A 1926 riverside inn steeped in Japanese literature — Dazai's honeymoon, Ozu's diaries, 30,000 books — with free private open-air baths and dinner in Taisho-style private rooms; but the shared baths are recirculated and chlorinated, and dinner divides opinion
Shinyu Onsen sits beside the Takinoyu River at about 1,350 m, on a spring said to be one of Takeda Shingen's hidden baths. The Yanagisawa family has run it since 1926, now in its fourth generation, and in the Meiji to early Shōwa years it became a base for poets and writers: Itō Sachio composed ten Tateshina tanka here in 1909, Dazai Osamu came on honeymoon, and film director Ozu Yasujirō's Tateshina diaries mention the inn 17 times. A 2018–2019 renovation turned the 52-room house into a Taisho-romantic library hotel with about 30,000 books, a lounge-bar and an Iwanami Bunko corridor; in its centenary year (2026) it runs heritage tours. Japanese guests rate it 4.6 across 3,784 reviews on one major site (service 4.7) and 4.52 across 1,615 on another. Bloggers in 2025–2026 loved the 14:00–11:00 '21-hour stay', the free 30-minute private open-air baths over the gorge, the women-only planetarium bedrock bath, and Japanese-French dinners in private rooms ending with soup curry. Know before you book: the inn's own notice says the shared baths are recirculated, filtered and chlorinated (one January 2026 guest noticed the chlorine); only some premium rooms have free-flowing open-air baths. In 2025–2026 some found dinner sparse for the price, heavy or salty, and others reported dust, a mouldy smell, artificial flowers, outdoor baths without taps, and long walks from the annex rooms. Two-meal stays run about ¥16,000–30,000+ per person.

Seiryūtei (清流亭), the 45㎡ river-side Japanese rooms in the main building
The inn's only gorge-facing rooms (14 tatami, futons rather than beds) share a building and one lift with the lobby, baths and dining rooms. A May 2025 blogger chose corner room 401 for exactly that reason and found it brighter and larger than expected, with a neatly renovated bath and washbasin; an August 2026 guest called it spacious and spotted deer, and a returning January 2026 guest calls it their regular room. Across the corridor, Shinzantei's 45㎡ rooms face the hill and have beds.
Rooms with their own spring-fed open-air bath — Shinzantei (深山亭) open-air rooms and the Tateshina Club (蓼科倶楽部) suites
Shinzantei's 45㎡ open-air rooms (December 2020) have a hinoki bath in a small courtyard garden, and in February 2026 the Itō Sachio and Yanagiwara Byakuren suites in the ten literati-themed Tateshina Club suites (55–70㎡) reopened with large open-air baths and floor heating; the inn says both are fed straight from its own spring. A spring 2026 blogger on a repeat stay picked a fourth-floor room with an open-air bath — 'quite hot', and used morning and night — and a September 2026 guest in a special room called it superb. Not every Club suite has a fireplace or raised tatami area.

Suzurantei (すずらん亭) and Sangetsutei (山月亭), and anyone sensitive to upkeep
Suzurantei is the cheapest and smallest (25㎡ Japanese rooms) at the end of a long corridor away from the main building and not wheelchair-accessible; Sangetsutei (38㎡, with a river terrace) is in the annex, and guests in July and September 2026 found the walk to meals and baths long. A 2025 blogger noted that the top floors of both wings had no lift. Housekeeping complaints include dust on a bed shelf and all-artificial flowers (July 2026), a mouldy smell in a Tateshina Club room bath and in the bedrock bath (May 2026), and hair left on a shampoo bottle (October 2025).

La cocina a fondo
Consenso sobre el desayuno
4.5/5A Japanese 'Tateshina mountain breakfast' in a private room — Imari or Kutani small plates of local dishes, Shinshu beef in grated daikon and dried char, plus a vegetable salad bar with local kanten — or a Western day with risotto and an egg-topper; the most praised meal (4.66 on one site)
Arrive early: the free 30-minute private open-air baths (one slot per night) and dinner times (17:30–19:30) are allocated in order of arrival, and the three evening private slots at the women's outdoor bath go fast. Bring towels from your room — there are none at the baths. Book a main-building room if you dislike walking. Staying two nights adds a free lunch in the lounge (pasta, galette or omelette rice, May 2025). The trail to Tateshina Ōtaki waterfall is steep — staff warned one 2026 blogger off in sneakers.
Claves de la cena
4.1/5'Tateshina Yama Cuisine', Japanese-French courses served behind Taisho-style doors in the private rooms of Misuzukari, changing four times a year (a second night brings a Japanese menu ending in ochazuke). 2026 menus included Shinshu beef steak with onion sauce and Azumino wasabi, oyaki, a boar risotto croquette and soup curry to finish, with dessert of milk tofu, amazake and grated kōri-mochi; a sommelier pours Suwa sake and Nagano wine. Bloggers loved the variety and tableware, but reviewers in 2025–2026 found it too few dishes for the price, 'plain mountain food', too rich, a soup curry 'just salty', a weaker second night, and post-meal coffee extra.
Onsen y bienestar: la realidad
The inn's own spring, 'Shingen no Kakushiyu', a weakly acidic simple spring classed as a low-temperature spring. The inn's hygiene notice says the shared baths are recirculated, filtered and constantly chlorinated, with a full drain weekly. The open-air baths in Shinzantei and the renovated Tateshina Club rooms are described as free-flowing from the inn's own spring.
Separate men's and women's main baths with tatami floors (the inn says it pioneered this in 2001) and outdoor tubs over the river (14:00–1:00, 5:00–10:00), without a gender swap; the women's side adds a planetarium bedrock bath. Three private open-air baths over the gorge (renovated in 2023, step-free with handrails) are free for 30 minutes once per night, assigned at check-in. The women-only outdoor bath Ten'yo-no-yu, by the inn's source rock, becomes a private bath for 21:00–22:50 — reached by a long stairway, dark at night and, guests note, with no taps or washing area.
No policy found on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the inn. The free private open-air baths and the rooms with their own open-air bath can be used alone.

Check-in 14:00 (call if arriving after 18:00), check-out 11:00. The inn's free shuttle from the east exit of JR Chino Station runs twice a day and must be booked; route buses to the Shinyu Iriguchi stop cost ¥1,300 (2022 fare).
- 02
The inn spreads over three linked wings: only the main building (Seiryūtei and Shinzantei) has a single lift to the lobby, baths and dining rooms — ask for it if anyone in your group has trouble walking.
- 03
No day visitors; the baths are for staying guests only. Children of the opposite sex may enter the main baths up to age 6, and the bedrock bath is women-only and not for children below junior-high age.
- 04
Allergies: only six allergens (egg, milk, shrimp, crab, peanut, buckwheat) can be removed, with a week's notice — wheat cannot, because it is in the soy sauce and miso.
- 05
Children are welcome at 50–80% of the adult rate depending on age and meals; under-3s without meals pay ¥3,300 (tax excluded). No pets, but assistance dogs are welcome with a certificate.
