaya Hirata, each looking onto a central rock garden. Horai has a cypress open-air bath and Kangetsu a 16-tatami main room, terrace, open-air bath and private garden; Ginsen was renovated in September 2023 with beds and a hinoki semi-open-air bath. A 2026 guest paid just under ¥200,000 for two in Horai.

  • New Japanese-Western rooms (Ume, Hagi, Katsura)

Opened in August 2026 after the summer renovation. Ume has a semi-open-air bath, twin beds and an earthen-floor area, Hagi has twin beds, and Katsura adds a separate dining room. Too new for many reviews, but the simplest way to combine beds and modern comfort with the old inn's service.

  • Other renovated rooms with beds (Kumoi, Matsu, Sakura, Botan, Yamabuki)

Kumoi was redone in November 2022 with a king bed, and Matsu, Sakura, Botan and the universal-design Yamabuki in July 2024. Recent guests single out the renovated rooms for praise; Yamabuki is the one to ask about for anyone who struggles with steps.

  • Honjin-no-ma (special room with open-air bath)

A large suite, renovated in November 2021 — a 15-tatami main room plus a 5-tatami veranda, a 6-tatami bedroom, an 8-tatami dining room and a walk-in closet — with a hinoki open-air bath facing the hillside. A 2024 guest paid ¥223,630 for two with meals, using a booking-site member benefit.

Mejor evitar

  • Any room booked for its 'onsen' bath

The official room pages confirm that in-room and private-space baths use heated plain water, not hot-spring water. If bathing in onsen is the point, plan around the ryokan's three large baths and the town's public baths rather than paying extra for a room tub.

  • Older, unrenovated rooms

Not every room has been redone: in June 2026 a guest reported a sewer smell in an older room, and the stairs and age of the building can be hard on older guests. Ask for a renovated room when booking. Earlier complaints about cold winter rooms predate the individual air conditioning installed in 2026.

  • Botan

Renovated in 2024 and generally liked, but a 2026 guest found the vanity counter set too high and the floor heating running in June.

La cocina a fondo

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.6/5

Served in the Senrei-no-ma hall — re-floored in wood, with partitions between tables — rather than in the room: a choice of Japanese breakfast (many small dishes, rice or rice porridge and miso soup made with Tajima seaweed and Kinosaki tofu) or a Western breakfast that one returning guest found far better than a decade earlier

If you'd rather not have crab in your room — reviewers note the smell lingers afterwards — book a plan with dinner at Sanpo Nishimuraya Honten, the group's restaurant next door, or at Ricca, the Italian restaurant in the sister Nishimuraya Hotel Shogetsutei. Crab-season plans run from 7 November to 31 March.

Claves de la cena

4.8/5

Dinner is seasonal kaiseki anchored in local seafood and Tajima beef, usually served in the room course by course, and the crab and beef are praised in almost every 2025–2026 review. A 2025 spring menu ran from crab sushi and steamed matsuba crab to crab sashimi, Tajima beef, crab grilled at the table and a sakura-shrimp clay-pot rice; a 2024 guest added a whole live matsuba crab for ¥19,800, served as sashimi legs and a grilled body. Another guest remembers the rice being cooked at the table in a traditional kettle, and describes the seasoning as restrained, letting the ingredients lead.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

Kinosaki hot-spring water in the three large baths, which the official site marks as heated and with water added. The official room pages confirm that in-room and private-space baths — including the open-air tubs in suites — use heated plain water, not onsen.

Privacidad y ambiente

There are three large baths: Kichi-no-yu, finished in hinoki, and the Chinese-style Fuku-no-yu, each with its own open-air section, plus Nao-no-yu, an indoor bath in the Hirata wing facing the courtyard. They are open 15:00–24:30 and 5:30–10:30 and swap between men and women, so guests recommend trying more than one; a repeat guest notes they are consistently clean.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Children must be 10 or older (a rule in place since April 2024).

  2. 02

The whole inn closed from 24 June to 28 August 2026 for renovation: six rooms were remade as Japanese-Western rooms with beds, and individual air conditioning was installed throughout. Reviews complaining of cold winter rooms date from before this.

  3. 03

Check-in is from 15:00 (the official pages give a last check-in of 17:00 or 18:00, so aim to arrive by 17:00–18:00) and check-out is at 11:00. Rooms with open-air baths stock Guerlain amenities; some guests also mention POLA products.

  4. 04

Expect roughly ¥88,000–167,200 per person per night with two meals, two sharing (JTB, 2026); a 2026 guest paid just under ¥200,000 for two in Horai. The official site says booking direct saves ¥33,000 per room for two.

  5. 05

In-room baths use heated plain water, not onsen, as the official room pages confirm; the hot-spring water is in the large baths.
