Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

A 350-year-old, 15-room inn on Kinosaki's willow-lined canal with its own craft brewery, in-room kaiseki and two public baths on its doorstep — but its own baths are small and recirculated, and the 'semi-open-air' baths in the two special rooms aren't hot-spring water

Yamamotoya was founded in the Edo period and describes itself as one of Kinosaki's oldest inns, now about 350 years old: a three-storey wooden building whose basic design dates from the town's rebuilding after the 1925 North Tajima earthquake, on the willow-lined canal that only a dozen or so of Kinosaki's roughly 80 inns face. Yanagi-yu is 40m away and Ichi-no-yu 50m, and every stay includes a free pass to the town's public baths. The inn also brews Kinosaki Beer — four all-malt styles, including a 'crab beer' — served at a lobby bar and brought to your room. A renovation finished in July 2024 turned two ground-floor rooms into special rooms with a semi-open-air bath and redid the women's bath and the exterior. Japanese guests rate it 4.7 across 471 reviews on one leading site (bath 4.3, rooms 4.8) and 4.65 across 522 on another. Travellers from 2023 to 2026 praise the canal views, the friendly, unobtrusive staff, the dinners with Tajima beef, abalone or tagged Matsuba crab, and the rice-porridge breakfast. The catches: the inn's own baths are recirculated and small, and get cramped when other guests are in; the special rooms' semi-open-air baths are not hot-spring water; and 2025–2026 reviews mention weak shower pressure, few amenities, a short room-service menu, few sakes and a car park across the river. Two-meal plans ran about ¥25,000–30,000+ per person in 2025–2026.

Recomendadas

  • Japanese room with a river view (大谿川を望むリバービュー, 8 tatami)

The classic Yamamotoya room: windows onto the willows and the canal, where you hear the clack of geta as people walk to the public baths. A February 2023 travelogue found the 8-tatami room spacious, with a big window and a desk, and a September 2026 couple loved the willow view and the sound of geta. Up to four guests.

  • Special rooms 121 and 122 (特別室, 10 tatami, semi-open-air bath facing a courtyard garden)

Former annexe rooms on the ground floor, rebuilt in early 2024: quieter, away from the street, with a small garden and the only shampoo and body soap in the rooms. A June 2026 guest in 122 (the inner one) was very happy with the size and cleanliness but thought 121 might feel more open; an April 2026 guest found the old building well renovated and the floor heating warm. No canal view, and the room bath is not hot-spring water.

Mejor evitar

  • Connecting room (和洋室, 18.5 tatami) and family room (大部屋, 15 tatami)

Made for families and groups (up to six or seven) — the connecting room has four single beds plus two futons — but the inn doesn't take children under five. According to the town's tourism association, only six of the 15 rooms have their own bathroom, and a 2023 visitor noted that rooms without a garden feel smaller. Ask which room you're getting with the 'leave it to us' (おまかせ) plans.

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.4/5

A gentle Japanese set breakfast — red-rice porridge, grilled fish, dashimaki egg, tofu and freshly scooped yuba — at 8:00 or 8:30; the porridge is the dish reviewers mention most, though refills are plain rice only

Book on the official site for in-room meals (parties of four or fewer) and a free glass of Kinosaki Beer or a soft drink, and take a glass up after the bath — the inn will bring a glass or a mug to your room, and the bar by the lobby opens until 22:00. Free shuttle from the station until 18:00; you can leave bags any time before 15:00 check-in.

Claves de la cena

4.5/5

A Japanese full course from a head chef of 40 years, served in your room or the dining room, with tempura fried to match your pace. Plans add Tajima beef steak, live abalone grilled in butter, or in winter (from 6 November) tagged Matsuba crab from nearby ports. An August 2026 dinner had crab, hamo shabu-shabu, sashimi, chawanmushi and a Tajima steak; a 2023 traveller who doesn't eat beef got abalone instead. Most 2025–2026 reviews call it delicious and filling; one May 2026 guest found it 'normal' with modest portions, and one in October 2026 wanted more sake choices.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

Kinosaki's shared town hot spring; one Japanese booking site lists the inn's baths as recirculated and filtered (循環ろ過), not free-flowing. Reviewers say the inn's in-house baths are limited in size because the town limits how much spring water each inn gets, and that the semi-open-air baths in the two special rooms are not filled with hot-spring water.

Privacidad y ambiente

Two small in-house baths — men's with an outdoor barrel tub, women's with a square masu tub, an outdoor tub and a Mirable shower head — plus the reservable semi-open-air private bath Sen'yū (5 slots a day, 40 minutes, ¥1,100). Several sources say the baths are open around the clock; one booking site says until midnight. Guests find them clean and often empty, but small, cramped when shared, and with weak shower pressure on the men's side (September 2026). Most people use the public baths: a free pass covers your stay, and Yanagi-yu and Ichi-no-yu are a minute's walk.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Check-in 15:00–18:00, check-out 10:00 — earlier than some would like. The public-bath pass starts at check-in, and bath tax and pass fees are settled at check-out.

  2. 02

Since April 2024 the inn doesn't accept children under five; five- and six-year-olds pay 50%, primary-school children 70%.

  3. 03

Parking is free (10 spaces) but some distance away — a November 2025 guest said it was across the river. You unload in front of the inn first.

  4. 04

Kō-no-yu, one of the seven public baths, is closed for repairs from 11 May to 30 October 2026 (planned); Mandara-yu opens on its usual closing day while the work is going on.

  5. 05

In 2023 mealtimes were chosen at check-in (dinner at 17:00, 17:30 or 18:00). In-room service is basic — few amenities, no drinks service after the bath and a short room-service menu that ends early — so one January 2026 guest suggested bringing your own drinks from the nearby convenience store.
