Hoshino Resorts' 24-room inn in Tamatsukuri: every room has its own open-air onsen bath, staff perform Iwami kagura every night and dinner centres on a shijimi-clam beef shabu-shabu — but the water is diluted, heated and recirculated, the building is full of steps, and 2026 reviews note slips in service

KAI Tamatsukuri is a two-storey, 24-room Hoshino Resorts inn set around a bamboo courtyard in Tamatsukuri Onsen, a spa the Izumo Fudoki praised for beautiful skin some 1,300 years ago. It reopened in November 2022 after a full renovation, and every room is now a 46–52㎡ 'Tamayu-no-ma' with its own open-air bath in Shigaraki ware or hinoki. Rooms are fitted with Izumo forged-iron handles and tiles from the Yumachi kiln. It rates 4.7 across 697 reviews on Jalan, with rooms and dinner at 4.8. Bloggers from 2024 to 2026 and recent reviewers praise three things. First, the Iwami kagura 'Orochi', danced by staff at 21:15 at close range. Second, the programme of activities: a tea ceremony, a ghost-story tea room, a sake bar and face packs soaked in spring water or sake. Third, dinners built around beef shabu-shabu in shijimi-clam broth, with live Matsuba crab in winter. Many guests also say the large bath is often almost empty because everyone uses their room tub. Know the catches before you book. Jalan lists the onsen as diluted, heated and recirculated, and a 2025 blogger noted the room tubs are filtered and recirculated. There is no sauna and no pick-up from the station. The building has steps everywhere, which older guests found hard. Several 2025–2026 reviews describe slipping standards: a cold breakfast, slow courses at dinner, cleaning missed in one room, insects at the dinner table and a check-in that took over 10 minutes. Two-meal stays run about ¥89,000–96,000 for two on the standard plan (October 2026), or ¥118,000 and up with crab.

Recomendadas

  • Tamayu-no-ma, ground floor with hinoki open-air bath (52㎡)

A blogger writing in March 2025 found the ground-floor hinoki room's bath area 'very spacious', with a wide garden space that makes it feel open; an August 2026 repeat guest also chose the hinoki room for a roomier soak. The 52㎡ ground-floor rooms, with Shigaraki or hinoki baths, cost from about ¥95,700 for two with meals on the standard plan.

  • Tamayu-no-ma, upper floor with Shigaraki-ware open-air bath (46㎡)

The cheapest way in, from about ¥89,100 for two with meals (¥84,644 with the 60-day early-booking discount). A couple who stayed upstairs in October 2025 found it spacious, with two sofas, a large shower room and a 'fuwamoku' bed they slept well in. Rooms have a sake-barrel table and a guide to Shimane breweries. A January 2026 family of three found a room fine with a third bed added.

Mejor evitar

  • Any room, for guests with limited mobility or on rainy days

There are steps and short staircases on the way to rooms (January 2026), and a step between the bed and the sitting area (September 2026). A January 2026 reviewer noted it isn't barrier-free, and two 2026 reviewers' older parents found the stairs hard. The room baths have no roof, so rain spoils them (December 2025). Rooms have a shower but no indoor tub, so you dry off before walking out to the open-air bath. An August 2026 guest noticed the constant sound of the tub overflowing.

La cocina a fondo

Consenso sobre el desayuno

4.3/5

A Japanese set breakfast, served at a time you book on arrival. It centres on a 'tōji-nabe' hotpot of chicken meatballs in sake lees, with grilled fish such as dried nodoguro; a Western breakfast is also available. Most guests like it, but a December 2025 guest found it all cold and the grilled fish poor, and a May 2026 guest found the nodoguro undercooked and fishy

At check-in, take a tag from the board for the tea ceremony (15:30–18:30, 20 minutes each) and ask about the 20:00 ghost-story tea room, which takes six people. Seats for the 21:15 kagura are first come, first served, so arrive early or you'll stand. The sake bar (18:30–21:30) pours three Shimane sakes with a snack for ¥1,200. Ice lollies and drinks by the baths are free, as is coffee in the travel library. Sleepwear is a samue only, so bring a T-shirt.

Claves de la cena

4.6/5

Seasonal kaiseki in partitioned seats at the dining room, at 17:30 or 19:30. An October 2025 menu opened with seared nodoguro, then a hōraku platter, sashimi and a fried course. The main course was beef shabu-shabu in shijimi-clam broth, finished with soba in the same broth, then a sake-lees dessert. From about November to early March, a tagged live Matsuba crab kaiseki costs extra and was the highlight for a January 2026 blogger. Six- or seven-sake and wine pairings are offered. Complaints: a September 2026 guest waited over 10 minutes between courses, a June 2026 guest thought portions small for big eaters, and a July 2026 guest had insects land on the table.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

Tamatsukuri Onsen, a sodium–calcium sulphate–chloride spring according to the official site. Jalan lists it as diluted, heated and recirculated with filtration, and a 2025 blogger noted the room baths are filtered and recirculated around the clock — so this is not free-flowing water, though the room tubs are always full.

Privacidad y ambiente

Every room has its own open-air bath of Shigaraki ware or hinoki, usable at any time. The large baths (guests only, 14:30–1:00 and 5:00–10:00, not swapped between men and women) each have a bright indoor bath with a shrine-shaped spout and a rock-built outdoor tub, plus spring-water and sake face packs. There's no sauna. Because guests have their own tubs, several bloggers and reviewers had the large bath almost to themselves, including one family on a snowy January 2026 night.

Política sobre tatuajes

Hoshino Resorts doesn't ban tattoos outright, but its group policy, linked from KAI Tamatsukuri's bath information, says staff may refuse use of the large bath if they judge other guests could feel afraid. Every room has its own open-air bath.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

Since 1 April 2026, check-in is 14:30 and check-out 11:00 (it used to be 15:00 and noon); older reviews praising the late check-out no longer apply, and an April 2026 guest was disappointed not to be told.

  2. 02

No station pick-up: JR Tamatsukuri-Onsen Station is 5 minutes by car and the inn recommends booking a taxi in advance; Izumo Airport is about 40 minutes by car. Parking is free; Jalan advises winter tyres or chains in winter.

  3. 03

Book the 17:30 dinner if you want to see the 21:15 kagura without rushing — a March 2026 guest whose dinner began at 19:40 missed it, and staff will bring dessert to your room if the show starts mid-meal.

  4. 04

Not barrier-free: steps and stairs throughout, though staff carry luggage and a wheelchair can be borrowed. An August 2026 guest travelling with a parent with limited mobility found a room near the baths and dining room easiest.

  5. 05

Children up to age 6 can share a bed, and baby baths, potty seats and bottle kettles can be borrowed. Pets are not accepted. The building is non-smoking apart from a smoking area.
