A plain Shōwa-era onsen inn on Lake Hamana where every room faces the water, dinner is a Yufuin-designed kaiseki with eel or abalone, and cheap weekday bookings are often upgraded — but the baths are recirculated and shared with day visitors, and the building shows its age
Kikusuitei (written 鞠水亭) is a six-storey lakeside inn on Kanzanji Onsen's Bay Street: an east wing and a better-appointed west wing, almost all tatami rooms, every one facing Lake Hamana, with the shared baths on the top floor. It is the budget counterpart to the area's polished KAI Enshu. The menu was devised by Kenichi Shinkae, head of the Yufuin cooking society (of Yufuin's Sanshōrō), built around local vegetables and 'ryūkyū-style' sashimi dressed in dashi soy and citrus, with Lake Hamana eel, abalone or local Mineno beef as optional mains. Japanese guests rate it 4.32 across 847 reviews on Rakuten Travel (dinner 4.55, service 4.53, facilities lowest at 4.11) and 4.6 across 78 on Jalan (dinner and service 4.7, cleanliness 4.2). Four blogs from stays in January 2023, November 2023 and November 2024 — all four were upgraded to a bigger room at no charge — praise the views, the generous, carefully cooked dinners and the lake from the outdoor bath, and one calls it 'a fairly cheap onsen hotel' that is clean and spacious inside. Reviewers in 2026 keep returning to warm, old-school staff, birthday photos and being waved off at the door. The catches are the building and the baths. The water is listed as diluted, heated and recirculated; the baths are open to day visitors until 20:00; and 2026 guests reported a leaking changing-room ceiling (in June and September reviews), a lift breakdown (July), Shōwa-era tiled bathrooms, few hair dryers and, in one fifth-floor room, a crash at 1 a.m. from bath cleaning overhead. Two-meal stays run from about ¥10,000–14,000 per person in the east wing; the official plans list ¥14,300–26,180.

West-wing Japanese special room (12 + 4.5 tatami, bath, two toilets)
The best value for families and groups: a 12-tatami main room plus a 4.5-tatami side room and window-side engawa, two toilets and two washbasins, sleeping up to six, on floors 3–5 (9 rooms). Plans for this wing can include dinner in your room. It is where upgraded guests often land: a January 2023 blogger was moved to Room 523 and a November 2023 blogger to Room 425, and a group of four in June 2026 found the side room and second toilet ideal. In May 2026 one guest booked into a fifth-floor west room was woken at about 1 a.m. by bath-cleaning noise from the sixth-floor baths above, so ask for a lower floor if you're a light sleeper.
West-wing Japanese-Western room (twin beds + 8 tatami) or Room 325
Only two Japanese-Western rooms exist, with a sofa living room, twin beds, an 8-tatami room for extra futons (up to four) and barrier-free access from the bedroom to the toilet and washbasin. A November 2024 blogger was upgraded into one at the price of a 10-tatami room and found it big enough for a whole extended family. Room 325 is the single 'Reiwa modern' room (72.3 m²), furnished in local Tenryū timber with Simmons semi-double beds and a lake-view bath. A July 2026 guest in a twin room loved the wood smell but found the air conditioner above the bed noisy until it was adjusted.

East-wing 10-tatami room (shower only)
The cheapest rooms (the majority, three of them with beds on tatami) have a toilet and an old unit shower but no tub, and the inn's own site says it doesn't recommend the east wing to guests who care about room quality. Recent guests mention a 'retro' bathroom (August 2026), a bathroom too dated to share with a small child (May 2026), and children's voices next door and footsteps overhead (May 2026). Hair dryers are in the baths, not the room (loan dryers at the front desk). On the plus side, many weekday guests in 2023–2026 were upgraded free — but it isn't guaranteed.

La cocina a fondo
Consenso sobre el desayuno
4.2/5A Japanese set packed in a bento box (salted salmon is often praised), plus a self-serve corner of rice, miso soup, curry, bread, croissants and fried potatoes, served in the second-floor dining hall at 7:45 or 8:30 — popular with families, though one August 2026 guest found the rice hard on their second morning
Book the cheapest east-wing plan on a quiet day: all four bloggers and many 2026 reviewers were upgraded at no charge, though it isn't guaranteed. Arrive by about 18:00 — dinner starts between 18:00 and 19:00, and anyone arriving after 20:00 loses dinner without a refund. Free welcome drinks are poured in the lounge from 15:00 to 18:00. Choose your grilled main (eel, abalone or beef) when booking; it can't be changed on the day. A small summer fireworks show is visible from lake-facing rooms but not from the dining hall.
Claves de la cena
4.4/5Served in the second-floor hall Shuntō (tatami with tables and chairs), a private dining room, or your room, depending on the plan. Courses run 7–9 dishes, from the 'Enshū no Megumi' set with ryūkyū-style sashimi to an 8-piece sashimi kaiseki; eel isn't included in the base course, but you can choose it, live 'dancing' abalone or Mineno beef on a ceramic plate as your grilled main, or add whole eel (¥4,400). The wild tiger-fugu menu is suspended after poor catches. Bloggers in 2023–2024 enjoyed abalone, eel served in a dish with the Tokugawa hollyhock crest, Enshū pork shabu-shabu, mackerel rice and hōjicha pudding; one noted the ingredients aren't luxurious but are well cooked. Reviews in 2026 praise portions, hot dishes served hot and a different menu on the second night. Allergies need three days' notice.
Onsen y bienestar: la realidad
Kanzanji Onsen, a chloride spring (一塩化物泉) according to the official bath page; the inn says the source ranks third in Japan for salt content (citing a TV programme). The official facility page and Jalan both list it as diluted with water, heated and recirculated with filtration — not free-flowing. A January 2023 blogger found the indoor bath lukewarm; a 2026 reviewer found the water soft and skin-smoothing.
Two sixth-floor baths, each an indoor bath joined to an outdoor tub facing the lake: 'Hoshi no Seseragi' (星のせせらぎ), floored with Tenryū river stones, and the hinoki-built 碧のやわらぎ. They swap between men and women monthly rather than daily, so a short stay sees only one side. Open from check-in to 1:00 and 5:00–9:30. Day visitors use the baths 12:00–20:00 (¥1,320), and in May 2026 one guest found the outdoor tub taken over by noisy day bathers before dinner; others had the baths to themselves late at night. A May 2026 guest worried the large windows could be seen from outside. The private open-air bath 'Komorebi no Yu' (50 minutes, ¥3,300, booked ahead) reopened after storm-damage repairs, with bookings resumed in February 2026. Bath tax ¥150.
The official bath page says tattoos must be covered with concealing stickers in the shared baths; if they can't be covered, the large baths are refused. It doesn't say whether the paid private bath is an alternative — ask the inn.

It's an old building: the lobby connects to the second floor by escalator or stairs (staff help wheelchair users), only the two Japanese-Western rooms have barrier-free work, and in 2026 guests reported a ceiling leak in the bath changing room, a morning lift breakdown and a lobby that felt hot in July.
- 04
No station pick-up: take the bus bound for Kanzanji Onsen from stop 1 at Hamamatsu Station's north exit to Hamanako Bay Street (about 45–60 minutes, ¥620); a taxi takes about 35 minutes (around ¥4,500). By car it's about 3 minutes from the ETC-only Kanzanji Smart IC on the Tōmei; parking is free.
