Twelve villas built from relocated old farmhouses, each with its own onsen, and a bar with a 1930s theatre speaker — Yufuin's most atmospheric hideaway, if you don't need a view or a big bath
Sanso Murata started as a small tea house in 1983 and opened as an inn in 1992, built on the idea of giving old farmhouses a second life: several villas and Tan's Bar are Meiji-era houses moved here and restored (one guest's villa came from Shiga, 100 years old), and it's counted among Yufuin's three great inns with Kamenoi Bessou and Tamanoyu. There are just twelve detached rooms of 63–165㎡, each with its own free-flowing onsen bath — and no shared baths at all. Japanese guests rate it 4.78 across 20 reviews on one leading site (4.85 for service and baths), and praise staff who remember their names and past dislikes, a free taxi anywhere in town, and Tan's Bar with around 200 spirits, a 1930s Western Electric horn speaker and prices kept low at the late founder's wish (Macallan 18 for ¥4,000). Dinner is in your room or a private room, with seafood, a hotpot and Oita wagyu. Reviews on another site are cooler (4.33 across 128): guests mention no view, no large bath, too much food, windows dirty and grounds untended, a soft sagging sofa, a gecko and damp bedding, and one long-time guest felt it had 'become an ordinary inn'. Expect around ¥75,000–88,000 per person with two meals.

The relocated farmhouse villas (e.g. Fuji 藤, Meiji 明治)
The heart of the concept. A June 2025 couple paid ¥174,240 for two with dinner and breakfast for Fuji, a 100-year-old house moved from Shiga; Meiji (165㎡, up to eight people) is also a Meiji-era house. Larger villas like these start around ¥75,000–78,000 per person.
Akatsuki (暁) and Kyu (汲)
Akatsuki is by far the most reviewed room on one Japanese site. Kyu (91㎡) is a newer-style villa whose bath is 'almost open-air' with the windows open, and its water feels soft and slightly silky, one guest wrote — but it has a steep entrance stair and many level changes, and children aren't accepted there.

Smaller villas (Raku 楽, Shin 新), if you want space or a view
At 63㎡ these are the smallest and priciest per person (from about ¥85,800). A 2023 guest in Shin noted there's no view, and a 2026 guest in Raku found the sofa too soft and sagging. Bear in mind the whole inn has many steps and isn't barrier-free.

La cocina a fondo
Consenso sobre el desayuno
4.2/5A Japanese breakfast in your room or the Saihido tea house — freshly scooped tofu one guest ranked 'top class', saikyo-grilled John Dory, clam miso soup
Spend time in Tan's Bar (open to guests 9:00–23:00, free coffee and juice), and pick up the famous P-roll cake at the inn's B-speak shop. Use the free taxi shuttle anywhere in Yufuin.
Claves de la cena
4.2/5Served in your room or in private rooms at the Saihido tea house (some villas always dine there): sashimi of tiger prawn, chu-toro and Seki aji, hamo soup, ayu, a kue or local-chicken hotpot, Oita wagyu and clay-pot rice, with dessert at Tan's Bar. Guests call it generous — often too much to finish. The criticisms: watery sashimi and long gaps between courses (2024), the same ingredients two nights running and a breakfast that felt not homemade (2026), and a hotpot not to everyone's taste.
Onsen y bienestar: la realidad
A simple spring, colourless and odourless, free-flowing in every room (one booking site notes water is added); a blogger reports it is high in metasilicic acid.
Every villa has its own onsen bath, some semi-open-air, and there is no large public bath or outdoor bath at all — a point one reviewer missed. Baths are about 2m square in the smaller rooms. The tradeoff of the rustic setting: one guest found a gecko living in the bath and damp bedding.
No policy found, but with only private in-room baths you never share a bath.
