Consenso de huéspedes japoneses

A 20-room sukiya inn above Yugawara with three free private open-air baths, vintage Scandinavian chairs in every room and old-style in-room dining — but only half the rooms have spring water in their hinoki tubs, and the food under a newer chef divides repeat guests

Fukiya is a small inn of 20 rooms on the hillside above Yugawara's old spa quarter, built in the sukiya style (the best rooms were designed by the architect Kazuyuki Nimura) and furnished with a collection of vintage Scandinavian chairs — Finn Juhl, Larsen, Wanscher — that has earned it the nickname 'the chair geek's inn', as the inn itself puts it. The draw is the bathing: two gender-separated baths with rock open-air tubs plus three private open-air hinoki baths, all free — one on the third floor booked in 40-minute slots, and two on the roof that you simply use when the lamp by the lift is off. Meals are a monthly-changing kaiseki and a breakfast built around rice cooked in a clay pot for each room, both brought to your room by a nakai in kimono. Japanese guests rate it 4.8 across 165 reviews on one major site (rooms 5.0, baths 4.9) and 4.72 across 50 on another, and bloggers who stayed in 2022 and 2023 praised the quiet, the rooftop baths and an almost absurd list of free extras, from after-bath shaved ice to baby nappies. Know before you book: only ten rooms (types S, Y, A, X and B) have spring water in their in-room tubs — two bloggers in cheaper rooms found plain water. In 2026 one guest found a 'special' room dated with tired carpet, several found dinners too large, and a long-time repeat guest felt the food had slipped since the chef changed. Official weekday rates with two meals run ¥31,900–53,900 per person, plus ¥2,200–12,100 on busier dates.

Guía para elegir habitación

Recomendadas

  • Type A corner rooms (307 and 407) or Type S with its own garden

Nimura-designed sukiya rooms of 74㎡+ (10 + 8 tatami with an 8-mat veranda) and a 350-litre hinoki tub filled from the spring, with Larsen and Wanscher chairs on the veranda. A February 2026 guest watched white-eyes and bush warblers in the plum garden from the sunny veranda. Type Y (74㎡+) adds a high boat-bottom ceiling of Kitayama cedar.

  • Type B (10 + 6 tatami, 56㎡+) for spring water at a lower price

The cheapest type with spring water from the tap of its hinoki tub, booked by a family of three in August 2026 and a solo traveller in December 2025 who praised the view and well-planned layout. The spring is so hot that staff fill the tub before you arrive so it can cool without adding water, a September 2026 guest noted.

Mejor evitar

  • Types C, D and E — and anyone expecting a 'special room' to feel new

The hinoki tubs in these rooms are not hot-spring water (the inn lists only rooms 201–207, 306, 307, 406 and 407 as spring-fed); bloggers in January 2022 and December 2022 skipped theirs, and the latter found the bathroom, toilet and a staircase dim. Type D is a single 10-mat room (32㎡) and Type E has no mountain view. A May 2026 guest in a Type A room found the building dated, the carpet due for replacement and the room smaller than its photos.

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.4/5

In-room Japanese breakfast (8:00, 8:30 or 9:00) built around Koshihikari rice cooked in a clay pot for each room, Kuwana nori you toast over a binchōtan brazier, house-made tofu and fatty dried horse mackerel — bloggers called it 'enormous' and loved the rice

Book the third-floor private bath slot ahead through the inn's LINE account (one 40-minute slot per room); the two rooftop baths need no booking — check the lamp by the lift. Free morning coffee is served in the lobby 7:00–8:00, and after-bath treats (bean jelly, shaved ice, draught beer) are brought to your room. Take a taxi from the station (about ¥1,200–1,500); the inn advises against the bus because of the steep climb.

Claves de la cena

4.2/5

A monthly kaiseki served in your room at 18:00 or 18:30 and lasting about two hours, with sashimi bought that morning at Odawara's Hayakawa port; the September 2026 menu included steamed abalone, wagyu and matsutake sukiyaki and matsutake rice. Plans add a wagyu or abalone steak, wagyu shabu-shabu or a low-carb menu. Bloggers praised the chawanmushi and mixed rice, and a 2026 solo guest the dashi of the soup course. But many find it too much food, a December 2022 blogger thought it meat-heavy, and opinion on the chef who arrived in June 2024 is split: one long-time guest loves the cooking, while another, coming since the previous generation, wrote in September 2026 that the food had disappointed since the change.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

Yugawara Onsen's sodium-calcium chloride-sulphate spring (pH 8.6, 60.1°C in the storage tank), clear, odourless and soft. The official site does not say whether the shared baths are free-flowing or recirculated; one booking site lists the private baths as natural spring water with water added for temperature and heating. Ten rooms get spring water straight from the tap.

Privacidad y ambiente

Seven baths in all: two gender-separated indoor baths with rock open-air tubs (15:00–9:30, swapping at midnight), a third-floor oval hinoki private bath booked in 40-minute slots, and two larger rooftop hinoki private baths with mountain views that are free to use whenever empty (15:00–24:00 and 6:00–9:00). The rooftop baths have no roof — rain hats are provided — and a 2025 guest worried they could be seen from buildings on the hillside (and saw wild monkeys). With so few rooms, a January 2022 blogger had the main bath to themselves. A low-temperature private bedrock sauna costs extra; a February 2026 guest found its floor too hot to stand on.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Check-in 15:00–19:00, check-out 10:30; early check-in at 13:30 or late check-out at 12:00 costs ¥2,200 per person. Yugawara's ¥300 per person accommodation tax (from April 2026) and bathing tax are extra.

  2. 02

The inn sits at the top of a steep, curving lane: there's no shuttle, buses aren't recommended, and the nearest convenience store, 300 m away, is up a steep slope. Parking is free.

  3. 03

Cancellation: 30% from three days before, 50% the day before, 100% on the day or for no-shows.

  4. 04

Smoking is permitted in guest rooms (public areas are non-smoking), so ask for a non-smoking room if it matters.

  5. 05

Children of any age are welcome, with nappies, baby bedding, bath toys and children's yukata provided, but strollers can't be used inside, and wheelchairs only in corridors and lifts as rooms are tatami.
