Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

A barefoot, tatami-floored 'modern tōji' retreat where every room has a free-flowing open-air bath and dinner is a light, local kaiseki — adults only, Michelin-keyed, and among western Japan's best-rated inns

Otozure opened in 2006 as the annex of the big Ōtani Sansō next door, and it's a different world: just 18 rooms on an 8,000㎡ site, walnut and black-cherry interiors, tatami corridors you walk barefoot, and a 'modern tōji' (hot-spring retreat) concept. Every room has an open-air bath of the inn's alkaline simple spring, free-flowing (heated); the inn holds a MICHELIN Key for the third year running in 2026. Japanese guests rate it 4.87 across 50 reviews on one leading site — with satisfaction at 4.92 — and 4.7 across 312 on another. They praise the 'three-local' kaiseki at the Un'yū restaurant (Senzaki fish, Hagi white miso, charcoal-grilled Chōshū or Iwakuni wagyu, fugu in season), lightly seasoned and served one course at a time — one reviewer found it 'far better than restaurants in Kyoto said to be impossible to book' — plus warm service, the Bar OTOZURE and quiet large baths that are almost always empty. Know before you book: no children under 13; the shared baths are recirculated, so the real onsen is in your room; the cheapest maisonettes have steep stairs and some noise and privacy issues; one garden-side room looked only onto roofs; and the town around it feels quiet to the point of run-down. Official rates start at ¥46,200 per person with two meals; a couple paid about ¥67,100 each for a corner room in 2024.

Recomendadas

  • Type A — corner Japanese-Western room (114㎡, terrace)

The most consistently praised: a bright corner room with a 10-mat living area, a separate bedroom, two toilets, a shower room leading to the open-air bath and a curved terrace over the water garden. A May 2024 couple paid ¥134,200 for two with meals and found it 'much brighter' than the F type they'd stayed in before. From about ¥62,700 per person officially.

  • Types C and D — mountain-side room and maisonette (107–139㎡)

Good reports from 2023 to 2026, sleeping up to four. One 2023 guest paid over ¥130,000 on a booking site for a C room. The B garden-side rooms are similar in size and one blogger says one of only two rooms where in-room dinner is possible — but a 2025 reviewer saw 'only roofs' from the window, so ask about the view.

Mejor evitar

  • Types F and G — the 69㎡ maisonettes, if you're older or a light sleeper

The cheapest rooms (from ¥46,200 per person), with a home theatre upstairs and still 'plenty luxurious', a 2022 guest felt. But a 2026 reviewer found the stairs 'very steep for older guests', a 2025 guest clearly heard the neighbouring room, and another found the wooden blind by the bed wouldn't close, leaving the bath area visible. Electric wheelchairs can't be used on the tatami corridors.

A Japanese or Western set at Un'yū — nodoguro dried overnight, dashimaki omelette, rice cooked in a kamado-san pot — or the buffet in a private room at Ōtani Sansō

Book the taxi plans from Yamaguchi Ube Airport or Shin-Yamaguchi Station at least six days ahead if you aren't driving. Your stay includes access to Ōtani Sansō's larger baths next door and a ticket for the town's Ontō public bath.

Claves de la cena

4.7/5

Dinner at Un'yū (17:30 or 19:30, about 90 minutes), at tables or the counter, follows a monthly 'three-local' menu: kuruma prawns with Yamaguchi vegetables, Hagi white-miso soup with Iwakuni lotus root, sashimi split into 'from the sea' and 'from the mountains', tiger-pufferfish sashimi and karaage in season, charcoal-grilled Chōshū or Iwakuni wagyu with sanshō miso, and Hagi rice — with the inn's own junmai ginjō 'Otozure'. A teppanyaki option exists too. Criticisms: a noisy neighbouring table and slow pacing (2025), voices echoing in the dining room, one guest finding it a little salty, and one guest first seated in a viewless booth.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

An alkaline simple spring. The in-room open-air baths are free-flowing (100% spring water, heated); the shared large baths are recirculated and filtered — staff told one 2026 guest that only the room baths are free-flowing.

Privacidad y ambiente

Every room has its own open-air bath — deep, so the inn lends step stools if needed. Otozure's own men's and women's large baths (indoor and open-air, a lie-down bath and a stone sauna; 6:00–24:00, closed 11:00–14:00 for cleaning) are almost always empty, guests say. Guests can also use Ōtani Sansō's larger baths with jacuzzi and saunas, and the inn's spa.

Política sobre tatuajes

No policy on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the inn. With an open-air bath in every room, you never need to share.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

No children under 13 (the sister inn Ōtani Sansō does accept children).

  2. 02

Getting there: free shuttle by reservation from JR Nagato-Yumoto Station, about 5 minutes, or fixed-price taxi plans (Yamaguchi Ube Airport ¥16,000, Shin-Yamaguchi Station ¥13,000 per car). A 2024 guest found the JR Mine Line suspended after the 2023 floods — check before relying on it. Free parking with valet.

  3. 03

    Check-in 14:00–18:00, check-out 11:00.

  4. 04

Not barrier-free: tatami corridors throughout, no electric wheelchairs, steep stairs in the maisonettes.

  5. 05

Recent reviewers mention weak amenities, a firm bed, Ōtani Sansō's shop closing at 19:00, and a quiet, somewhat run-down town around the inn.
