A valley hideaway with a famous standing bath, warm service and a new MICHELIN Key — the French dinner wins guests over, the Japanese course less so
Myojinkan sits alone in a mountain valley above Matsumoto, and in September 2026 it was awarded one MICHELIN Key; it has also been a Relais & Châteaux member since 2008 and was Japan's first Green Key–certified inn (renewed 2025). Guests rate it highly on the big Japanese booking sites — 4.60 across 188 reviews on 一休 (4.71 for service, 4.63 for the baths) and 4.50 across 268 on Rakuten — and since April 2026 only 2 of 58 reviews on one site scored below 4. They come back for three things. The baths: a 24-hour standing bath beside the river (you can watch fish in the stream while you soak), singled out in around 15 reviews, a lukewarm reclining bath designed for long soaks, and an octagonal indoor bath, plus rooms with their own onsen on the terrace. The service, described as warm rather than stuffy: a returning guest found the staff remembered a shiitake allergy from three years earlier, anniversary stays get thoughtful touches, and free rice balls appear as a late-night snack. And the food, which is where opinions split. Dinner at Nature French 'Sai', under executive head chef Masahiro Tanabe, is local and ambitious (venison consommé scented with kuromoji wood, veal with wild mountain vegetables) and was consistently praised in 2026, often with the sommelier's pairings. The Japanese course is the weak spot: several 2026 guests, including one on a fourth visit, found it thin with no real main dish. Everyone agrees breakfast is excellent. The low points are getting there — a narrow last 400–500 m of road where reviewers have met logs and fallen rocks — plus some ageing fixtures, cold baths in midwinter and crowding at peak periods, when the lower scores tend to cluster.

Awarded one MICHELIN Key in the September 2026 selection. Booking sites now list the spring as a heated alkaline simple spring; 2026 guests praise the French dinners but find the Japanese course thin. Matsumoto has added a ¥200 per person accommodation tax from June 2026.

Kumano (「然」 category, 72㎡ + 20㎡ terrace with private onsen)
A large room with its own open-air onsen on the terrace, built with a shallow section so you can lie back as in the reclining bath or sink in up to your shoulders at the deeper end.
Otaka (お鷹) Western-style room
The Western-style room a repeat guest chose when returning after three years for a two-night stay in November 2023 — and on that visit the staff still remembered their shiitake allergy.

Any room, if you're relying on the shuttle
The inn's shuttle leaves Matsumoto Station's east exit only at 15:15 and 16:30 and takes 30–40 minutes, and reviewers mention waits of 10 minutes or more. Check-in runs until 19:30, but on the later shuttle there is less time for the baths before dinner.
Aoi (葵)
A Golden Week 2026 guest found that Aoi faced the staff entrance. If comings and goings bother you, ask for a different room — especially at peak periods, when that guest also found the baths crowded.

La cocina a fondo
Consenso sobre el desayuno
4.7/5Western breakfast at the French restaurant — eggs Benedict with eggs from a local poultry farm, four kinds of bread, a house smoothie and local vegetables — or Japanese breakfast at Shinshu Dining TOBIRA
Even the guest who disliked the dinner called breakfast a dramatic improvement, so don't skip it — and with noon check-out there's time for a last bath afterwards.
Claves de la cena
4.1/5Most guests choose French at Nature French 'Sai' on the fourth floor, where yukata are fine and chopsticks are provided; there is also a Japanese restaurant. The kitchen is led by executive head chef Masahiro Tanabe, and menus lean on local game and produce: venison consommé with kuromoji, asparagus with Meyer lemon, botan shrimp with sweet onion mousse, veal with wild vegetables, amadai and lamb. The French dinners were consistently praised in 2026, with the sommelier's pairings often mentioned, although a 2020 guest had found the pairings 'too idiosyncratic'. The dispute has shifted to the Japanese course: several 2026 guests, including a fourth-time visitor, found it thin with no real main dish, and two noticed bear broth or a bear hotpot on the menu — worth knowing if you'd rather avoid game. One September 2026 guest felt the courses came too fast. Drinks ran ¥1,600 for a glass of wine and ¥850 for a beer in 2020.
Onsen y bienestar: la realidad
Alkaline simple spring, 38–40°C at the source and colourless. According to two booking sites and an onsen site, the baths use 100% hot-spring water but it is not free-flowing: the water is heated in the indoor baths and in the rooms' own onsen baths.
Three public baths: the standing bath 'Setsugekka', open 24 hours, beside the river; the reclining bath 'Kūzan', kept lukewarm for long soaks; and 'Hakuryū' with an octagonal indoor bath. The standing-bath area also has a steam sauna. Some baths close at 23:00, so check the hours before a late soak. Reviewers praise how well they are kept, though guests in January–February 2026 found the baths cold and peak periods can bring crowds.
Not addressed in any source we read. Rooms with a private terrace onsen let you bathe without using the public baths.

Getting there: the inn is in a remote mountain valley, 30–40 minutes by the inn's shuttle from Matsumoto Station's east exit (15:15 and 16:30; shuttles back leave the inn at 9:30 and 11:00). The last 400–500 m of road is narrow, with passing places for oncoming cars, and four reviewers mention logs or fallen rocks — take care if driving.
- 02
Times: check-in is 15:00–19:30 (last dinner start 19:00). Check-out is at noon, one of the most generous in our coverage — but without a car the last shuttle leaves at 11:00.
- 03
Prices: Rakuten's standard plans run about ¥72,600–88,440 per person for the Otaka room (two sharing), ¥113,520–126,720 per person in Zen-Kumano and up to about ¥190,000–206,000 per person in Zen-Shirakaba; discount plans can be lower (from about ¥92,800 a night for two). From 1 June 2026 Matsumoto adds an accommodation tax of ¥200 per person per night on top of the ¥150 bath tax.

Children can stay, and 0–3-year-olds can share a bed. A September 2026 review describes the inn switching a family with a one-year-old to in-room dining and making congee.
- 05
Seasons: guests in January–February 2026 found the building and baths cold, some fixtures are ageing, and one December reviewer found the Christmas decorations so extensive they 'had to crouch to walk' in places. Lower scores cluster at peak periods such as Golden Week, when the baths can be crowded.
