Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

A big, good-value Kumano Kodo base whose river-level open-air bath you share in a bathing wrap, with all-you-can-drink beer and sake and unlimited grilled ayu at dinner — but the bath is mixed, and 2026 reviews flag tired rooms and patchy cleaning

Kawayu Midoriya is a large riverside inn at Kawayu, the Kumano hot spring where water wells up through the riverbed. It belongs to the Hotel Urashima chain, whose parent company turns 70 in December 2026, and on 27 December 2025 it reopened with a new lobby, a free lounge pouring draft beer, wine and local juices, and two 80㎡ suites with free-flowing open-air baths. The big draw is the open-air bath on the Ōtō River gravel, fed by the inn's own 70°C spring and kept for guests: you walk out from the indoor bath in a bathing wrap, soak at the level of the water, then wade into the river in summer. In winter the free village river bath, Sennin-buro, is a 7-minute walk away. Japanese guests rate it 4.2 across 1,287 reviews on one major site (baths 4.4) and 4.20 across 1,115 on another, and bloggers who stayed from 2023 to 2025 loved the river views, the steam rising off the water at dawn and the starry night soaks. Dinner is a half-buffet: three set dishes plus about 30 local dishes, unlimited salt-grilled ayu, and in 2026 free beer, sake and umeshu with the meal. Know before you book: the river bath is mixed, with a loosely separate pool for each sex, and a guest in August 2026 felt uneasy there. Other 2026 complaints: dusty rooms, torn wallpaper, mouldy taps and broken bath fittings, groups taking over the lounge, and a buffet one guest felt had been tailored to tourists. Two-meal stays ran about ¥12,000–24,000 per person in summer 2026, and over ¥30,000 in the suites.

Recomendadas

  • Japanese rooms, 10 tatami, on the river side (川側)

The standard rooms look over cedar woods and down onto the Ōtō River. A blogger who stayed in late February called the river side 'by far' the one to book, and found the room large and spotless though a little dated. A January 2024 traveller got a bright sixth-floor corner room with windows all round, right above the open-air bath. In summer 2026, guests who could only get mountain-side rooms missed the view.

  • Sansui (山翠) and Ryokusui (緑翠) suites, renovated December 2025

80㎡ rooms for two, each with a free-flowing open-air bath facing the river and woods. Sansui adds a private sauna; Ryokusui has a sunroom with a day bed and mini bar. Suite guests get a Kumano kaiseki dinner with Kumano beef, Ise lobster and kue. An August 2026 guest in Sansui loved it, but one June 2026 solo guest found the suite bath hard to get to the right temperature.

Mejor evitar

  • Cheapest twins, the 20㎡ Western rooms with an open-air bath, and some upper-floor rooms

A September 2026 guest in the cheapest room found dust everywhere and a lingering smell. In May 2026 another found an open-air-bath Western room not properly cleaned and with no washing area at its bath. Guests in July and September 2026 noted torn or peeling wallpaper and a worn duvet, and in July 2026 the air conditioning in rooms 306–308 was too weak, though the inn moved the guests. A long-time guest found in July 2026 that apart from the new entrance, the rooms and baths were unchanged.

Consenso sobre el desayuno

3.9/5

Japanese-Western buffet (7:00–9:00) with onsen-cooked eggs, onsen tofu, rice porridge made with spring water, dried ayu and dashimaki omelette — enjoyable, but very crowded at 7:00 in the busy season

Drink from the spring tap near the baths and the dining room. The free lounge pours drinks 14:00–17:00 and 19:30–22:00 only. Book the free morning shuttle to Hosshinmon-ōji to start the Kumano Kodo walk. Bring a swimsuit in summer to go between the bath and the river, and in winter cross to Sennin-buro. If you don't want to be seen from the dining room, choose your bath times.

Claves de la cena

3.9/5

A half-buffet in a riverside dining room (18:00–21:00): three set dishes such as sashimi, a hotpot or wagyu, then about 30 local dishes, tempura fried to order, mehari and saury sushi, and unlimited salt-grilled ayu, which almost everyone praises. In January 2025 there was kue and fugu hotpot. Beer, local sake, umeshu and soft drinks were free with dinner in 2026, plus soft-serve ice cream. Critics in 2024–2026 called the taste 'so-so' and found some dishes missing on the day, and one September 2026 guest found the miso soup weak and cheese in the tempura. Suite guests get the separate Kumano kaiseki.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

The inn's own pumped spring, Kawayu Urashima-yu: 70.5°C at the source, pH 7.0, 450 litres a minute (official analysis, 2008). A blogger lists it as a sodium bicarbonate-chloride spring. The official site says the river bath takes the source water as it is, the suite and room baths are free-flowing, and a regular guest calls the water free-flowing and a little hot; some notice a faint sulphur smell.

Privacidad y ambiente

A large indoor bath with river views leads out to the open-air bath on the river gravel, kept for the inn's guests (5:00–24:00, closed 10:00–14:00 for cleaning). It is mixed: everyone wears the bathing wraps provided, and there are two pools loosely split by sex. Guests found it hard to relax when others came close (August 2026) and found the men's wrap slipped off. In summer some guests come in from the river in swimsuits and sandy shoes. Some reviewers found the indoor bath old, with mouldy taps and broken pumps and dryers (July–August 2026). The private baths are only in the suites and open-air-bath rooms.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

    Check-in 15:00, check-out 10:00. In summer 2026 guests couldn't stay on to use the river after check-out.

  2. 02

The open-air river bath is mixed, with bathing wraps. The water and the river are open to the sky, so bad weather can close the bath.

  3. 03

A big inn (83 rooms on one site) popular with Kumano Kodo walkers and tour groups: several 2026 guests found the lobby and lounge noisy and crowded.

  4. 04

The inn closes on set days most months — check the official news page for closure dates before planning.

  5. 05

Free covered parking for up to 60 cars. Credit cards and many e-payment apps are accepted.
