Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

Hoshino Resorts' craft-filled anchor of a revived onsen town: walkable riverside evenings, free post-bath sake and fugu in winter — but a small bath, heated water and some lacklustre 2026 meals

KAI Nagato opened in March 2020 as the centrepiece of Nagato-Yumoto's town makeover, which Hoshino Resorts planned for the city after visitor numbers halved; its café was the first in the KAI brand open to non-guests. The 40 rooms take the idea of a feudal lord's tea house and fill it with Yamaguchi crafts — Hagi ware, Tokuji washi, Ouchi lacquer and Hagi glass. Japanese bloggers love what surrounds it: riverside walks, bamboo steps and night lighting, free sake, summer-orange juice and ice lollies after the bath, an ink-grinding 'brush play' session on Akama inkstones, and staff who take your photo and mark birthdays. It rates 4.5 across 824 reviews on one major site, with rooms and cleanliness (4.7) the strongest scores and the bath (4.3) the weakest. The water is an alkaline simple spring at about 39°C: guests report that the warm indoor bath is straight from the source while the hot one is heated, and the large bath feels small. Dinner is a tile-grilled kaiseki with squid, summer orange and a little fugu, and from November to February you can upgrade to a full fugu course. Recent complaints: in summer 2026 guests found dinner had no real main dish, breakfast thin and some food cold, and the August holidays crowded with children.

Guía para elegir habitación

Recomendadas

  • Special room with open-air bath (annex 1st floor, about 72 m²)

Four rooms with a courtyard garden, an open-air bath, a sunken kotatsu-style desk and two washbasins — the pick if you want privacy. A 2025 solo blogger in a special room loved it. Expect roughly ¥72,000–96,000 for two with meals.

  • Japanese room with open-air bath (annex 2nd floor, 48 m²)

A Shigaraki-ware tub on the terrace for less than the special rooms (about ¥85,700 for two with meals on a Friday in October 2024). But the annex 2nd floor has no lift — a December 2023 guest had to carry their suitcase up the stairs.

Mejor evitar

  • Standard Japanese room for three

The cheapest rooms have a shower booth only, no bathtub. Beds sit on a raised tatami platform (a step up that one 2026 guest disliked, with little barrier-free provision), and the mattresses are soft.

La cocina a fondo

Consenso sobre el desayuno

3.8/5

Local breakfast served in wooden tubs — mirin-dried mackerel, squid shumai and Tokuji miso soup — or a Western breakfast

Book the free early-morning walk to Sumiyoshi Shrine and the Friday–Sunday night 'Akari-michi' lantern walk at the front desk; the inn's own café serves dorayaki 14:30–17:00. The fugu upgrade (from about ¥5,100 per person, November–February) must be booked five days ahead.

Claves de la cena

4.0/5

Two seatings (17:30 or 19:30) in a dining room with semi-private seating. The tile-grilled kaiseki features squid, summer orange and fugu — even in September a blogger got fugu and chicken on the tile and fugu-skin rice. The winter fugu upgrade (sashimi with three sauces, fried fugu, a citrus hotpot and porridge) left a 2024 blogger very satisfied. Portions are generous. But 2026 reviewers say dinner lacked a real main course, breakfast was thin, dried fish and toast arrived cold and courses felt rushed, and a 2023 guest felt the direct-booking plan cost more for a downgrade.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

Alkaline simple spring, slippery and soft. The official site calls it a free-flowing inn, but guests report the source is only about 39°C: the warm indoor bath is straight from the source, the hot indoor bath is heated, and a 2021 stay reported the open-air bath as heated, diluted and recirculated.

Privacidad y ambiente

One large bath for each sex, with no swapping: a hot and a warm indoor bath (soak hot first, then warm) and an open-air bath, guests only, open 14:30–1:00 and 5:00–10:00. No sauna. Several guests found it small. Afterwards the lounge serves free sake, summer-orange juice and ice lollies. In-room baths: the official site lists the special rooms' baths as onsen, but an August 2026 guest in an open-air-bath room wrote that the water was heated, unlike the large bath — ask when booking.

Política sobre tatuajes

Hoshino Resorts doesn't ban tattoos outright, but its group policy says staff may refuse use of the large bath if they judge other guests could feel afraid. No cover-sticker rule is mentioned for KAI Nagato — book a room with its own bath to be safe.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

    Check-in 14:30, check-out 11:00 (bloggers in 2022 and 2024 reported 15:00 and 12:00 — confirm for your plan).

  2. 02

There is no hotel shuttle: it's 15 minutes on foot from Nagato-Yumoto Station, about an hour by car or jumbo taxi from JR Shin-Yamaguchi, and an airport bus from Yamaguchi Ube runs Friday to Monday only. Free parking; studless tyres recommended December to mid-March.

  3. 03

Children are welcome (under-sevens can share a bed, with kids' menus), but the summer holidays are busy with families.

  4. 04

One dog-friendly room takes up to two dogs of 20 kg or less. The building is non-smoking apart from a smoking area.

  5. 05

The Otozure-river walk is the highlight — rain or summer heat can cut it short.
