Hoshino Resorts' music-themed inn, rebuilt in August 2026 around record players, Nagano wine and a nightly lobby concert — but the dinner is now Italian, the onsen is recirculated, and almost every review predates the relaunch

KAI Matsumoto took over a former inn called Kishōan in 2011 and has always played on Matsumoto's identity as a 'city of music'. On 4 August 2026 it reopened after a full renovation: all 29 rooms are now music-themed 'GAKU' rooms with a record player and speakers, 19 have their own open-air bath, and a new Nagano Wine Bar sits beside the lobby stage under a domed ceiling about 10 m high. The biggest change is dinner — a seven-course Italian menu, the first in the KAI brand, served in semi-private booths and paired only with Nagano wines (about 50 kept on hand). Bloggers who stayed between 2022 and 2025 loved the nightly concert, the eight kinds of bathing in the large baths (a lying bath, a radiant bath, a hinoki sawdust bath and saunas) and polished service. They also noted worn rooms and a few poor dinners. The first post-relaunch reviews, from August to October 2026, mostly praise the Italian course and the service, but a guest on their ninth visit found it ordinary and missed the old kaiseki. One restaurant-review site scores it 3.68 from 95 reviewers; the largest Japanese booking site shows no score yet because there are too few recent reviews. The catch for onsen purists: the booking-site listing describes the Asama spring water as diluted, heated and recirculated. Rates start at about ¥41,000 per person with two meals (the official booking engine showed from ¥33,000 in October 2026).

Recomendadas

  • Japanese room with terrace and open-air bath

Two bloggers who stayed in open-air-bath rooms in 2022 had more than one tatami room — more than enough space for two — and an onsen bath outside that one of them used at all hours. These rooms are among the 19 with an open-air bath and were refitted in 2026 with the record player and Matsumoto lacquer art panels. Book one if you want to skip the large baths' shift changes.

  • GAKU Suite (one room, about 130 m² with terrace) or one of the three new Junior Suites

The new top suite has its own piano in the living room, an onsen open-air bath, a private sauna with a cold bath, and terrace speakers and a daybed so the music carries on while you cool off. The three Junior Suites, also new, each have a different layout and an open-air bath; in the one shown to the press, nothing but sky is visible from the tub. Both opened in August 2026, so these descriptions come from press previews — no independent guest has reviewed them yet.

Mejor evitar

  • Rooms without an open-air bath (10 of the 29)

These have only an indoor bath. A May 2025 blogger whose room had only an indoor bath found it spacious, but the window looks onto an ordinary residential street (the upper glass is frosted), and the large bath was far nicer. Reviewers in 2023 and June 2025 called the pre-renovation rooms worn; the August 2026 refit should fix that, but few post-relaunch room reviews exist yet.

Japanese breakfast built around hōba miso (chicken and mushrooms grilled on a magnolia leaf with walnut miso), or a Western tray with an 'oden pot-au-feu' — two October 2026 guests loved the hōba miso and the bread

Pick your dinner slot (17:30 or 19:30) when you book — a 2023 blogger found the early slot fills first. The NAGANO WINE pairing (six glasses for ¥8,000, against about ¥10,900 ordered separately) is better value than glasses at ¥1,200–2,800. The vegetarian Italian course must be ordered by 16:00 five days ahead. There is no Western breakfast on 1–3 January.

Claves de la cena

3.8/5

Since August 2026 dinner has been 'Matsumoto Sinfonia', a seven-course Italian menu: six small starters served on a piano-keyboard stand, salmon millefoglie, a corn sformato, duck ragù tagliatelle, a kinmedai fish stew, beef fillet with a sauce based on the local 'yatara' pickles and miso, and apple tiramisu. Guests in August–October 2026 rated it 4.0–4.8 and praised the presentation, the staff's explanations and the wine matches. But a guest on their ninth visit, who stayed two nights in August 2026, found it merely fine, met the same piano starter on the second night and preferred the old kaiseki. Before the relaunch, dinner was kaiseki with an optional wine sukiyaki, which bloggers in 2022 and 2025 enjoyed; a 2022 reviewer found the fried dishes oily.

Onsen y bienestar: la realidad

Tipo de agua

Asama Onsen alkaline simple spring, smooth and soft on the skin. The inn's listing on a major Japanese booking site describes the water as diluted, heated and recirculated through a filter, and a 2022 reviewer complained of a strong chlorine smell in the large outdoor bath. Don't come expecting free-flowing water.

Privacidad y ambiente

There are two bath halls, Kiten and Shōun, which swap between men and women at night and in the morning, so you need to visit both to try all eight kinds of bathing. They open from check-in to 1:00 and from 5:00 to check-out. Facilities include indoor baths, lying baths, open-air baths, a radiant bath, a hinoki sawdust bath, and a dry sauna and mist sauna with a 120 cm-deep cold plunge you stand in. The large baths were kept largely as they were in 2026, with the garden planting around the open-air baths renewed. A June 2025 guest complained that the bath could be seen into from outside. Free apple vinegar, barley tea and ice lollies wait in the rest area. Photography is not allowed in the baths.

Política sobre tatuajes

None of the official or booking pages we checked states a tattoo policy for KAI Matsumoto — ask the inn. Nineteen of the 29 rooms have their own open-air bath.

Advertencias y matices locales

  1. 01

    Check-in 14:30, check-out 11:00 since the relaunch (bloggers in 2022 and 2023 had 15:00 and 12:00 — confirm for your plan).

  2. 02

There is no shuttle. From JR Matsumoto Station (about 2½ hours from Shinjuku on the Azusa limited express), take a taxi (about 15–20 minutes) or the Asama-line bus from stop 23 at the Oshiro exit to Hot Plaza Asama-mae. Parking is free; studless tyres or chains are advised in winter.

  3. 03

The nightly Sonority Concert in the lobby is free and needs no booking (20:30 and 21:30, according to a press preview). Staff first explain how different woods change a guitar's tone, then musicians play; the line-up changes nightly. The new wine bar beside the stage is paid (a three-item snack platter is ¥700).

  4. 04

Children are welcome: under-sevens can share a bed, and there are Western-style kids' menus. But the relaunched inn is pitched at adults, with wine and music at its heart. No pets; the building is non-smoking apart from a smoking area.

  5. 05

The streets around the inn feel more residential than an onsen town, according to a 2022 blogger. Matsumoto Castle is about 10 minutes away by car.
