Nushiyu Ryokan
草津温泉 ぬ志勇旅館

A small family-run inn on the Yubatake with Kusatsu's only open-air bath looking down on the hot-spring field, fed by the rare Shirahata spring, plus a free private bath — but it's an old stair-climbing house with smoking rooms, no air conditioning and cash-only payment, and the view is mostly from the men's side
Nushiyu Ryokan stands beside the stone steps up to Kōsenji temple, about 15 seconds' walk from the Yubatake. The official site dates the family business to the early Meiji era; today it's a 14-room house of Japanese rooms on five floors with no lift. Its pitch is the water: it is one of about ten inns that draw the Shirahata spring beside the Yubatake, and it advertises the only open-air bath in Kusatsu that looks down on the hot-spring field. The official site is unusually candid — the building is old, there are many stairs, the water is pumped up rather than gravity-fed (though not recirculated, heated or diluted), and the Yubatake is hard to see from the women's open-air bath. Guests rate it 4.40 across 571 reviews on one major site (baths 4.53, dinner 4.56) and 4.3 across 853 on another (baths 4.6, but cleanliness 3.9). Bloggers who stayed in December 2022, mid-2025 and December 2025 liked the soft-feeling, hot water, the free private bath you use whenever it's empty, generous home-style dinners and friendly staff; 2026 reviewers add valet parking and an unrequested anniversary surprise. The complaints, mostly from 2025–2026: rooms are sold as smoking rooms and some guests smelled smoke from neighbours, bathrooms and washrooms are worn, one found cobwebs and another dusty fans, sound carries through the old building, the baths can be very hot, and trees block the Yubatake view from the open-air tubs unless you stand. Payment is cash only. Two-meal stays run about ¥14,000–17,000 per person for two sharing on most dates, up to about ¥26,000 at peak.

Yubatake-view rooms (湯畑眺望客室) on the 4th and 5th floors, such as the two-room Shirakaba (しらかば)
Sold as a separate room type on booking sites, from about ¥16,000–18,000 per person with two meals in October 2026. Several 2026 reviewers (July, September and October) saw the Yubatake from their rooms, and one called the night-time illumination magical. These are also the rooms with the most stairs to climb.
Komakusa (こまくさ), the single 'a-little-Yubatake-view' 6-mat room on the 4th floor
A blogger who stayed in December 2022 paid ¥25,864 for two with two meals (before a travel subsidy) and found it clean, with a new gas heater, humidifier, toilet and washbasin, and roomier than 6 mats thanks to the alcove and sky outside. The Yubatake was hidden by steam until it was lit up after dark. It sits up a steep staircase in the rear annex — 'really the 5th floor' — and footsteps from the floor above carry.

Unassigned 'omakase' Japanese rooms (6, 8 or 10 mats)
The cheapest plans give you whichever room is free, with a toilet and washbasin but no bath, and they're listed as smoking-permitted. A September 2026 guest in a 2nd-floor room had almost no view and heard visitors on the temple steps; a June 2026 guest in a rear room smelled smoke from next door. Lower floors are closest to the indoor baths and dining room — the inn gave a 2nd-floor room to a guest using a cane (September 2026), so ask when booking.

La cocina a fondo
Consenso sobre el desayuno
4.3/5A classic Japanese set breakfast in the dining room — rice served from a wooden ohitsu (Niigata rice cooked in a gas pot, says the inn) and well-grilled salmon; a three-night guest in August 2026 found the menu changed every day
Arriving by bus? The lane toward the convenience store from the bus terminal leads to an upper back entrance — phone the front desk, or (as one October 2026 guest advises) take the temple steps down to the main entrance on the Yubatake side. By car, stop by the Shirahata spring and hand over your key; staff drive it to the inn's 14 free spaces, and several 2026 guests could leave it until about 13:00 after check-out. Rooms have an empty fridge, and room-only plans allow your own food and drink.
Claves de la cena
4.4/5Local, seasonal home-style kaiseki in the dining hall. The standard plan centres on pork shabu-shabu; the most popular plan adds Jōshū beef steak cooked on a ceramic plate for ¥932 more, and on weekdays Jōshū beef shabu-shabu costs ¥1,620 extra. A December 2025 blogger had a yuba dish, shabu-shabu, fish and thick roast beef and was too full for dessert; 2026 reviewers mention a printed menu, attractive tableware, a different menu each night of a two-night stay and staff timing each course. A few found it average (June 2026) or the rice portions overwhelming.
Onsen y bienestar: la realidad
Kusatsu's Shirahata spring (acidic sulphate-chloride spring), piped from the source beside the Yubatake — the inn says only about ten inns draw it. Because the baths sit high above the source, the water is pumped up rather than gravity-fed; it leaves the spout at about 50°C, and the official site states it is not recirculated, heated or diluted (water is used only to adjust the temperature after cleaning).
Separate men's and women's open-air 'Yubatake view' baths, reached by stairs from the 4th floor, plus men's and women's indoor baths with granite floors and cedar pillars and a family private bath — all open 24 hours. The private bath is free and unreserved: use it whenever it's empty. The baths are small. The men's open-air bath has the real view; the official site warns that the Yubatake is hard to see from the women's, and 2026 reviewers say plants block it while seated. Temperatures vary: the indoor and private baths have a hotter section by the spout (close to 50°C), while the open-air bath can be milder — even lukewarm on a rainy day in 2025. Hair dryers are lent at the front desk for use in your room.
No policy found on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the inn. A free private bath is available.

Check-in from about 14:00 (13:45 on one booking site; by 18:00 on dinner plans, 19:00 on breakfast-only plans), check-out 10:00. The front door is locked at 23:00.
- 02
Cash only — credit cards aren't accepted at the inn. Kusatsu's bathing tax (¥150 per person) and, from December to March, a heating charge of ¥1,100 per room are added.
- 03
No lift in a five-storey building with maze-like stairs; rooms start on the 2nd floor and the view rooms involve the most climbing. The official site says there are no barrier-free facilities — mention mobility needs when booking.
- 04
Rooms are sold as smoking-permitted. Two bloggers noticed no smell, but some 2026 guests smelled smoke from neighbouring rooms. There's no air conditioning in rooms — fans in summer, though Kusatsu sits at about 1,200 m and nights are cool.
- 05
It's an old wooden house: 2025–2026 reviewers mention worn bathrooms and changing rooms, cobwebs, dusty fans, noise from upstairs and from temple visitors on the steps outside, and a dial phone in the room.
