Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

A 12-room 'cooking inn' remodelled by Seven Stars train designer Eiji Mitooka, steps from Lake Kinrin, with free-flowing spring water in every bath and open-air tubs in the cottages — but it sits on Yufuin's busiest strip, the shared baths are small and the cheapest rooms have only a shower

Souan Kosumosu opened in 1987 between Yufuin's Yunotsubo shopping street and Lake Kinrin and has always called itself a 'cooking inn'. In 2017 Eiji Mitooka, designer of JR Kyushu's Seven Stars train, remodelled the whole house: kumiko latticework, patterned sofas, and tables, chairs and low beds on tatami. Shoes come off at the door and the corridors are tatami throughout. The main building has three room types; the cottages, linked by a wooden walkway, each have their own open-air bath. The inn says every bath — two gender-separated baths, two family baths and the cottage tubs — runs free-flowing weakly alkaline spring water (pH 8.2), and the family baths are free and unbooked, first come, first served. Japanese guests rate it 4.84 across 53 reviews on one leading site (food 4.92), 4.8 across 300 on another and 4.73 across 219 on a third. Bloggers from 2022 to 2024 praised the handmade welcome sweets, a dashi-led kaiseki of hamo, grilled ayu, shamo hotpot and Bungo beef, and above all the inn's home-grown rice at breakfast; reviewers keep remarking how quiet it is inside despite the crowds outside. The catches: it sits on Yufuin's busiest strip, the shared baths are small (the lowest-scored category on two of the three sites), the cheapest main-building rooms have only a shower, and a 2023 cottage guest found insects at night and a toilet that barely flushed. A minority in 2025–2026 found the food ordinary for the price or wanted more polished service. Two-meal stays run about ¥38,000–55,000 per person.

Recomendadas

  • Hanare Tokubetsushitsu (離れ特別室), the special cottage — e.g. Yūsuge (ゆうすげ)

The inn's most secluded room, at the far end of the grounds: two rooms (10 + 8 tatami), a Mitooka-designed bedroom and a spacious open-air bath, with a separate shower room for washing first. A summer 2023 guest in Yūsuge had the tub to themselves and dinner brought to the room; a November 2025 guest wanted to come back 'again and again'. From about ¥110,000 for two with two meals on one booking site. The same room had insects at night and a poorly flushing toilet in August 2023, and mosquito coils are supplied for the outdoor bath in summer.

  • Hanare Nikaiya (離れ二階屋), the two-storey maisonette cottage

A 10-tatami living room plus an anteroom and the open-air bath downstairs, an 8-tatami bedroom upstairs and a toilet on each floor, facing a mossy garden; a February 2026 guest found the split layout comfortable and the inn spotless. From about ¥97,000 for two with two meals. An April 2026 guest found the living-room TV small and none in the bedroom. For families or groups of up to six, the main building's Tokubetsushitsu has a lattice-panelled living room and two lockable bedrooms.

Mejor evitar

  • Honkan Washitsu Futama (本館和室・二間), the second-floor main-building rooms

The cheapest way in (about ¥76,000 for two with two meals) and the room most reviewers stayed in, but the official site lists only a shower room — no tub — so you depend on the shared baths, which guests call small. The ground-floor Uchiyu-tsuki rooms do have their own spring-water bath, though a 2022 blogger in a main-building room with its own bath found the washbasin by the entrance, far from the bath.

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.5/5

A Japanese set breakfast (8:00–10:00) of salad, yudōfu, chawanmushi with namafu, salt-grilled yellowtail, mentaiko and miso soup with aosa, built around the inn's own Milky Princess rice cooked in a clay pot — bloggers in 2022 and 2023 went back for seconds and thirds, and a fresh pot may be brought. One booking site rates breakfast 4.4, its lowest score

Use the two family baths as soon as you arrive: they're free, need no booking (15:00–23:00 and 6:30–10:00) and come with towels; only the cottage tubs are open 24 hours. Guests since 2023 have found the fridge drinks (beer, oolong tea, soda) free. Arriving by train, call from Yufuin Station and the inn arranges a pick-up. Driving, follow the inn's directions rather than sat-nav — guests were led down narrow lanes, and the approach and car park (12 free spaces) are tight.

Claves de la cena

4.5/5

The Tokusen Kosumosu kaiseki is served 18:30–21:00 (last order 20:00) and takes about two hours, in a private dining room, an adults-only restaurant with jazz on TANNOY speakers, or a restaurant with a kids' playroom. A summer 2022 menu ran from shiitake broth to hamo, Oita's ryūkyū marinated fish, shamo-chicken hotpot, grilled ayu, Bungo beef and the house rice — 'not flashy, but true to the dashi and ingredients', one blogger wrote. Portions are large — guests from 2024 to 2026 called them almost too much. Allergies are handled with notice. Critics: an April 2026 guest who had stayed at about 20 Yufuin inns found the ingredients ordinary and the sea bream not fresh, and an August 2025 family wanted 'one more twist' at this price.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

Weakly alkaline simple spring (pH 8.2), rich in metasilicic acid and silky on the skin. The inn states every bath is free-flowing (gensen kakenagashi); the spring runs hot, so the temperature is adjusted by the flow rate — guests have found it both too hot and pleasantly lukewarm.

Privacidad y ambiente

Two gender-separated baths, each with an indoor and an outdoor tub, plus two family baths (indoor plus outdoor) that are free to lock for private use whenever they're empty. Every cottage has its own open-air bath, usable 24 hours. Guests praise the soft water and rarely meet other guests, but several found the shared baths small, one group of four found the changing room cramped and the end washing station draughty, and one 2023 guest found the large baths not very big because so many rooms have their own.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Check-in 15:00 (by 18:00 on dinner plans), check-out 11:00. The official site's cancellation fees are 10% from 7 days before, 20% from 3 days and 50% on the day; plans on one booking site charge 30%, 50% and 100% — check your channel.

  2. 02

The lanes outside are among Yufuin's most crowded; the entrance is small and easy to walk past, though guests say it is strikingly quiet once inside.

  3. 03

Shoes come off at the entrance and the corridors are tatami; the main building has a lift, and the inn lends wheelchairs.

  4. 04

Children are welcome, with a restaurant beside a kids' playroom and children's meals; one booking site charges ¥3,300 for infants sharing a bed and 40% of the adult rate for primary-school children.

  5. 05

The free station pick-up can't be booked in advance — phone the inn when you arrive at JR Yufuin Station.
