Hoshino Resorts' Hakone-Yumoto inn, reopened in August 2025 full of yosegi marquetry: every room faces the river, there's a free teahouse and a fun craft class — but the shared bath is a single heated, chlorinated semi-open-air tub, and most rooms have only a shower
KAI Hakone sits on the old Tōkaidō road above the Sukumo river. It reopened in August 2025 after about a year's renovation, and all 34 rooms now face the river and Mt Yusaka. They are fitted with Hakone yosegi marquetry and art based on the gear of Edo-era travellers. Since reopening it has rated 4.4 across 52 reviews on one major Japanese booking site, with rooms at 4.7, dinner, service and cleanliness at 4.6, and the bath lowest at 4.2. Bloggers from 2025 and 2026 loved the new courtyard teahouse, which serves free tea and dango in the afternoon and herbal tea and shochu at night. They also loved the 40-minute yosegi 'zuku-biki' class, where you plane wood shavings and turn them into a photo frame; one couple called it the best activity at any KAI. Dinner is a 'Meiji beef hotpot' kaiseki that opens with a box of small dishes and ends with thick, miso-simmered beef and a black-bean tiramisu. Most guests rate it highly, but some find the marbled beef heavy. The weak point is the water. The official site lists a sodium chloride spring, and the booking site marks it as heated. A March 2026 guest reported water added, heating, recirculation and chlorine, and two 2026 reviewers complained of a strong chlorine smell. Each side has one roofed open-air hinoki tub and a sauna, with no indoor bath, so winter is chilly. Standard rooms have a shower only. Other complaints: lobby waits at check-in, and dinner staff hard to find when you want a refill.

Hakone-gokochi Suite or Western room with open-air bath
The only way to get your own onsen bath: the suites are over 110 m², with an open-air bath and an 'Ishi-no-ma' stone lounge for cooling off afterwards, and the Western rooms have an open terrace with an open-air bath. Worth it in winter, when the shared bath has no indoor tub. Expect well above the standard room rates.
Japanese-Western room with 'riverside living room' (top floor, 51 m²)
A 2026 couple found it bigger than its 51 m², with a counter looking down on the river, a large L-shaped sofa, a separate bedroom and yosegi pieces you can use; a solo blogger in August 2025 loved reading at the window. From about ¥89,100 for two with meals on one booking site in October 2026. It has a shower only, no bathtub.

Standard Japanese rooms (2–5 guests)
The cheapest rooms (from about ¥75,900 for two with meals) also have a shower booth only, so you rely on the shared bath. Guest rooms are in a separate wing from the lobby and dining room, which an August 2026 guest found awkward for older relatives; one 2025 guest couldn't cool the room even at 18°C, and a 2025 guest found the low bed mattress too soft.

Consenso sobre el desayuno
4.3/5Local Japanese breakfast built around a steaming seiro basket of Odawara fish cakes and vegetables, with grilled fish — or a Western breakfast (not served 1–3 January)
Book the 17:30 dinner slot when you reserve; a 2026 couple who forgot got 19:30. Arrive near 14:30 to grab a ticket for an early yosegi class, and come to the courtyard teahouse before 17:00 for dango. A free shared taxi to Hakone-Yumoto Station runs at check-out if you book by noon the day before.
Claves de la cena
4.4/5Served at 17:30 or 19:30 in semi-private rooms. The 'Meiji beef hotpot' kaiseki arrives first in a wooden box modelled on a traveller's luggage case. In 2025–2026 bloggers praised an amazake vichyssoise with sea urchin, generous sashimi and the black-bean tiramisu. The thick, miso-based beef split opinion: one 2026 blogger found the marbled meat too heavy to finish, another called the flavour strong, and a February 2026 guest found it spat fat. Several guests said staff were rarely nearby when they wanted rice or tea refilled, and a 2025 guest found the food for a two-year-old was just plain rice and clear soup.
Onsen y bienestar: la realidad
Hakone-Yumoto Onsen, a sodium chloride spring according to the official site; the booking site lists it as heated. A March 2026 guest reported water added, heating, recirculation and chlorine, and guests in February and May 2026 complained of a strong chlorine smell that lingered on their hands.
Two shared baths that swap between men and women at night and morning (14:30–1:00 and 5:00–10:00). Each has one roofed hinoki tub open on one side to the river and Mt Yusaka, plus a sauna, but no indoor tub — the room guide suggests washing your hair in your room in cold weather. Guests love the view, but several found the bath small, one side narrower, and the walk outside cold in winter. The small lounge afterwards offers ice lollies, Kataura lemon water and barley tea.
Hoshino Resorts doesn't ban tattoos outright, but its group policy, linked from KAI Hakone's bath page, says staff may refuse use of the large bath if they judge other guests could feel afraid. Book a room with its own open-air bath to be safe.
Advertencias y matices locales
- 01
Check-in 14:30, check-out 11:00. Guests in February and August 2026 waited a long time in the lobby before being shown to their rooms.
- 02
There is no pick-up from the station. Take the Orange Bus (B route, ¥200, cash only, no change given) or the local bus to the Kuzuhara stop (a solo blogger found it ran every 30 minutes), then walk down a cobbled slope that is hard work with a suitcase. Taxis at Hakone-Yumoto can be very hard to get; the inn suggests about ¥5,000 from Odawara. Roads are narrow; parking is free.
- 03
Children are welcome, and under-sevens can share a bed. Families can make it lively: a February 2026 guest repeatedly shared the open-air bath with children swimming in it, and a July 2026 guest noticed some daytime noise.
- 04
One dog-friendly room (up to two dogs of 20 kg or less), sold only on the official site. The whole building is non-smoking apart from a smoking area.
- 05
On the major Japanese booking sites it is listed only on Jalan, not on Rakuten Travel or Ikyu, so most Japanese reviews come from that one site.
